I have both the older 805 and the new 809. The 805 gets really hot, but the 809 does not. The difference in heat is remarkable.

I had one HDMI port go bad on the 809, but so far everything else seems fine.

Don't forget that most people who post are those who have a problem. We usually do not hear from those who are happy.

My 809 just runs barely warm and it's in an enclosed cabinet I just leave the door open for now till I find a fan I want to use.

What he said times 2. The only problem I have with my 809 is how long it takes to go from power off passthrough to power on and listening in surround. It sounds better than my previous Pio Elite unit. When I called tech support about the power on delay I got hold of a tech within 5 minutes. He did not solve the problem but he was there rather quick and said they would warranty the unit. I elected not to warranty the unit for now because it is a minor issue and everything else works fine thus far. Very happy with the unit. This AVR has to be the value leader in its class and as mentioned after a product has been introduced you will hear few posts about how happy folks are. Just the I am having this problem kind of stuff. I am satisfied with my 809.

has anyone been able to successfully listen to dts-hd ma codec on the receiver from an htpc?

the htpc i currently have has an i3-530 and an asus P7H55-M PRO motherboard which should be able to pass that codec through. however, when i look at the front of the receiver, it says pc and underneath, it just says dts

thanks

I had a Onkyo service guy call me from his cell to my cellphone for over an hour. He gave great advice, and knew his stuff and home cinema kit in general. Very impressed, he helped a lot. I have had some response on their Facebook page, and none on the Web form.

This amp is feature rich, and very daunting for a novice to set up. When you consider the variety of kit people are connecting to it, and the many ways we all want to use it with different priorities, I am not surprised there are a lot of questions.

But hopefully people who have come out the other side of setup, can share their experiences, because this amp sounds awesome with movies.

This amp does not run hot.

I was really loyal to Pioneer and the Pioneer MCACC did a nice job in my listening room too. I bought a VSX-1015 and it never gave a problem. But, I was tempted to the Onkyo by reports of much more power (regardless of ratings), plus the Audyssey seemed more sophisticated than the MCACC. The video capabilities weren't as important to me, but it was nice to read how state-of-the-art they are in a receiver this inexpensive.

I ride a Harley. If you go to any of the Harley sites, you will be quickly convinced that every one of them ever made is defective, but it is the nature of internet forums. You hear all the bad, and just a little about the good. The 808s did have a common problem around the remote control and selector button logic.

I don't believe in 3rd party warranties.. they get your money and then you need to convince them and beg them to honor your claim after the fact. No thanks, they're a high profit rip-off.
  • The amp does not run hot. I am keeping NET turned on, but haven't tried it with HDMI Through turned on. I may as an experiment.
  • I love the Audyssey over MCACC (admittedly and older version). The microphone has a threaded base to fit nicely onto a photo tripod.
  • The GUI is excellent, even for the wide variety of functionality.
  • The Internet capability is excellent.
  • The firmware upgrade capability is very good, but I will stand by my rule to use a USB flashdrive and not the internet download option. (just too much chance for a broken or timed out connection for my liking. YMMV
  • The sound is excellent, open, airy, warm but crisps in the cymbals and snare drums. Plenty of power for my Klipsch, but they are admittedly efficient speakers.
  • Did I mention it has a phono input so you don't need a outboard pre-amp

Hi guys:

both avrs are comparable in terms of price and amp power. I heard more problems with 809 than yamaha. I want to buy one by next week, let me know your experience with 809 and problems you are facing. I read lots of QC issues with 809. Thanks for your feedback

First off, thanks to everyone posting to this thread. Always a big help when deciding on a purchase and then setting up the gear.

Got my 809 Thursday. Immediately connected it to the internet and started the update and...worked fine. Watched the display for a few minutes then left. Came back an hour later and process was complete.

Bought this to replace an 806(which I really didn't need to do but I wanted the HDMI 1.4, dual-HDMI outs and network connectivity). Runs cooler than the 806. Spent some time tweaking the "custom" video setting on the DirecTv DVR input. First I set brightness and contrast on the Blu-ray input(using oppo 93 and setup disc) then put those settings into the DVR input. Too bright and contrasty so dialed them down a bit. I wanted to try using the 809 upscaler for a while rather than the one on my Mitsu HC-5000 projector. I wish DirecTv had a dedicated test pattern channel. Leaving the Oppo input in direct mode since it also has a Qdeo video processor(same as Onkyo?).

I like the NET functionality. Using DLNA, I can start up the receiver and start random play of my mp3 collection without needing to turn on the projector. Not a fancy interface but gets the job done. Not sure about playlist support. Minimal documentation of DLNA. I can also get Sirius streaming using my account that works on their webpage but not their mobile app. But audio quality sure takes a hit compared to directly connecting my Sirius plug&play receiver.

