I guess technically speaking, no.
I did the "no no" and put the mic on top of a pillow in my seating position. I dont think Audyssey did a terrible job because of it, but I havent gotten a tripod to compare the results of the right way vs the wrong way.
My issue is lack of bass, but the more I read the Audyssey thread the more I see people with the same "issue" (its even a question in the FAQ - "where did my bass go") along with some tips to remedy it (things like DTS reference levels being 10db lower than Dolby formats, so you need to bump up the DTS level 10db to counteract that). I actually have a replacement '809 sitting here right now and will try that one to see if it works any differently.
On one hand I just wanted to borrow/rent a tripod to use for the Audyssey mic, but on the other hand Id like to have it available whenever I need it if I change equipment or locations.
