Moderate Efficiency Speakers for Integrated Tube Amps

Thread Starter
I am in the process of downsizing from large Dunlavy speakers with Levinson amplification to smaller floorstanding or bookshelf speakers with moderate power (35 watt EL34 or 40 watt KT88) integrated tube amplification. I don't need super high efficiency speakers, just efficient enough to be a good match for a tube amp. I am hoping for full-range sound at more modest listening levels.

After years of status quo, I ventured out recently to audition some new equipment. I listened to a low-powered (15 watt) integrated Leben tube amp paired to Dynaudio Focus 220 speakers (86 dB efficient). This was a great match although I am concerned that the sound will compress and the imaging will collapse at higher volumes or in a bigger space than the demo room.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm not familar with your Dunlavy speakers so pardon a slightly misinformed comment.

What about some Klipsch Cornwalls?

I AM familar with Klipsch and depending on your listening needs, a pair of Cornwalls might fit the bill. Need smaller? How about some Heresy's with a sub?

A 35-40W tube amp will drive a wide number of speakers, you are not limited to high efficiency speakers. Depending on your budget, take a look at Vandersteen (1C, 2c, 2ce, etc.) good matches for tube amps. Also, take a look at Spendor. I have a pair of Spendor 7/1 (88dB, 8ohm). Used a 25W tube amp with no issues at higher volume in a large room. Look at the SP100 for full range sound.

Since you liked the Dynaudio Focus 220, I would think either tube amp will adequately drive them.

Lots of discussion here regarding tube amps and speaker matches.

Interesting choice of amps BTW. Seems that the KT88 is a worthwhile step-up from the EL34. Some on-line searching shows the KT88 does very well with 86-88dB efficiency, 4 ohm speakers like the Focus 220.
