Oops, then my "retire the 46PZ800U to the beach house" idea would only work if you wanted to increase the screen size in the family room in the form of a used 50" or 58" PZ800U
At the beach house I'm using a vintage sound system based on my old 1970s Kenwood receiver and a pair of similar vintage Advent speakers. So I don't care about sound quality there.
Ah the good old days of simple analog signals
This brings up an important point - that vintage receiver presumably gets audio from your existing TV via an old-skool RCA red/white audio connection - but Panasonic dropped analog audio output RCA jacks on it's lower end models (X1 and S1) back in 2009 - but retained them on the 2009 G10 and V10 series (but these were the last Panasonics to have it). And now none of the 2010 or 2011 models have analog audio out at all. However there are a few digital/Optical-to-analog RCA audio adapters available which will enable you to use a newer 2010/2011 model though if you find a good deal on a newer TV.
All of the 2008 models (PX80U/PZ8xxU), 2007 models (PX75U/PZ7xxU), 2006 (PX60/PX600), and 2005 (PX50/PX500) models do have analog audio out RCA jacks so you'd be safe with any of these. There were a couple of 50" PX60Us on Craigslist for $300 & $325 during the past month that i'd seriously considered buying for my MIL's 86th birthday
