I watch blurays on my ps3 which is connected via hdmi & optical to my 809. I usually use my cinema speakers to watch films but when I don't want to use them and would rather use my tv speakers, for some reason no sound comes out of them when the receiver is on standby with hdmi thru set to auto.

It's strange because when I play games on the ps3 with the receiver on standby I get sound through my tv speakers no problem but not with films...any ideas guys????

What is the Optical cable for ? If you connect this to your AVR you might not get HD Audio formats when watching films with your AVR (depends how you have set up the PS3). I would start be removing the Optical cable.

What Audio format is showing on the PS3 display bar, when you get no audio during a film? And what shows when you do get Audio, when gaming?

This answer could go many ways, so I'll leave it there for now.

Hi everyone,

I have just upgraded recently from TX-NR807 to TX-NR809 and so far, I am loving it. However, I am looking to see how to increase picture quality on my TV. All devices are connected via HDMI and connected to the internet via Ethernet (SlingLink Turbo 4-port - if anyone is interested).

1. How can I be absolutely sure that it's my receiver handling up-conversion to 1080p rather than my other devices (Oppo BDP-83, Roku XD|S, Apple TV)? My TV is a Panasonic TH-50PZ800U. I know that I can calibrate sources separately via ISF, but I want to at least set up up-conversion from Roku to 1080p.

2. Audio question: I have run Audyssey on my speakers with settings recommended by Audyssey. However, I have to crank the volume up to absolute 60% to hear decent sounds. Is it better to run through Audyssey first and then boost my volumes manually later?

3. Onkyo app on iPad: While most of the times, my Onkyo app recognizes my receiver, many times it doesn't. What's the trick?

Finally, planning to upgrade speakers to Klipsch RF7-ii. Any advice?

I am happy with the receiver and look forward to your responses.

Andy

1. See my post from the last couple of days - that should get you started. Using Display button will show you incoming and outgoing signals.
2. Which settings "recommended by Audyssey"? 60%? Do you mean 60dB? I am not familiar with the 807, but real listening levels are 50dB to 82dB - this would be normal. If you don't like the "starting point", you could preset the volume from Power On to 50dB, to save ramping up excessively. I am not sure what you refer to with "boost my volumes manually later" - are you thinking of changing the intelliVolume settings?
3. Easy one - get oRemote - and once connected turn off upnp. The new version has a 2011+ model connection too - both very reliable

I was using the optical cable for HD sound which worked. I have now removed it and have HD sound & picture through the HDMI cable.
But I'm still not getting any sound through my tv speakers when watching films in HDMI Through mode (standby). I only get sound through my tv speakers when playing games.

When watching a film with no audio the ps3 display bar shows the following: DTS-HD MA Multi-Channel 48 kHz 3.5Mbps AVC 22.1 Mbps

When playing a game I can't seem to figure out how to get the display bar displayed for me to see!! Any ideas??

Thanks for help

Optical is not capable of passing the HD audio which is why you need the HDMI cable. Try connecting the PS3 HDMI cable directly to your TV. The TV may not be able to receive bitstreamed HD audio, and if that's the case, you'll want reset the PS3 to stereo in order to pass it to the TV. Games are usually in PCM.

Regardless of whether you use the "absolute" or "relative" volume scales, you'll generally have to raise the volume at least to 60-70% of maximum as a logarithmic volume scale is used (unlike perhaps an older stereo you might have used previously). The speaker volume settings after running Audyssey are the levels the film mixer intended you to listen at so try using these levels for 2-3 weeks to see if you can adjust to them (as opposed to more boomy levels many folks are used to hearing on older stereos). If you still want speakers or the sub louder after that period, then do so using the AVR (never the knob on the sub itself).

Just came from my local Fry's Electronics an hour ago. NR809 is on clearance just under $500. If you near a Fry's you should check today. Guess they're discontinued to make room for the new models.

All the other Onkyo receivers were heaving discounted too including the NR709, NR609 and RC360. Lowest price I've ever on all these models.