So far, so good. Just threw Rocket to Russia on the turntable and cranked it up. Sounds like the 806 to me. I did notice the center channel sounded more isolated when watching Fringe than I remember from the 806. Could be Audyssey or could be the sound processing mode I was using. All the sound modes still confuse me - I never know which one should be best given any particular input. What, use my own judgement?

Could you post these QC issues so I can check them out cause I haven't had a single issue as of yet.
Thanks

If you list out what the Audio input OSD says for each of your inputs, I'll tell you which one I go for.

My Oremote App now can switch off Listening Mdes, so I only have ~ 6 or 7 to chose from. Helps greatly. (I COULD still get to them via the Music/Movie etc buttons, but they are mostly false settings or a variation on a theme).

Not to derail the thred, I'm having a hard time trying to pick between the pioneer vsx-1121 and the 809. I have a onkyo 605 that has really worked great, no issues to report, now time for something new. Any thoughts on comparing the two units?

I'm not sure any of us have much exposure to both. I am coming from an older VSX 1015 which was good and I liked MCACC, but this Onkyo with the Audyssey, all the video capability, and power is so much better.

Onkyo is about $100 more money, but I think the output power of the Onkyo is going to be much better, if that is a priority for you. It was for me.
When asked my 3312 vs 809 question, reviewer and pro "JoeRod" had this to say: "Good question. The Onkyo seems like a TANK compared to the Denon. A 15 pound difference! Plus THX is on the Onkyo. And what Video Processing is Denon using? With the 809 you are getting damn good processing from the HQV Vida and Marvell Qdeo chips. I am sure there might be a couple things that favor the Denon but nothing major like those. Oh and I almost forgot. The Remote on the 809 is light years ahead of the 3312s. Not even close!!!"

I'll recommend you get a small LED TV (smaller than 26") and use it as OSD. You'll need to connect the LED TV in the HDMI Main and the Projector in HDMI Sub, just like I did. I love the result. I'm very pleased with my 809 performance.

No it's all still here SteveL1949. A labor of love from the 70s forward searching for the best eclectic mix - changed many, many times - but never solid state. I just had a love for tube sound and vinyl. When CDs came out - what a disappointment. Yes, deep black quiet background but the nuances and air were stripped forever. And now folks think MP3 is adequate...

So, to answer your question or musing I cannot give good advice.

There is a Yahoo group golden_tube that is Golden Tube Audio (GTA) - based but there a a lot of general tube aficionados there as well.

Tonight I emailed 6th Ave Electonics requesting a RA# for my 809 that (unless you have living in a cave for the past two weeks or so) is incompatible with any dispaly that can't speak 1080p. No Set-up menu, no NET feature display, the Input/output Assign menu is a joke for those that have single-res 1080i or 720p or lower monitors, and so on, ad nauseum. The 809 is a 1080p box and one will struggle as I have to make it make nice with anything other than auto-res and/or 1080p-capable displays.

But castaño has posted some pics that remind me of me. I had to put a small and cheap LCD next to my Mits 65" CRT RPTV (1080i-only) just to read the fricking menus. That NET-music menu that he pictures for example is hard-coded to 1080p so my 65 displays mush. I've learned through many trials here that the 809 has no long-term interest in or about the native res of your display. It will revert to 1080p as soon as is possible. There is no "global" lock on output res. So, in order to keep this freaking thing with all of its other nice features I may have to stoop to a separate OSD "companion" display - just so I can navigate 1080p menus and funtions while my Mits 65 RPTV struggles to lock to a non-ATSC res format.

An A/V receiver is designed to power many different speakers at once. A stereo amp is designed to power only two channels and can afford to do it with more nuances at the same price.
As I invested in a good stereo amp for my fronts because I love music, I want to take advantage of it for my home theater since I can't afford to have a dedicated room.

Thus, in music configuration I use:
DVD player -> DACMagic (DA converter) -> stereo amp -> fronts (the 809 is off and bypassed)
in movie configuration I use:
DVD player -> 809 -> stereo amp -> fronts (the 809 powers center and surround speakers)

Benefits: best of both worlds (best sound for my fronts in 5.1 sound)
Disadvantages: I have two amps running -> more electricity and one more device to turn on/off (one can also argue that there is a loss of quality because the sound must travel from 809 to amp but it's clearly negligible)
Canvas: your stereo amp must have a 'fixed gain' input that you connect to the 809 pre-out so the volume is managed entirely via the 809 in movie configuration.

I've been extremely happy about this setup.

