With the ST600, even though it can "see" the other Windows shares and play files from them, it does not appear as a Windows share itself.

Is this a shortcoming of the ST600, or is there something I can do to have it show up?

It doesn't have a samba server. The WDTV does. Some media players do and some don't. The ST600 doesn't.

I hear there was an update recently. Can anyone tell me what it added and if Hulu Plus, Amazon VOD and Pandora are available?

Pandora and Hulu Plus are there, as is Vudu, Netflix and others. There is a major upgrade coming on September 9 th which will supposedly fix Plex as well as a lot of other issues. I don't know about Amazon's service.

OK, thanks for that explanation, Philip. But couldn't LG easily add a Samba server to the firmware? Wouldn't that be useful?

I would think if a wireless keyboard and/or mouse worked on the LG, I would think either remote would also
Well, I just received my Rii Mini remote from TomTop. It works with the ST600 web browser, but not with the rest of the LG user interface. I still have to use the LG remote control for text entry, for example searching on Youtube.

Does the Lenovo work with the LG apps, or only with the web browser?

I have Netflix Canada, but I don't have Vudu, Hulu Plus, Pandora. I have firmware .173F, and the ST600 is setup with Canada as the location - is that why I don't see the same LG Apps as you, Philip?

Well I am also in Canada. When I first got the st600 I had Pandora but not Hulu Plus. There was also no app store for Canada and it is still not active. Pandora doesn't work from Canada with the st600. There is another screen that you can get to which lists more apps. I can't recall the key combination to get to it, but that one allowed you to add stuff to the premium pane. Something may be different now after the last firmware update that gave us a non-working Plex. Anyway, it depends where you say you are as to which premium apps you can use.

The Lenovo multimedia keyboard only works in the browser for me.

I watched a show last night from the st600. I really like the quality of the picture which is why I keep hoping they will fix Plex and a few other annoying issues in their September 9 major upgrade. For now, I don't know what to make of the st600 They need to get it right as it is having a negative impact on their Smart TV lineup.

Is there any wireless keyboard/mouse available that could make text entry (search, login, etc.) less of a chore with the ST600? @pmcd has the lenovo and I have the Rii, but they only work with the web browser, not with the Premium apps or Medialink.

LG provides a sort of "magic wand" with their smart tvs that senses its position in space, but that's apparently tiresome to use, too.

So, is there anything on the market that is better than LG's remote control for the ST600?

Has anyone used the iOS/Android remote?

Has the new firmware improved the digital audio output, or is it still limited to DD/DD+/DTS?

I recently bought a LG 3D Cinema Smart TV 5600/5700... the operations is similar to the LG ST600... it uses plex to stream from my two-bay NAS. I just recently upgraded to the new firmware... the good thing is it see and playback all my media files (minus Blu-Ray ISOs)... but it only plays back stereo digital audio and Dolby Digital... most of my MKVs uses DTS and DTS-MA and I get no sound from them... plus it seems it cannot effectively playback some corrupted files that plays fine on my stand alone media players & PC...

If you have a look over at the Plex forums you'll see what they have planned for September. It's pretty major. For now the ST600 is very limited when using Plex/MediaLink.

I thought that the date September 9 refered to new firmware from LG, not something from a third party. Did I misunderstand?

Actually, I'd rather do any local streaming via SMB to a device with native processing. (Didn't the latest firmware enable SMB/CIFS?) I won't use DLNA or server-side transcoding. No interest at all.

Since I already use a Dune and HTPC, my real interest in the LG was for Vudu. DD+ should be good enough for that. (Local streaming was just a bonus.)

I was pleased to discover iMediaShare on the Android Market while I was looking for other stuff.

It runs fine on my Archos 5 with Android 1.6.

It found my LG ST600 (as "ST DMR1286") right away, and pushes content directly to it (no need to use the LG remote control except to turn it on).

It includes a lot of content from the Web (I have tried Engadget and Deutche Welle, but there's lots more).

Here are links to iMediaShare on the Android Market and on their website.

Maybe you know of other ways to get new content onto your TV via the ST600?

I was wondering if this would be a way of getting Internet TV into the bedroom.

A second ST600 ($100) connected wirelessly to the Internet and my home wireless LAN, and to a HDMI input on a "cheap" ($150?) LCD monitor.

