Reparable Marantz VP-12S4

Hi, I'm new here so y'all don't know me.

I have a question for some experts (obvi). I found this Marantz S4 on Videogon and its super cheap and I'm thinking of buying it but it has something wrong with it. It has these lines that appear on the image. You can find it on videogon for a better description under the DLP projectors for sale section (AVSF won't let me post a link). Anyway, what I was wondering is this a big costly repair, is it something that I could do myself if I had the right part (any ideas of what part is it and cost?), or is it a little blip into the service menu. If I could make it work, this seems like a great deal but I just wonder if its worth it.

It's not likely going to be easy fix, there's a dozen different circuit boards inside, not to mention the possibility of a damaged DLP chip. Plus he is selling it without the lamp. Marantz exited the front projector market a while ago, parts could be near impossible to find.

I'd sooner spend the $500 on an Acer 5360 3D DLP. It certainly doesn't have the Konica Minolta lens, but it will be a new projector with a warranty, fresh lamp and it can be used for 3D if it's an interest.

If you go that route I'll sell you my old one cheap. It has a broken air deflector which I broke replacing a noisy fan. It still works but overheats quickly as the air deflector no longer blows air where it should. I replaced it with another PJ as it would have been too expensive to get it fixed. It would be a great parts projector and I have 2 used bulbs with >1000 hours left between them. PM me if interested.

not a bad thing,unless its something obvious (color wheel ,fan)or its worth fixing,parts still available ,those sharps for 400 bucks might be nice.

I sent the guy a message a week ago regarding the bulb(as he is selling it separate) and he hasn't even responded back. Plus if you keep your eyes open and keep searching ebay, videogon, and avsforum classified you can find a working one for not much more than what he wants for the bulb plus non-working projector.

Projector repairs are rarely inexpensive and most of the time, NOT a DIY project. In most cases, all that's available are entire assemblies and not individual components. The cost of projectors has come down so much that it makes a lot of them disposable if something fails.

I've had a 12s4 for a few years now. I have had it repaired twice under warrantee at Superscope. You may want to give them a call, I think the parts for this unit might be drying up, and if not, very expensive otherwise.

Working correctly though, it throws superior picture, I really don't have any reason to upgrade yet. They do come up used on videogon from time to time.

Thanks everybody for your help and advice. I know I really let this one go stale.

I ended up buying Bob's Marantz and fixed the plastic part. I had it apart twice in the first couple days it was here and now it has fully recovered from surgery. I have been watching it constantly since and am loving it. It is an incredible machine and for what we paid, can't be beat!