I just ordered Onkyo TX-NR809 THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black) online. I have older HDMI cables, do I need to buy the new HDMI V.1.4 cables?

Thanks

I know a few years back that certain onkyo models had issues with the overheating and the video card going bad. Is this still an issue or has this been resolved? Also has anyone compared 809 to a harman kardon avr3600 from a sound quality comparison?

If I may ask, what price did you get and where?

No you do not need to buy any 1.4 HDMI cables. HDMI is HDMI unless it is rated for high speed but other than that you just need to use a quality cable. They label them with versions to get people to spend more money. 3D, 4K, and Deep Color video requires substantial data throughput, so you'll want to use a High Speed HDMI cable but again high speed doesn't require a 1.4 spec cable. It does however require a 1.4 spec port.

IMHO, 809 should compare more to 3312...

So now which the best??? is the question.. I am looking for an answer too..

Considering the nr 809 to replace an old Marantz receiver. Is the Onkyo considered to have a bright sound? Read some on the 809 and some said it was and others not. Also, the other brand for consideration was something in the Denon line comparable to the 809 that many said had a warmer sound. Thanks for any help.

The PC input (15 pin D-SUB RGB Analog) takes your standard VGA from your laptop/pc? Or is it of the analog component (Y/Pb/Pr) kind?
It would be great if that accepts VGA/SVGA..

Thinking of picking up one of these. Coming from a 605. Had good luck with it. I know some people here hate it and some love it. For the price I dont see anything that comes close to this. The 2 features im really looking at is the 2 hdmi and 3D. with the 2 hdmi out, how can I send video on hdmi and audio out to my PC speakers which have a 3.5 jack input?

Quick question for anyone who knows:

1. Which listening mode is preferrable for matrixing 5.1 to 7.1 (since most tracks are native 5.1 still) - THX Surround EX or THX Select 2 Cinema? Will I still get lossless audio with either mode? I am running HDMI for everything with good cables and my PS3 or BTD220 blu-ray player are both capable of all lossless formats.

Thanks!

I'm almost positive I'll be buying an 809. The question is, with the new models on the way in, when do I strike? I want to be sure to buy from an authorized dealer at a great price.

Also, considering I live near a large city (Denver), I have surprisingly few local options available for buying one. The only authorized dealer around me is Best Buy where the price for this AVR is still laughably high. I think it's full MSRP.

From other authorized online dealers, I'm commonly finding the unit for nearly 60% of that now. I know Accessories4Less is also an option for slightly less than that even. Unfortunately, I'm thousands of miles away from the nearest Fry's (Major sale this week).

So can I expect to get an even better deal from one of the authorized dealers if I wait a little longer? Do I get the current clearout "deal" that most dealers are offering? Or do I take my chances on a refurb from A4L even though it's only a little cheaper now?

Thoughts? Comments?

It is "Best" (for them if you) "Buy"...

I can feel your pain. Man what a deal Fry's has. Darn. I too am too far away to take advantage.
A4L is just $100 less, so I don't see any substantial difference.
I am waiting to see if something pops-up online or locally like what Fry's did..
If you are in rush, check if one of the forum friends that are near Frys' help you.

I'm not in a huge rush, though I am excited to upgrade. My 6 yr-old Pioneer Elite doesn't have HD audio and only has 720P HDMI, not 1080P. I just don't want to wait any longer than I have to, and I don't want to wait too long and have to buy from a non-authorized dealer.

Any suggestions on how to sell 809 so I can get new model? Less than a year used.

Is it worth the upgrade? Really interested in xt32

Just received my 809 today from Amazon. Is there suppose to be a detailed Instruction manual in the box? There was only the Quick start guide, Using Internet radio and remote codes and product registration info. Also I was wondering if anyone has upgraded there AC cable? I see the included one is only two prongs. I have a better one but is is 3 pronged. Also do the NR series models have gold plated terminals?

Thanks
