We Need Fee-Based Support

**I hope the Forum would consider allowing this "commercial" function just because the NEED IS SO GREAT**

I'm old, and although once a computer porfessional, no longer all that clever. IS THERE SOMEONE, OR PERHAPS A GROUP, WHO WILL DO PHONE SUPPORT FOR A FEE?

If not, maybe you more clever ones should consider it. Things like "how do I convert my current system?" and "I'm stuck, what does the Forum mean when they say ..."

Over and over again I've tried to follow directions posted on the Forum, only to find I either need some hardware, or software, or understanding that I lack, and it all sounds so beyond me.

A "ReplayTV Support for Dummies" group would be worth $$ to me. And there are probably others out there, maybe more than would like to admit. And then there are those of us who either don't know about the Forum, or like me, don't come here often because directions usually just go over our heads, so we just gave up (but are now becoming desparate).

As for pricing, please consider adopting pricing plans: "by the minute" and "by the function". And maybe, like MAC, an "all you can ask by the month or year" option.

DEAR FORUM MANAGERS - PLEASE ALLOW THIS DISCUSSION. IT WILL CALM THE NERVES OF THOSE OF US WHO HAVE ALL THIS EQUIPMENT BUT JUST CAN'T MANAGE THINGS WITHOUT MORE SUPPORT.

I think that you will always be able to get help here for free. The current discussion might be above your head, but that's because the experts are talking about ideas on how to fix the current situation. Once they know exactly what needs to be done, they will write clear step-by-step instructions on what to do. Then you will be able to ask specific questions on the parts you are confused about. But right now everything is in a state of flux, while everyone is figuring out what to do. If fact we don't even know if all the problems can be resolved, i.e setting the clock, activation etc.

So just wait until they come up more with more answers, and everything will clear up.

Personally I would prefer if all the advice remained free, because then the people who actually know what they are doing won't be tempted to remain silent unless someone pays them.

Personally, I'd like to keep things as-is. I know I enjoy this type of thing in my spare time, but hate having to be obligated (because I'm paid) to answer things. Plus what's a fair price? I'd be willing to bet that most people who would want to be paid won't do it at a price that you would be willing to pay (eg, if I can bill $200/hour doing IT work, why would I do Replay support for $20/hour?)

I understand what those of you who give your time and efforts for free are saying. I respect your position on keeping things free. I, too, volunteer hundreds of hours a year to causes I believe in. I believe that all who do this find it a source of renewal and inner wealth - the veritable source of living waters.

I guess I just find it hard to admit to someone who is being as generous as you guys are (and gals, no doubt) that I can't figure something out. I feel like if only I spent a few more hours searching the Forum, the answer is there, somewhere, and how dare I ask the same question that's been asked before and answered.

Daring to ask a question that might have been answered before feels like it is disrespecting your generousity. Does that make sense? If I just paid for the help, I could absolve myself of that kind of guilt ;-)

Plus I believe in voting with my dollars. Everyone needs to make a living, and I want to respect those who give of themselves. I consider everyone who does their job well worthy of pay in money, respect and 'eternal' reward too. God knows there are alot who take your money and do little or nothing for it.

Our current situation with Digital Networks is proof enough of that...

What's your system like? Dialup? Network attached?

Someone can remote into your PC and work on it, but controlling the Replay config is more complicated.

How much are you willing to pay? $20 $100?

I've found a way to thank you volunteers, or at least show some gratitude. I've just made donations to both WIRNS PayPal accounts (via http://www.wirns.com/).

As far as what I'd be willing to pay for support, I think $20 per 1/2 hr phone support, on my phone call's nickle. I guess thru paypal or ck.

Since I know just enough about security that I would be very uncomfortable to have another ever touch my keyboard, let alone hand over the reigns electronically, I would only consider phone support.

I maintain an old email address at friendlss@aol.com which I ck a couple times a week if you would like to talk.

In my experience some sort of remote desktop is the way to go. (I use VNC) It can get very frustrating talking to someone on the phone when you can't see what's going on.

That's my opinion anyway. I don't consider myself enough of a WiRNS export to help.. at least yet.

The first time I upgraded my ReplayTV, I wasn't sure how to do it myself. I also only had a Mac, not a PC, so I didn't have the equipment to do it. It turned out MikeyBoy lived only about an hour drive away, so I took my RTV down there, he upgraded it for me (this was before he started his business of selling preformatted RTV drives).

I paid him by taking him out to dinner.
