My friend's unit has broken twice. It was a refurb. Since he's bought it, it's spent more time broken than repaired. This is the HT-RC360 though. For mine though, not been broken once. I think it really depends to be honest. I've heard a lot of Onkyo problems but most of the time I think it's user error. My boy drives his receiver at 75%+ volume all the time lol.

It's a constant overlay. I understand that it pops up saying it's muted, but when I'm still watching the TV or playing a videogame, it's kind of annoying... It's really annoying actually lol.

If this unit doesn't drop any more by Saturday, I think I'll get it. yolo afterall.

There is also a lot of complaint about Onkyo's customer service.

I just bought one on Amazon. If you look at the reviews there, about 80% of the reviews give it 4 or 5 stars, so it is a bit of a stretch to say that there is a "good chance your unit will have some kind of failure." I'd say that the most likely scenario is that any new unit will work fine. It usually helps to look at the big picture and not to focus on the negatives. If anything, negatives tend to be exaggerated in reviews because those frustrated with problems or poor service are usually most likely to post a review.

EDIT: Success!! Original purchase price that I paid was $606 but now I got it for $426. Should see the $180 credit on my statement in 2 - 3 days.

Can you provide the phone number?

have a 5 speaker setup.. no woofer yet... main speakers are jbl 180's.... currently i have a pioneer 1021 that i'm not very happy with... i'm not sure if the speakers are under or overpowered but they don't run loudly as well as i want them to... any insight would help... it seems this receiver has much more power... and according to speaker specs they can handle much more than my pioneer outputs... any help or recommendations would be appreciated...thanks!!! only other receiver im currently debating between is the sony 1030...!

I believe I selected option 3 for return/refund. After providing the order number I indicated I wanted to keep the unit but wanted a refund due to the price drop. She put me on hold for a minute than issued a refund. I received the email confirmations later last night.

If you read some of the negatives, they are due to the unit not featuring a specific feature or function but not a review of how it performs. I always take a consumer review with a grain of salt.

I just called Amazon and they are making me return the (2nd) receiver I got for a friend so they are able to cancel and credit the full order and then I will have to order another one at the new lower price. I told the customer service rep that does not make any sense and that it would be more logical and economical for them to just credit me the difference between the old and new price, but they indicated that their system does not provide for that option past the initial 7 days since the order. This does not make any bussines sense since they are sending me a prepaid shipping label, that will cost them to ship it back. In this instance, the return is only possible because they extended the return window to forty days, if I recall correctly from the conversation, because of the xtmas season...

I had placed a previous first order back in early October and that one will not qualify for the return. Unfortunately, that early order was for me and the second one for a friend, so he is the lucky one...

The CS Rep was very cordial and upon my request consulted with his management with the stated result....

I am having kind of mixing feeling about this since traditional brick and mortar retailers would be able to just credit the difference if the order falls withing their price guarantee period...

So at the end, I guess Amazon is ending with a not so satisfied customer.

I went ahead and bit the bullet today on this receiver on Amazon today. Delivering tomorrow. I'm replacing an Onkyo TX-NR 876. I hope that it sounds similar. I know the 876 has a little more power and weighs about 12 pounds more. Will find out tomorrow. $431 is an excellent price, though. cool.gif

That was exactly what I was afraid was going to happen to me. Kind of a shame that there isn't consistency between different customer services reps...

I told the rep about the experience that I read in this Forum and asked him to consult his management, which he supposedly did. I was surprised too that this was different than what other Forum members had experienced....Go figure!!!

My parents are looking to upgrade their current Samsung HT-TZ512 HTIB setup. I recommended this receiver due to all of the features and its current bang for the buck price. They want to just swap the samsung out with the 809. I was looking at the specs for the speakers on the HT-TZ512 and here are the specs. Will this work for them until I can convince them to upgrade speakers?

Front/Rear
3 Ω
140Hz~20KHz
86dB/W/M
170W
340W

Center
3 Ω
140Hz~20KHz
86dB/W/M
180W
360W

Subwoofer
3 Ω
45Hz~160Hz
86dB/W/M
340W
680W

Can someone help me decide if the 809 will power these 3 ohm speakers without overheating...etc?

IMO, sorry, but adding another receiver, no matter how good, is not going to significantly improve that setup. That setup is specifically designed to work as a system, and I wouldn't try changing it up. If they want better sound, they need to start all over and get some serious speakers and decent receiver.

