I missed out on the previous discounted price from NewEgg (they were out of stock by the time I found out from my price alert) but I was able to pull the trigger today!

Not sure if this has been posted...

I got my order confirmation from NewEgg and it said:

1 x ($699.00) RECEIVER ONKYO TX-NR809 R

First thing I thought of when I saw the 'R' after the model number is, does that indicate it's a REFURBISHED unit?

Anyone? Bueller?
My neighbor got one and I set up last weekend aand it appeared new. Not sure if there was an r on the model when he bordered the weekends before.

Mike.

Something -DOO? Anyone? VooDoo economics. Love that movie!

Ordered one today as well...have the same "R" on the order confirmation. Nothing on the sight that I could find that said either new-in-box or refurbed. Just e-mailed them about this, but probably won't hear back until Monday.

Probably not, mine was absolutely not refurb.

Also, the best way I can describe the sound quality of the Yamaha is "analytical" or "sterile".
My speakers are Front: Legacy Signature II towers, Center: Paradigm cc570v3, Surrounds: PSB Image T4, Sub: Outlaw.

Any input much appreciated!
The Yamaha would be best described as "bright" rather than sterile. The 809 is more well rounded, possibly a bit more towards the warm side. Would be a much better match with Legacy's. Bi-amping will run them nicely. I have a pair of Infinity Renaissance 90's bi-amped on the front R+L. The 809 is not a match for the Citation 7.1's I pulled out of my system, but it is as good as any receiver I have ever heard including the Anthems. I will try the rec as a pre/pro and report back. The 809 surround processing is excellent. The video processing is astonishing at the price. You MUST run Audessey to get the system to work right. (These are only MY opinions, of course)

Same here except I did not email them. I know they would not send me a refurb because they would get it right back or have to knock a bunch of money off of it. I choose to think the R is for retail. Here is to hoping Onkyo sorted out the issues with the other models or I will be living the nightmare too instead of the dream.

Agree on all 3 points

"B" means black face plate, not "B" stock.

Thanks Joe. The letter we're talking about is "R"

Any idea on how much heat difference there would be between the 809 and the older 607? I can give the receiver a little over 2" head clearance in an open style stand (no obstructions on the sides, back or front).
I have had the UFW-1 for a couple of weeks now. I think it totally rocks! Now I can have the 809 on the DLNA and stream music from my phone

How does the 809 compare to the Onkyo HT-RC180 in terms of sound quality? What is/are the major difference(s) btwn the two onkyos?
I answered this is another thread you asked in already.

"Well it's missing lot of the quality in some aspects. Say the new video processor is supposed to be better than the Faroudja. It's missing Audyssey MultEQ XT, which provides better sound. It's missing dual hdmi outputs. Basically many bells and whistles are missing and some slight quality improvement features are missing. I mean what you expect at twice the price. If you don't care about quality or features HT-RC180 is a nice unit.

It also doesn't have a learning remote. Has no phono input either."

Yea, I know, just thought the next question would be about the "B".

Hi,

Thinking of the 809 or the Denon 2312CI. Denon has Airplay built-in

Since Onkyo seems to be updating the firmware frequently (just added Spotify) is it technically possible for them to add airplay support in a future firmware release?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, and I'm glad to hear that the 809 might do well with the Legacys. I actually installed a 608 at my folks house a couple years ago, to go with a very old set of Legacy towers, and it just sounds great. Much better than my Legacy Signature IIs do with my Yamaha. Yes, I know it is a totally different room and acoustics.

Does anybody know if ISF is global or assignable?
How's the heat on everyone's? Mine seems to be great. It's a tight fit on my tv stand, and I check the glass above it periodically. It's warm to the touch, but nothing like people have said. The heat can escape the sides, but there's less than a 1/4" above the receiver.
Keep telling yourself that, it's an onkyo. I wouldn't even trust it being warm at this point. As for ISF it's assignable per input.

Apparently Amazon matched it. I had been looking at getting a 709 and then was just cruising this thread. Looks like I'm getting an 809 now!
Yea you'd have to be a retard to buy a 709 over the 809 when there is a $50 price difference.

I just hope it doesn't end up screwing me 2 yrs later like the 876 ended up doing.

So an electronic device isn't supposed to get warm? C'mon-I know Onkyos have a bad rap, but you sound paranoid. Overreact much?

How's that?

Also, I asked this in the 709 thread since I was thinking about getting the 709, but with the 809 on the way maybe I should ask here: I read on a review site that the receiver draws 38W while in Standby mode if the HDMI Through Mode is active. With the recent firmware updates, is this still the case? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

Wow, glad I checked this when I got home. I just cancelled my egg order and got it from Big River and saved sales tax. Used the $3.99 Prime 1 day shipping too so whoot. GOOD NEWS for me.

Not to the extent my 876 got hot. Why do you think they had so many dead HDMI boards. The cooling fans don't even kick in until it was insanely hot. You better live at the south or north poles if you don't want your unit to melt. I'm speaking of the 876 years models. It's widely known they get super hot. Go read the thread. From day one people were like what the hell, and putting their own fans on the units to keep cool. Which I did too and yet it still failed 2 yrs later, so much for that $1700 receiver.

I hear these units are much cooler, I'll know in one more day. But paranoid, I think not. Their heat track record speaks for itself.

Bah - this would have been my preferred route too. Oh well - I've ordered plenty of stuff off Newegg and never had problems, so I'm sure I'll be all set.
