I will set speakers to 80Hz and give it a shot..

It's now performing about right.
I did not test carefully after running the Audyssey this time.
I had run it once last week and it was weak no matter what you do.
Today it seems much much better. This is w/o changing any levels that what Audyssey has set. May be my sub was asleep and woke up when I drove it through 85db of pink noise..

Thank you all for your help..

I too have been trying to increase my bass output and found that raising the L/R crossovers to 80hz (Center was already there after running Audyssey) made a dramatic difference.

I have increased all to 120Hz now. I will keep playing with it.
One important change I made was, in last week I was playing with sub settings and I had set Selec2 Ultra2 subwoofer and the BGC on. That I disabled yesterday. I am not sure if that made big difference.

For most people and situations, frequencies below 80hz are non directional. By increasing your surrounds to 120hz, you will reduce your surround field for low frequencies. Listen out for this, as you may prefer them at 80hz. I am not too sure which surrounds you have, and their capabilities in this area, hence it may be better to let your sub handle them as you are trying.

Sounds like (no pun intended) that you are getting there.

Yes. I am getting there. Good tip on surrounds.. Thanks.

BTW, I was curios to know the thumbs you had attcahed last time around showing the setup? How did you get those? what application is that?

Are you referring to ORemote, an IPad App. It must be a while since I last gave this App a glowing report, but the developer is constantly updating it. If you have an iDevice, and an Onkyo AVR, it's a must have.

Latest beta version has some great new features, which reveals all the Audio/Video options available, in a very easy to use GUI. For those, like yourself, still playing, it helps to demystify the options, and see the interactions. Certainly more fun than reading the manual......

That's nice. Unfortunately I do not have anything "i" than an iMac.
Android is my next best option...

Thanks for the info though..

I have a question about the component output .. Just hooked up a 809 to a older Mitsubishi diamond 65 inch tv for my neighbor, the problem is the tv has no hdmi only component and I can't get a signal to the tv . I went through the settings to monitor and tried everything . Any help would be appreciated thanks

The receiver will start flashing "hdmi" and then display "no signal" and it will just hang there with no signal and no output (sound or video). If I quickly switch the receiver off and back on the Blu Ray picks right back up where it left off and plays as if there was no problem whatsoever. But having to cycle the power on the receiver to get a Blu Ray to play is a pretty obnoxious extra step. If it helps at all, it's the old school "fat" PS3.

Also, I can't seem to get my Xbox to display video properly when hooked up to the receiver. Again, I have the original Xbox and use a VGA cable, and when connected to the Onkyo PC vga input, I don't get the image displayed correctly or at all. I "fixed" this problem by just setting it up as I did with my old 9100THX....running the VGA cable directly to the TV, and the optical cable to the Onkyo for sound. But I was hoping with the VGA input on the 809 I could limit the number of cables going to my TV down to just the one hdmi output from the 809. Again....any ideas? Any similar experiences?

Oh, also, if it matters my TV is a Panasonic TCP50g10 plasma.

Thank you in advance for any input anyone can offer!

Any help? Anyone else have this problem?

I would hazard a guess most people do not listen at home, at reference. If you do, then adjusting trim levels will not make much difference.

But for those who go on to use Dynamic EQ too, adjusting trim levels will make that technology worse too.

I am curious if your calibrator leaves Audyssey MultEQ XT turned On or Off?

I am judging all aspects of values given after each run as well as subjective sound. As for trim levels they make all the difference. At your listening position you want each speaker to be putting out the same DB's. If lets say the trim of the front right is too high you will have poor imaging and a right heavy soundstage among other things. As for my calibrator he, and every pro reviewer I know will do trial and error along with measurement gear to get the best sound in a particular room. Sometimes that may mean implementing room corrction. Others not. It can also be subjecive, as with using correction the room may read flatter but sounds too dead etc. Each room is different and is responsible for over 50% of your sound. Some rooms will misbehave badly and without extensive room treatment will be of good use.

Not sure about flac files you refer to, but I chucked some on a stick, and navigated very quickly to them, no issue. These were 16bit 44.1khz.

I think transfer rate of memory stick might come into play. Worth a try.

Thanks for the tips on jump drives, guys!

looks like newegg is out of stock. says the 809 has been deactivated. just a heads up!

Fry's is now blowing out iPod docks (universal port version) for $34.99. Just saw them in the Woodland Hills, CA location.