Hope it helps,
Gam.

I believe there is global lock for hdmi resolution, you probably have tried this onkio menu-input assign-monitor out-Resolution-here u can change to native Res of your tv.make sure to press enter on remote, hopefully you will see menu on ur tv, all of this can be seen on the receivers front display.another place to change Res.if using custom video settings or any other settings besides direct mode, onkio menu-source setup-picture adjust-picture mode-custom scroll down to resolution and change. For ISF-day and night press and hold display button until hidden settings appear once again scroll to res and change for each one, this hidden menu will only show for this session. This are the 3 that can be adjusted, now this what i did that leads me to believe monitor out-resolution is global, first picture adjustment press and hold display buttom on remote hidden menu appears for adjusting brightness, contrast, hue this are the only 3 i adjusted using set up dvd,(tv was done first) before this i adjusted video custom settings.
Brightnes +3
Contrast +8
Hue +1
And reset all 3 "0" which is what they were before.
Now i adjusted the monitor out.
Brightnes +5
Contrast +10
Hue +10
And went back and adjusted video custom settings.
Brightness -1
Contrast -1
hue 0
As you can see it did affect custom settings so leads to believe monitor out settings are global.
Now monitor out res(have BD player 720P and video custom settings res 720p) changed to 1080P my tv shows 1080P and all picture modes show 1080p except for direct of course.if i change to 1080i all picture modes show 1080i even thou video custom settings res is set to 720p.
changed monitor out to source now my tv is showing 720p, and now i changed video custom settings 1080p and tv shows 1080p and only 3 picture modes show 1080p(custom,ISF-day-night) and the remaining 4 display 720p which BD is set to out put. I do believe monitor out is global, this are just my findings.

I am getting ready to get this recevier and have a couple quick question. I had the TX-NR709 last year and it broke on me, so I am getting this one now.

I remember doing the firmware updates from instructions I found in a forum...should i look for any special instructions on this forum, or does the instructions that come w/ the receiver pretty much walk you through it?

Also, I was thinking of getting the wireless doggle thingy that's for the -809 for streaming Sirius radio to my zone 2. Does anyone have any experiience w/ the wireless piece? Is it working properly? Was just curious since this is new if there's any issues w/ it. Also, you CAN stream to zone 2, correct?

Will I have a problem using a warranty with Onkyo if I purchase this from Newegg? Newegg has free shipping and a great price, I really want the Denon AVR-3312ci and if not for this damn economy I'd get it. I need to save some dollars.

I truly appreciate you trying to help but I think you lost me. I know of no hidden menus. I always press Enter. I do know that when Source is selected as a Resolution you must then get back into the menu and navigate down to Source Setup where you must select Custom in order to be permitted to set just that one source to a res other than 1080p. However, Custom Picture Mode screws with the incoming video signal's grey-scale as in white and black levels. That is more than rude - it sucks. Sorry.

Now, try anything you can think of to change NET to 720p so you can view the menu of network media providers. Betcha can't do that.

"press and hold display button until hidden settings appear once again scroll to res and change for each one, this hidden menu will only show for this session." Huh? Where does that appear in the manual?? Where is the damn list of mystery, secret handshake multi-button or press and hold commands that Onk imbedded?

amazon had it for 679.99 a couple of days ago. good for those in cali that pay tax on newegg.

so, does anyone else have problems getting dts-hd ma through an htpc that uses igp graphics through the i3 or i5 series?

Got mine on Amazon for $627 but that was just blind luck. And I have prime so that behemoth was shipped overnight for 3.99!
Is there a n00b setup guide to this thing anywhere? Besides reading this 53-page thread?
you pick it up through amazon or a third party retailer?
It was from Amazon. A third party was selected by default, but I selected Amazon under "more buying choices". It dropped the price to $627 and overnight on prime is 3.99.It said it would take a month for Amazon to deliver, then I got a notice that it was being sent "sooner than expected", then shipped, all within a few hours. These things happen on Amazon sometimes. Always worth a look.

Got my 809 for a couple of days now. Great device. However, there is one issue:

Does anyone using this together with a media player like a WDTV? When playing mkv files I experience the following video playback issue:

Depending on the scenes there is a stutter/slow motion issue about every 3-5 minutes. It's not the 24p playback stutter. More like a slow motion where the scene runs at 80% of the normal speed for 2-3 seconds. Really strange and annoying. Not recognizable in every scene... but it's there sometimes.

This doesn't happen when I connect the WDTV directly to the TV. So it's definitely an issue with the 809 AVR. HDMI is set to 'DIRECT'. I thought the Onkyo won't do anything with the signal then. Unfortunately it does

Any ideas?
