Download the 809 Owner's manual and start reading.

I have a question on the Android APP for the 809. I haven't downloaded the APP yet, but was just reading an aritcle online. I have a wired connection from my router to the 809. I used to use the wireless adapter for the 809, but when I was streaming movies (throught my blu ray player) it was choppy, so while I was going w/ a wired connection to the Blu Ray Player, I went ahead and ran a wire to the Onkyo 809 as well.

An article I was just reading said a wireless router was needed. Do I assume that is so the wireless router can pick up signal from phone, then the signal can be passed wired to the Onkyo? OR Do I NEED the wireless adapter on the Onkyo to use the Android App?

Thanks for any input.

Correct. It's so the phone can pick up the AVR's signal from the wireless router regardless of how the router is connected to the AVR.

As the other poster said, yes, you need one - but for the portable device only. The wifi AP will bridge your two networks if it is set up correctly.

Generally, any Onkyo app's wireless requirement will not be very taxing, so a slightly weak connection may work fine. If you get lots of dropouts, the app's responsiveness may suffer.

I posted here a couple months ago about how I cannot adjust the volume with the remote when watching 3D material, I have to get my lazy a$$ off the couch and go the AVR and adjust the volume old school. I don't watch much 3D content, so haven't come across it until this weekend again.

Is it still the case? Is there any firmware upgrade to correct this issue or is it just how it is w/ the 809 receiver?

I havent had that issue, I play 3D games and watch 3D sports and movies. I am not using the stock remote though, I am using a Harmony.

Hello everyone. Let me start off by saying that I am somewhat new to this hobby and I am looking for a new receiver to replace my Onkyo TX SR701. I am eyeballing this new 809 and I would like to get up to date on the new audio formats in the blueray movies. I do not currently have a blueray player and my new Sony 3D LED TV will be here tomorrow. My current receiver does not have any HDMI ports on it and I think that may be holding me back for some of the new audio formats. THis setup is NOT in a dedicated HT room. It is in a family room and 75% of the time we are just watching cable TV.

I am currently running 5.1 for surround through the receivers amp. I do not plan on adding external amps to my setup at this time as it will be pointless. Id rather spend my money on better speakers.

The biggest upgrade I see now in HT is obviously 1080P and 3D (which I will have with the new TV) and the new DTS and Dolby audio formats (which I do not have in my current setup).

My question for you guys is should I buy this receiver knowing it can decode those formats or can I get away with getting a blueray player that decodes those formats and send that signal through optical to my current AVR.

I was never a fan of sending video to an audio receiver but with the new advances in this stuff I guess its worth it in the end.

I just dont want to waste my money on a new receiver if my current one will be fine. From some of the info I have read online, most say that the average person wont even notice the audio difference from Dolby digital to True HD. Same goes for DTS and the new Master Audio format. Again, I am new to this and I am constantly reading so go easy.

Hi! New poster here but regular stalker on these forums..
I've had my 809 since last fall and in the beginning everything was great from all my sources. However, I've recently noticed severe lip sync problems while playing video files from both my Boxee Box and a Dune D1 connected via HDMI. I haven't really changed any settings on my Onkyo, its set to Through on all video settings with Lip Sync on.

The strange thing is that the audio delay differs from video to video. If I adjust the AV Sync on the Onkyo on one sort of file, it might still be completely off on another. From what I can tell it might be related to the video refresh rate..? The receiver is connected to a 55" Samsung D8000.

So does any of you clever guys have any suggestions? I've tried resetting, gone through every kind of video mode on the receiver, turned Lip Sync on, turned it off again etc, and I'm going crazy.. I can't watch anything anymore as the lacking sync is so annoying, and I think I'm even starting to see things as out of sync when they really aren't
Help is appreciated!

Yes, if you really want to enjoy the lossless formats an upgrade is definately in order, the 809 would be a great upgrade.

The 809 has plenty of power so upgrading speakers would be money better spent rather than getting an amp

To get the lossless TrueHD or DTSMA audio you need a receiver that can decode the bitream(via HDMI) from the player or pass the PCM signal if you let the player do the decoding, even with a new BD player outputting via optical you will only get the legacy DD and DTS formats not the true lossless audio from your 701

I was never a fan of sending video to an audio receiver but with the new advances in this stuff I guess its worth it in the end.

Having the lossless audio to go along with your HD 3D display would be icing on the cake, your old receiver will certainly get you by with the legacy tracks on BD discs. An upgrade to lossless audio is definately noticeable IMHO, but you can certainly get along with you 701 if you dont't think it's worth it.

