Panasonic 3D Glasses

Thread Starter
I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere - a quick search did not find much discussing this. I am wondering about performance and comfort differences in Panasonic's 3D glasses from last year to this year. I know the basic design differences, but have a few questions:
1- most important, is there a difference in how well it produces the 3D?
2- what do most prefer: the larger lens with open side, or closed side with smaller lens?
3- are there any differences in comfort or how well they stay on/in place?

Sorry to bump so quickly, but I'm trying to get these today before my TV gets delivered...

The newer glasses come in 3 sizes, and are far more comfortable plus rechargeable. No contest IMO. Performance wise, the newer model MAY have a little better range but the difference is small. The closed side reduces reflections and is also a big help.

Awesome. Thanks. I figured I can return them, so I opened the boxes to compare. Last year's are super uncomfortable. The new ones are far superior comfort-wise. I don't like that the lens is smaller, but it will still cover the whole screen so it's probably no big deal. I'm not too worried about light or reflections on the side because most of my viewing is in the dark, but there are occasionally times where I dong cut all the lights and cutting peripheral light through the side will be nice with the new ones. Unless somebody chimes in with any thoughts that say otherwise, the new ones are the way to go.

What is the model number for the new glasses?
I hate both versions of the glasses - the old ones were horrible and the new ones are just not ideal... so much so that I hate watching anything on my vt25 and would prefer to watch on my theater setup with the cheap $60 DLP glasses that actually fit like sunglasses and cover my field of vision.

Anyone want to buy a vt25 lol!

The new glasses just do not cover my field of vision - if I try and sit back into my couch (recliner) I have to angle my face forward so that the glasses cover the screen - very uncomfortable on the neck!

I prefer the new ones in terms of comfort. I have the Mediums, which fit my head, and more importantly, my kid's heads, just about right. The old glasses (1 pair came with my set) work better for me when I want to where my glasses while watching.

Amazon sells both 1st gen and 2nd gen. Pricing on the 2nd gen there runs close to $200. You can actually get the "Avatar" box set that comes with 2 pairs of the medium 2nd gen glasses, then sell the Avatar 3D Blu-Ray on Ebay and end up paying much much less for the glasses.

I thought that Panny was going to lower their prices significantly with the new generation of glasses?

The new 3rd generation glasses should be released soon. They are suppose to be less expensive and some have indicated better than the past generations.

cool, that's what I thought this thread was about...I got confused and thought the 2nd gen glasses were the new cheaper ones...but the 2nd gen's were the ones released late last year...the new ones are supposed to come out this month and be much cheaper

are they currently available for purchase?
Best I know, they will be released in week one or two of august unless another delay surfaces.
J&R is taking preorders for $69.99 each pair in medium or large or $249.99 for two plus a copy of Avatar 3D.
anyone see these for sale yet?
I read this article that says they are supposed to be available in sept. Not sure why they got bumped 2 months.

Correction: I went to best buy today and they had the new glasses in stock. They are 200 for 2 pairs (no Avatar). I think the package with Avatar will be 250 but that was just what I heard. They are extremely light and comfortable. I wear glasses and these feel much better over my glasses than last year's glasses. The only disappointment was they didn't come with a case.

Did best buy have all 3 sizes?
Hmm, searching for the part (s/m/l) by number or name doesn't show anything on BB.com. (I always thought that the website listed complete inventory for stores)? Barring that, can you fill us in on which location you picked it up from?

Best,

No, they only carry medium that I know of. The medium is big though so you might want to try them out. I thought for sure I would need a large but the medium was extremely comfortable. I watched about half of Avatar last night and it was much better with the new glasses. I actually could enjoy the movie without constantly thinking I wish I didn't have to wear these glasses. I wear glasses so I've never had an easy time with 3D glasses until I got these. They are by the most comfortable 3D glasses I've used.

Best,

Yea I couldn't find it online either. I saw on another forum where somebody said best buy had started getting them so I just went by the store. I don't think best buy will carry anything but medium. The model number is Ty-ew3d3mu on mine. I got them from the Best Buy in Little Rock, AR. I was going to call but I just went by because I had 10% rewards coupon. So I ended up getting them for under 200 for the set. They are sweet! You only have to charge them for 30 mins for 25 hours of use.

Thanks for the extra info! FYI, I went into a SoCal Best Buy today (Santa Clarita) and the Magnolia rep said that this particular region won't be getting the glasses for another three weeks. He also looked onto his inventory system and verified; there were no other stores in the region that had them either.

I can't pretend to guess how far this region extends (I should have asked), but I'm going to call around a bit and see what I can find. If I can come up with anything, I'll post an update. If anyone else can locate them for immediate online ordering, or for SoCal area pickup, please let me know.

Take care,

RobbW

Quick further update...After working through five or so people at Panasonic direct, they claim that the medium sized glasses will be released on 8/15 with the large ones following in "late August/early September". This was based on internal info dated 8/9 to them. They also claimed to have "52" on hand in the medium size, but the rep didn't know if this was at Panasonic for their online store or the sum total of what has been released to merchants thus far.

Yea the best buy near me was clueless about them. I asked Sunday when they would get the new panasonic glasses and she said they hadn't heard anything about new glasses. Wednesday I went and they were on the shelf. I will probably order some online since I could get 3 pairs for about the same price.

This just in...the medium sized glasses have just (as of today!) been made available in wide release at most BestBuy locations. You can search for them using the SKU: 3207163 or the model TY-EW3D3M. Here's the rub, they are only sold at $199 but come two pair to a box. No single pair offerings at Best Buy at this time.

I'll add a review at the end of the week, as I'm busy with the 100 hour slide deck calibration for my new Viera 50" GT30.

However, I'm dying to know how these will have compared with my previous (phenomenal) Crystal Eyes 4 glasses for my recently deceased Samsung HLT5089S DLP.

Cheers,

RobbW

Just bought the pair from bestbuy, watching avatar 3d as I type this. This is my first pair so I dont have anything to compare them to but so far they are very light and the 3d effect seems to be working great.
Just wanted all to know that while Best buy in my area of Nc (no magnolia close by either)does not carry the new glasses,I was able to order2 pair from an electronics store in NY....they will ship this PM...that were unpacking the shipment when I called..

Can someone please comment on, or test out, the range of these 3rd gen glasses? Older gen glasses had a range of only 10 feet, so curious of these are better.