In reading the manual for these speakers (http://products.bose.com/pdf/customer_service/owners/og_901.pdf) it appears that you need to use the preamp outputs to connect to the equalizer. It seems that the Bose equalizer will power the speakers, not the Onkyo. Hope this helps.

Yes the equalizer needs to be connected to the pre-amp outputs of the receiver, but it will not power the Bose 901's. You will need to add an amplifier after the equalizer to power the Bose 901's. Back in the days when receivers had connections for a tape recorder you could get the signal from the receiver, loop it through the equalizer, and use the "Tape Monitor" setting on the receiver to get it correctly configured. Now that tape recorders are all but gone that feature has all but disappeared. Below is a link of the amplifiers that Bose shows as being recommended for their 901's.

Well it did not take me long to convince them lol..... I was torn between the Energy Take Classics or the Jamo S426 without the sub. Instead, I purchased the Polk PSW505 sub with the Jamo S426 speakers which I got for 115.00! They have a relatively small den so these speakers and sub with the 809 should be good. Also purchased a 40% off square trade coupon and bought the extended warranty for the receiver. I just couldn't turn down this much receiver at this price point. On a side note, the Onkyo 818 I purchased should be here today! smile.gif What do you guys think about this setup?

Still considering purchasing this. It looks like price went up $5 for some reason. Just thinking about all the hassle if I have to connect this and then disconnect everything to return or send in for repair. Also hearing about their customer service quality isn't reassuring either. A lot of people were waiting weeks and some even months.

For the features you get it seems like very good deal. I would like to use this with my Sharp 844u TV.

If in doubt spend the extra for a square trade warranty. You can purchase a 40% coupon from ebay

Thanks. I may do that.

Can you connect your Satellite receiver, PS3 and TV through the receiver but still use Satellite receiver or PS3 with the TV without powering up the receiver?

The receiver has HDMI pass thru...I think you can set one of the inputs at a time for pass thru...I have the satellite receiver passed thru and works fine.

Same here.

Price went up to 445 but still considering it. What irks me is the relatively bad track record of the unit itself and Onkyos customer service (or lack thereof)

But looking at other brands, to get the same amount of features you are spending almost double.

If it is double you can obtain some peace of mind by buying an extended warranty.....they have it on the Onkyo site...someone else mentioned square trade as well....the price on the receiver is hard to beat....

Hi,

A few months ago, before I had an iPad (or iPod Touch), I read some glowing reviews here about the app called Oremote. Now that I have an iPad (and an iPod Touch), I decided to buy this app, but the reviews at Apple's App Store suggest that the most recent version does not work well at all (and it sounds difficult to revert to an older working version).

So, if there are still any Oremote users out there, can you please tell me whether Oremote is still a good app, or are there better ones out there? Also, what aspects of Oremote are now broken and will they be fixed soon? Is this a matter of the latest iOS breaking something in Oremote?

Thanks,

Gregg

Finally got the 809 hooked up and sold my old 876 for $300. I have to say, the 809 really does sound good! Sounds better than the 876, which I was worried about it being a little higher up in the chain. Already had the latest firmware update installed, also. Can't wait to put it through a movie marathon and see how the heat is compared to the hotbox the 876 was. cool.gif

Pretty sure its double. I think the Denon equivalent is the 3313CI, at about 1K.

Not sure about Yamaha or Pioneer though.
The 809 is last year's model so its Denon equivalent is last year's 3312CI which can be had for roughly a couple hundred more then the current 809 sale price, although Amazon does have the 3312CI on sale at times for $550.

Thanks, keep getting the 2 mixed up.

Im mostly interested in zoning capabilities, kinda like getting multi-room audio without any extra work or equipment. Im amazed at how complex the combinations are (i.e. no separate sources to zones via HDMI, one can be HDMI while the other is streaming only, etc). Seems to be more of a pain than its worth, go figure! I know one of the bigger drawbacks of the Onkyo zoning is that you cant send a digital signal over Zone 2, is that correct?

Do the Denon models have that issue?
Although this year's new 3313CI dropped the capability of also passing PCM 2.0 over optical/digital coax to Zones 2/3, the previous year's Denon 331XCI (and higher) models do have that feature and are basically the only brand/models that do. However, the new 3313CI is able to pass an independent HDMI source to Zone 2 to either a TV or 2nd AVR (ie. no audio processing done rather straight pass through).

At 26 lbs I'm not sure the Denon is the closest comparison. The 38xx series would be closer if they still made them.