An 809 is a great AVR and would be a great upgrade for you, lots of bang for the buck and would go with your setup well.

Based on the bolded comments, I would suggest not upgrading the AVR. The higher bitrate DD/DTS 5.1 on BDs over optical/digital coax is comparable to the HD codecs with the vast majority likely being unable to tell the difference between the two. The best your cable TV can do is DD 5.1 so again, pass 3D channels to the TV with optical audio to the current AVR. For 3D BDs you can simply get an HDMI 1.4 BDP and pass HDMI to the TV with optical to the AVR.

I am using a Harmony remote too, but that doesn't matter. I tried using the Onkyo remote as well, neither will control the volume when playing 3D movies.

I haven't done a firmware upgrade in a while, maybe I'll do that will help.

I remember reading about a soft reboot of the Onkyo AVR, how do I do that again? Is that just unplugging from the wall and plugging back in? And this doesn't lose any of my settings.

Then a hard reboot is completely resetting back to factory and I'll need to re-run Audyssey, Correct?

I can never get the app to work on my android. I have a wireless router and usb dongle on receiver. Any suggestions. It worked on the 808.

That is the common answer I have been reading. Many say that most people wont notice the difference in sound. Im on the fence with this upgrade. My entire HT equipment is about 10 years old and I am ready to upgrade. The TV will be here in a few days and now I want to be ready for it with a new BD player and possible a newer Onkyo AVR. I have read about 75 pages of this thread and the majority of them are about HDMI issues with this receiver. That alone is got me wondering if I should hold off and look into a better then average BD player which I need. I think if I can find a 709 or 809 at a good price then I may buy it. I will continue reading post here in hopes that there are more positives then negatives

Hi all

Well i got my new replacement onkyo on Friday PM and all was well for 2 days and then the HDMI started playing up again ie slow start up 3 mins plus then loosing the content for a few seconds and comming back on.

I am speaking with the retailer today but as this is the second unit faulty with HDMI i am thinking of swapping off the 809 and going 1009 or pioneer.

Any other folk having issues with the hdmi start up?

Cheers

Downloaded app last night to phone. Scanned my wifi, selected the 809 on my phone, and wallah, was using the app in minutes. SWEET. Looking Fwd to using this app for zone 2 volume this summer to crank up the volume when beach boys tunes come on poolside!!!!

So, I just bought an 809(will be here today)...Got up this morning and see the specs are out on the new entry level 2012 Onkyos....Would I be correct in that even the top end nr-616 would be a downgrade to the 809? As far as comparable features, it looks as if the 809 is a higher quality amp. Minus the mhl feature the 809 trumps the 2012 models I am seeing so far...input JDsmoothie? =)
^^
Correct. The announcement was regarding the lower level models with the 616 being at the top of that lineup, replacing the 609 from last year. The 809 is more in Onkyo's mid level category and will be replaced by the 818.

Hi all!,
First post here!
I have been reading a lot and finally decided to pull the trigger on the 809.
I could have probably gotten away with the 709, don’t have much going on…
Samsung DLP
PS3 for the Blurays
DirectTV HD receiver
Sonos Connect
5.1 Speakercraft
PLUS future zone 2
It’ll be a MAJOR upgrade to my 10 yr old Yamaha AVR.
I’ll hopefully have this all controlled with a Redeye I just picked up!
I know this post is pointless, lol I’m just excited to join the 809 family

I would bet that the IR emitter for your 3D glasses is somehow interfering with the IR remote signal for volume adjustment. As a test, try covering/blocking the 3D emitter on your TV and see if the remote starts to work. If that does it, you may need to move something around to avoid the interference.

I have a few questions regarding the 809....

1.In my entertainment center where the 809 would be its open on the left and front but will only have maybe a inch open on top would this be good enough? I heard Onkyo's have had over heating issues in the "past' so I'm a little concerned.

2. Does MultEQ®XT set/adjust the sub woofer?

1. Should be plenty, this generation of Onkyo AVR's run much cooler, internal fans may kick on more often.

2. Yes, be sure to disable any "auto on" feature before starting Audyssey calibration, also disable any crossover on the sub or set to highest setting. Use the gain dial on the sub to set the sub to 75dB when prompted.

You should be just fine with that clearance and yes it does the sub. The clearance is not ideal but that's how I've had mine and it never gets more than warm to the touch.

I just got an 809 today and was wondering is there supposed to be a book style manual in the box or have they just gone to discs now?
Just disk and quick start type manual.
