The Lord Of The Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition (Blu-ray) Review - Page 3

Ralph: Thanks for an excellent review. I had pre-ordered the Extended Edition as soon as it became available. I am a huge fan of these films and look forward to getting the package next week. Hopefully the green hue will not be much of an issue for me.

Thanks Ralph,

My wife and kids pre-ordered this set for me on Father's Day. Couldn't wait to get it then--now I'm chomping at the bit

How different is this from the six disc version?

Greetings,

The TE releases have 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks whereas these are 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

Fact or is it just my idea?

Greetings,

I would probably agree but haven't done any serious comparisons. I will run a few sequences and report back when time permits.

Great Review!!!! Excellent information.

I already have my pre-order into Amazon and cannot wait to view it for myself. I might have to upgrade my sound system to take full advantage of the 6.1 sound.

There is no way to know for certain at this point but if I had to guess I would say that what we are seeing is what was intended and a reissuance very well may not be in the cards.

Your call.

Regards,

Thanks for the feedback and clarification Ralph. This does help as always.

Only Fellowship of the Ring.

Radio silence. There hasn't being any official statement.
So no one knows whether there will be an exchange program or a new edition.
You can wait until:
1)It's on rental. You rent one and decide if you find it unacceptable.
2)WB makes an official statement. It's highly likely though that if there is a statement it will be after the release date.

Thanks for the feedback as well. Give's me a better understanding of the green thing.

I thought the TE's had a 6.1 matrix track with the EE's being discrete 6.1

I have been waiting for this, and I thank you Ralph for the detail of review. As for the green tint, I think it is a no go for me as I have the extended versions on DVD and will be happy with them till the green issue is resolved. (if ever)
Now, when will the Star wars review come? That's one I am interested in seeing.

I just pulled the trigger on the pre-order for this set, primarily because Best Buy has it for 69.99 which is 20 dollars cheaper than Amazon. The way I figure it, it's a damn low price for getting the set on the street date, and I'm good to go if they offer a replacement program for the FOTR discs. And if for whatever reason the green tint is there to stay, then I still paid a good price for thirteen good discs and two wonky ones. Remains to be seen just how bad (or not) the green is on my display, but overall it's a fair compromise for my budget vs my desire to see these films in some serious HD.

Hope this helps anyone still on the fence about making the purchase!

Can anyone tell me if the DVDs are region coded to a specific region?
For example is it ok to buy from overseas (I am
Located in region 4)

Great and most helpful review.

I'll be buying but I have to express my greatest concerns about the media they're pressed on... Each film while on 50GB blurays still need to be split in two? WTF!! Is it because of the even higher definition audio? And why o why do the extra stuff still come pressed on multiple DVD's when they can certainly be pressed on fewer BD's (25GB or 50GB)... IMHO, I'm starting to hate those BD/DVD/Digital combo packs that the studios try to force feed you... DISNEY you are the prime suspect in this...

Can't wait to pull a LOTR BD Trilogy couch potato marathon weekend....

Greetings,

The extended editions are over 3 hours long. Spreading them over two BD-50's allows for higher bitrates that give them room to "breathe" if you will. I would never complain about that..

Enjoy!

Just watched the FOTR EE and the sound is superb. I have watched the Theatrical version and don't remember the LFE being as tight and deep. This is a sonic tour de force.

John;

Can you weigh in on the green tint issue?
Thanks for the review Ralph.

I appreciate the concern, but here in Canada we have less fear of the dreaded green - we've elected a member of the Green Party our Canadian Parliment, and enjoyed the exploits of 2 hockey fans in spandex beside the Vancouver Canucks penalty Box.

$86 for the finest 12 hours of entertainment in the history of Cinema (if you're a fan). I've been waiting for years - it's a day 1 buy for me.

If "corrected" discs were to appear in 2015 for TFOTR that adresses this issue, I guess I'd need to buy it and watch the whole thing again. The things I must endure....

I have only seem the 1st film in its entirety. I have waited to order until this set was coming out as almost everyone said these versions fleshed out the story better. Ralph has given a most excellent review and I trust his reviews as he has been correct almost every time. The only thing that would bother me about the color issue is if Gandalf has a green beard (instread of white) and if the snow just looks green. I believe his horse is white too. Non of this would be natural and could possibly take me out of the movie. In any case, I have it ordered and am not cancelling. If it is an error and an exchange is offered I would take advantage but I will not be buying a future corrected set. Only time will tell. It doesn't bother me if a director revisits his movies before they come out the first time but do not like it after being released to the public as I see it as a way to make more money for really nothing more than letting technicians go over the film to do something new to it.

I only watched the first disc, ie. first half of FOTR. Nothing there that I noticed but thought it manifested itself in the scene on the mountain.

As always Ralph - great review. I decided to place my Amazon order, and apply a $10 discount. I hope the green tint is not a distracting issue. FOTH is my favorite of the trilogy.