I need to do a controlled isolation and find out what the issue exactly is.
However if someone has already found a solution, please share. This is not critical, I may find a workaround.
I want to use both HDMI outputs of the receiver. Before I distribute those, I wanted to test and here's what I did.
1. My PJ has 2 HDMI inputs
2. I connected both HDMI outs as below
HDMI Main -> HDMI 1 on PJ
HDMI Sub -> HDMI 2 on PJ
3. Input source is PS3.
4. Monitor out is set to "Both"

What I noticed is, before making everything on, if the PJ was on HDMI 1, I get the out put from HDMI Main to HDMI 1 w/o any issues.
When I switch to HDMI 2 on the PJ, I get the output from HDMI Sub to HDMI 2 on PJ.
Now if I try to go back to HDMI 1 on PJ, I do not get any output (and I see that the sound also does not work in this case).
No matter what I do I never get the output on HDMI 1 unless I power cycle the whole setup (may be it's one of the component needs power cycle, but I need to find that out).

I am confused as to what the issue is. It's the same PJ, same resolution so there should not be resolution conflict....

Any ideas??

I cannot seem to get sounds to my patio speakers. They are connected to Front Wide L/R posts. I would like to send music out their via apple TV or the internet, but at this point any sound would do. Under setup, it shows Zone 2 power.

Make sure you don't have the biamp setting set to on in the menu.

does it have to be an analog connection only?

Yes you cant use a digital connection, it has to be analog with exception to the net setting as far as i know.

See attached.

Do you get the Z2 indicator on the VFD display?

Analogue, Tuner, Net (DLNA, vTuner etc), are are available, so you should be able to test this. Obviously Z1 cannot use different Net settings at the same time.

A lot of equipment with HDMI/Digital connection have analogue outputs, you will just need to double up the connections.

Z1 will use the connections in the order HDMI / Digital / Analogue so it shouldn't be a problem.

I finally got one last week from New Egg ($487.00)and it arrived 5/23. I have been watching New Egg open box returns for about 2 months. Looks brand new, still all the original packing and tape on the unit, and so far sounds great!

x2, I've been playing with it for a couple of days now and it is a pretty awesome machine...and the price the egg was selling these for, unbelievable!

Mine also came in a box that looked like it was never opened, neither did the little bags and whatnots that had the remote and accessories and literature. I am fairly confident in saying that my box that I received was never in fact opened. I suspect it was more of a move by newegg to clear out the last of their 809 stock in preparation for the 818's.

I am still learning all the different features this avr has, but so far it does not disappoint one bit. I loved my old denon 1611 and it has been regulated to bedroom duty now, and this onk smokes it in just about every way, and the best part was that it only cost me around $170 more then what I paid for the 1611 some 14-15 or so months ago....not bad for a $170 upgrade.

Bumping in hopes of some feedback.

I've heard the PS3 slim has faster load times than the old "fat". Could that be a possible solution for the HDMI timeout "no signal" issue?

And I am going to have to figure out the VGA situation with my Xbox since I just got a new TV that has no VGA input. Spose I could get a new xbox with hdmi and a new slim PS3, but damn that's a lot of money for something I hope has a workaround.
Let us know your Source input settings.

For the HD source like a BR, I would expect you to be using
Input/Output>resolution = Source

And Source to be Direct (no video processing in the Avr)

If you are trying to use the video processor with the Fat PS3 then this may be adding to the comms issue during Source material changes when the BR is booting.

I have a FAT PS3, so no need to get a slim one just for this issue.
I am using the "direct" setting...or was I should say. Unfortunately I can't do much tinkering at this time since everything is completely disconnected and my entertainment unit is disassembled and stuffed in the garage along with my avr since my house is being tiled right now.

I'm crossing my fingers that when I hook everything back up (the addition of tile necessitating a new audyssey calibration anyway) perhaps a master reset will fix this issue, since I didn't perform one after updating the firmware.

But any other ideas or suggestions in the meantime would be helpful. I'm wondering if my PS3 disk reader is going south.....it seems to take an inordinate amount of time these days to fire up a blu ray.

wl1 and rworne,
I suppose there is no resolution to the random skipping issue in z2 or 3. Has the apple app or Onkyo android app being updated to allow independent zone random skippping?
If you can skip to to next track on the album that is currently playing, surely it would not be too difficult to skip to the next random track by pressing the zone button and skip if it keeps the the original zone 1 setting even when you select a different input for the main zone. It makes me regret getting an Onkyo receiver.
