Arc flashes can be dangerous in your breaker box, but not with something like your AVR. As long as you're not using it for a pillow and have your head on top of it, I wouldn't worry about a failure resulting in fire.

I beg to differ. If you have an arc flash there is the possibility that the surrounding material inside of the receiver could catch fire. If it arced it is possible that there is a short in there that will not trip anything but will continue to generate heat until a fire is started.

Anything is THEORETICALLY possible, but either case is very highly unlikely. The surrounding material would not be that flammable. If in the highly unlikely case a short that would not be cleared by internal protection or a power protection device or your breaker panel, the continuing short by its' nature would probably reduce the resistance to the point that it would be cleared.

UL testing addresses both of these kind of things.

The advice to not use it as a pillow, is good, however

Here is the scenario. I have two components. One component is plugged into VCR(DVR) HDMI. The other component is plugged into VCR(DVR) analog (Red and white inputs)
Can I switch components between HDMI and the analog inputs in the main zone for VCR(DVR)? Am I limited to one input for VCR(DVR)?

I very good source ( ;-) ) told me that if the HDMI source is turned off when you select VCR, it will use the Analogue source if present.

Are you feeding it a composite video signal too (yellow).

You don't say what these two Sources are, but I would have separated them onto different Source Inputs, so you can deal with the video mode processing and default audio modes individually.

So I have to give some feedback...added two HEIGHT speakers last night, just for testing. Watched THOR (ok movie, great sound) and WOW, even my wife said WOW the sound is so even across the front.

NOW I want to add more...

However I am slightly confused...can I add 2 more WIDE speakers - which would put the total at 9? I only have 2 l/r surrounds at the moment (although thinking about adding a single rear)

I was thinking the 809 could only support 7.1 and that my limit is any combo of 7 speakers (well guess I could add another sub)

Or is my thinking wrong...and I could actually add all 11 speakers ?

Thanks in advance.

Only 7 Channels, so you will be limited. The 1009 has an extra 2 channels.

You can certainly wire up your 11 speakers, and you can then use the remote to select which 7 are used.

For info, Audyssey say the most effective are Wide, then High & then Rear.

Dang...so now I gotta ask, is there any other way to power at least 2 more fronts, i.e. WIDES ? Some kind of external amp?

Or for example I have an older receiver that is just sitting around...could I use 2 of those channels somehow...I will get to the manual, but most likely I will just scratch my head :-)

Good afternoon everyone. Just picked up a TX NR809 and got it all hooked up on Friday. I'm liking it a lot so far but am having some issues with audio cutting out on certain tv channels that are Dolby 2.0. I've tried several different audio output listening modes both surround, 2.0, mono and all cut out. This seems to happen for a fraction of a second a few times a minute or so. However, it appears I don't have this issue with 5.1 channels. I tried running my HDMI direct into my tv and no priblems. I've only scratched the surface of the setting on the 809 so I'm not sure if I'm missing something.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help and I've really enjoyed surfing AVS.

The sound skipping is a common problem. It's not the AVR. I switch my ATT DVR to stereo output for day to day TV as the sound never cuts in this mode. For sports and movies I'll switch to surround to get Dolby D and just put up with the occasional sound skipping commercial.

My 809 should be here any day. Besides doing a firmware update, what should I check out?

Hey guys, I am trying to setup my ARC with my Panasonic GT30 and the 809 so I can watch some Amazon instant video and I am having trouble. I went into the 809 setup and set ARC to auto. I select TV/CD input play the Amazon content and no sound...what am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Get a mic stand or tripod and run the Audyssey setup and enjoy.

Hi cazual, go into Panasonic Tv Viera Link menu and enable Viera Link and set Tv Speaker to Theater. After the settings turn tv off and on (may require doing the same with receiver).

I am wondering if someone can help me. I recently purchased a TX-NR809, and I am wondering if there is a way to watch TV, or any video source while listening to music. For example, can I listen to my ipod or Internet radio while watching TV without audio from the TV source, but audio from the music source. I am connected via HDMI with everything going thrum the receiver. Thanks.

Yes, more details in this thread, but if you feed a cd player into CD, for example, then deselect any video Source association for CD Source Input, then you can select your Sat Source (to get picture), then back to Cd Source to get Audio (which retains picture)..

For Net Sources, if you are not using Z2/3, feed one of their pre-outs back into CD, and you can then set up Z2/3 to play Net, and then select your video source(to get picture in Z1), and then select CD Source Input again to hear the music (retaining picture).

This is all a bit tricky on remote, but easy enough with ORemote.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I have AT&T uverse as well. Is this an AT&T issue? Is this problem present with other receivers? I never noticed it with an old Bose system or my old onkyo at a different house with different AT&T equipment...

A FYI.

Anxiously awaiting my Onkyo to be delivered next week.

I came across a 21 minute video on You Tube where the guy walks us through the 809's features, connects, internals, menus, etc. For someone who is kind of new to the newest generation of electronics, I thought this video was great and has me feeling more confident about tackling the receiver part of my new home theater, although it is from overseas, so I don't know if there are differences (he did mention 170 or 180 watts per channel).

Hopefully, this will help those new to this receiver.

Perhaps, one of the vets here could look it over and give an opinion. The tour of the unit with lid off was impressive. It seems to be well constructed.

Here's the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS7Gqku3bc8 link.

JChin, thanks that did the trick.

Can you give me a better explanation please? Is this done in the setup menu?

Hi bkrieger, connect iPod via RCA to TV/CD port.

- select your video input source
- wait until the source video is playing
- on the remote, press "Receiver" button and then "TV/CD"
wl1, you are right. I noticed that you can assign the inputs to different sources. I wanted to use the optical 1 game input, but I am using it for HDMI as well. I can assign the optical1 input to a different source. I suppose if I am using all the HDMI inputs in the future (which I do not think will happen), there is the option to switch off the HDMI off to play the other component that is connected to the optical input.

Hello. I'm new to this forum and am hoping someone can help. We purchased an 809 last month and finally got around to hooking it up. Everything works and sounds great except for blu-rays. We have a Samsung BD-D5500 3d Blu-ray and when we had the Onkyo in the THX Cinema mode, it sounded great, however, there was no audio for the actor's dialogue. All other sounds but no actor's dialogue. The only way we can hear the dialogue is if we put it in the All Channel Stereo listening mode--no other listening mode works. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't know if the problem is with the Blu-ray player or the Onkyo or just some setting we're missing. Thank you.

I am trying to use the net source for music, and switch back to the cbl/tv source without the audio changing to the tv source. I want to watch tv while listening to internet music, without audio from tv. I have an HDMI hookup. When I hit the reciever button, and the source button, the audio changes to that source along with video. I would appreciate an explanation on how to do this. Thanks

Hi MAMACLEOD, how many speakers are connect? Double check the center channel speaker connections (remove and reinstall at center speaker and receiver - note: power down receiver and unplug power cord as a precaution).

Did you do your Audyssey set up?

Don't know if this works but read wl1 posted for Net. Connect one end of RCA cables to Zone 2 Pre-Outs and connect the other end of RCA cables to TV/CD. Enable Zone 2 and select Net to play out of Zone 2.

- select your video input source
- wait until the source video is playing
- on the remote, press "Receiver" button and then "TV/CD"

Your original post said Red/White - not Optical.

Both Optical and Coaxial Digital are assignable, but red/White Analogue are not.

None that I can see.

Highs and Wide need Audyssey DSX processing - so Amp must be configured to 9.1 for this to be processed by it - and this is not an option for a 7.1 Amp.