With the LG apps, the LG browser, my home media servers and MediaLink, as well as Android apps like iMediaShare, that's a lot of content for little outlay.

The alternative, of course would be a "cheap" ($300?) LCD TV and an OTA antenna, but that's more outlay, and I don't think there's many digital TV signals in my area.

What do you think?

No, you got it right, @lsarver. The LG firmware upgrade foreseen for September 9th is supposed to add and fix a lot of things, including Plex/Medialink, which is supplied by Plex Inc.

The Plex forum is a good place to keep up to date on developments with LG Smart TVs in general and the Upgrader in particular. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much information available direct from LG.

I have been thinking of getting a new LED based TV, and LG was my top choice before I experienced the ST600. Does your LG TV play back most supported files through Plex? Are you wired or wireless? What about the UI, is it snappy? I really like the idea of a TV with Plex or whatever built in. I would hope that the experience would be as good as that of a media player. Did your TV come with the magic remote?

September is the last chance for me and the ST600 to get Plex working. For the price of a TV I would hope they get it perfect and no networking hassles.

Any thoughts on the LG TV would be great. In my case I don't want a 3D TV so I could get a larger TV for the same price. The problem at the moment is that LG TV's are more expensive than a very nice Sony.

Are you able to stream all your local files on this or do you need to transcode some?

Most. The specs list all the supported codecs and containers. At the moment it depends if you use DLNA, samba, plex, usb. This will all be sorted out in September hopefully.

The ST600 offers me a firmware upgrade to ,177F, but it fails repeatedly when I try to upgrade over Ethernet (wired).

Has anybody found a download site for .177F so I can try from USB?

Apparently this update adds the LG App Store for those countries that didn't have it (I am in Canada).

This site:
http://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/prod...odelCode=ST600
only shows the July update.

Hmm ... I just upgraded it and it did its thing. As you noted there is only the app store new and the taskbar. The app store has little of interest and it is not obvious how to add apps to the taskbar. There is now a 4th pane which then places the sharing pane last and that is not optimal.

It now seems to not play my mp4 files which it used to. September 9 is probably the real test for the ST600.

Thanks, Philip. Mine eventually updated. I can't say it was worth the wait.

The worst thing is they let you choose good stuff on the PC interface, like Fandango and Revision3, but it's not compatible with the ST600.

The app store was never that important. It has a rather underwhelming selection. But the taskbar would be nice if it could be customized. I don't know why my mp4 files no longer play after the upgrade. On the other hand the remote works better in the browser. The cursor seems more responsive.

September 9 or so is really the final deadline. It either gets fixed or goes to my media player closet.

to add things to the bar, you have to navigate to the + and then navigate to your app and select the "edit" then bring it UP to the bar along the top.

I am rather annoyed that the new panel they added knocked the media library (Media Link) to another page. The Web Browser should be off to the side.. or it should be configurable.

There is a lot of files this damn thing wont play for me, even through Media Link.. where is the trans-coding?!

The UI was very responsive and snappy. My HDTV is hard wired to the network via ethernet and overall streaming was good with no studdering for huge MKV files (25GB+) - but also the reason why it wasn't studdering was because no HD Audio being decoded/transcoded. It was suppose to be able to stream and watch videos from the web but unfortunately it shared the same issues as the ST600 by not having flash 10.1 or higher in the middleware. It played back most supported files minus ISOs - but mostly my MKVs and m2ts had no Audio... I bought my LG 3D HDTV 47inch from SAMS club for $800 and in my honest opinion - I thought it had better 3D picture than the $2000 Sharp Aquas that used active shutter glasses... So if most of your files are mp4, m4v, AVI, Divxx, you should be good - also if your MKVs have no HD Audio you should be good too...

Thank you for the feedback. This sounds very promising. I am currently looking at a model 5600, which has passive 3D, the magic wand and Media Link. I have never used HD audio so hopefully all will be ok. No iso's either.

$800 sounds like a great price.

Yes.

Bad.

Medialink is still completely broken.

It actually seems worse than before. Nothing plays using Plex. Things work with samba and DLNA but that wasn't the main appeal of the ST600. Very disappointing. The media player world has always been a bit unreliable but this seems to have hit a new low, or close to one. Perhaps LG will refund buyers, but I somehow doubt it. The player does not work. They should stop selling it.
