I was trying to find a post regarding the "dialog" setting within a broadcast can be changed. But came across this.

I can't recall exactly when my 809 comes up with Dialog, when it first decodes, but it may be relevant.

I experience the "drowned" out commentary as well on certain channels when watching sports. I Haven't figured it out yet. The only thing that helped a little was to set dynamic volume to high. The dialouge in movies is typically fine though.

The last superbowl was bad, I would only guess it was a double dsp processing (source and hardware) matrixing caused the karaoke effect ( very weak commentary or dialogue) with overly loud crowd effects. 5 channel stereo or full mono worked good , stereo and DTS Surround Sensation or T-D (Theater-Dimensional) all sounded great.. Thats why there are so many choices...

quick question-got my 809 set up yesterday...Does the unit display any light on the power button to signify if it is on or off? My 875 power button would turn red when off..I have the blue light around the volume knob, but was wondering if there is any other lights minus whats in the display? thanks.

No. Fewer lights the better for me.

You can also turn off the volume light, and then dim the display down, with consecutive presses of the Dimmer button.

Thanks for the reply...Another quick question..can u explain a little about the networking on the 809...I saw some videos on you tube and I really LOVE the idea of doing firmware updates via the internet then having to install manually...

Does the 809 need the Onkyo ufw-1 to function wirelessly? Or can I use any wireless usb adapter? I have a samsung wireless adapter for a bluray player I bought last year...would it work? I guess I could just try it but wanted to ask in advance...Also, I read that the usb wireless adaptersw have to be plugged into the front usb connector and not the back to work correctly..any confirmation to this?

Firmware updates are done very infrequently, and most people's goal is to achieve success. On any device, updating firmware is risky - attempting to do this over wifi and the Internet is not recommended.

This amp has Net features, and the manual recommends Wired Ethernet to ensure no dropouts.

There have been other wifi adaptors recommended by others on here, which are much cheaper. I think these are a last resort. Power line Adaptor methods would prove more successful if wired is difficult.

Sorry to be so negative - but wired will get the best results for Net functions. With firmware best done over USB drive.

The hqv is there to either upconvert standard def sources to 1080p output. for instance if you are using an old dvd player you can use the chip in the onkyo to upconvert the signal and enhance detail to 1080p. For the most of us, we will be using the passthrough setting as our blu ray players, stb, etc. will already be decoding via a high def format so set the onkyo to passthrough the high def signal would be my choice.

I recently picked up the 809. My 5.1 speakers are the Boston Accoustics MCS 160. Are the Energy Take Classic 5.1 5.1CH Premium Home Theater System a better choice or should I keep what I have?

Looks like I'm going to join the 809 club. I currently have a 803 (with a 7.1 Klipsch Reference 82's w/surround) and it doesn't handle hdmi 1.4. I'm also getting a Panny 65gt30 delivered in the morning, bb has them on sale (the main reason for the 809 upgrade). I see that the 809 up converts all signals to 1080p, does it do a really good job of this or is SD still going to look bad? I also was wondering what this business of up converting to 4k is. Is that the next resolution that is planned to be available? I can't wait to watch me some HD with my new tv and receiver (I have Terminator 4 in mind).

Posting here as well.......

Am I doing the calibration incorrectly??......

I just bought a new sub and ran audessey. I placed the supplied mic on my tripod and in main listening position. I turned off all ambient noise from surroundings.

I began the test, but sub was not on. On the display, I noticed that the spl level was hovering around 40db.

I am concerned that this is wrong. Should be close to zero in a perfect situation, correct?

What do I do? Is there something wrong with my 809
avr?

You have to account for background noise ... the only way it would be 0db is if you were in an anachoic chamber.

How well the AVR upscales depends on whether the source or TV can upscale any better. And unless you plan on going to a display > 100", 4K shouldn't even be a consideration.

THX Loudness Plus...I was looking through my receivers settings and saw this so I turned it off. I am getting much better sounding dialog out of my center.

I don't remember turning it on, maybe Audyssey turned it on? Anyway if anyone has it on, try turning it off. Might help others.

Hmm. That's kind of limited for performance. The power of the 809 could easily destroy speakers of that quality/price-range.

Buy in steps so you can get something higher quality. That's what I did last time and it worked out well. I bought my FL, FR, and Center in one transaction. Then a couple months or so later I bought the RL, RR, and sub. Personally I went with Klipsch reference series stuff, but you really should go listen to some speakers before you make a decision everyone has different tastes.

You could go with a Polk Monitor series setup (60, 30, center), the sub choice is on you though as I don't recommend a psw

No, but you might want to consider trading in the 809 for a 609 so you can increase your speaker budget. Speaker budget should be 2x-3x that of the AVR budget, otherwise you're just going overkill on the AVR.

Exactly. The speakers are the single most important component in a setup and should take up the lion's share of the budget.

You'd be better off getting a budget AVR and better speakers than springing for a mid-level AVR and getting cheap-o speakers.

Polk monitors are a pretty solid recommendation at the absolute entry level of what is out there that is decent.

+1 for Polk, I went with the Tsi series for my fronts and center, along with a comparable in-ceiling pair of Polks for the rears. I think they sound great with my 809. The monitor series speakers from them are really only cosmetically different from the Tsi, and would make a good choice for you being on a budget. Watch Techbargains for great deals from Newegg... or Polk also has great deals on direct refurbs on Ebay.
