panasonic ES15 choosing recording times in line recording

My ES15 allows me to press record and start recording right away and you can keep pressing record again for raising the recording time to 30mins, 1hr, 1.5hr, 2hrs etc. But I want to make it stop after 24 mins. I don't know how to do that. If I choose FR then it allows me to set recording time - but to keep recording quality the same, say at SP level, I have to select 2 hours in FR for the first program but stop it at 24 mins, then choose 1:36 for the second, 1:12 for the third etc and I can make it work that way. The down side is it requires two steps - start and stop. I want to avoid the stop part and let the recorder stop automatically. Is there a way to do this? The only other option is scheduled recording for the tuner which I am not doing

As far as I know, the only options to specify a stop time for recording is the 30 min, 60 min etc. I KNOW this is of no help, but if you had a recorder with a hard drive, you could choose the next highest time and then trim off the excess. You CAN do the same thing with the ES15 if you use -RAM disks. I'm guessing that using -RAM disks isn't an option for what you want to do.

With a DMR-ES15 one may SCHEDULE a precisely timed recording, at any recording mode, to the tuner or a line input, IN1 for the rear panel composite or S-Video inputs or IN2 for the front panel composite or S-Video inputs. Use Input Select or the up/down cursors in the SCHEDULE menu, see pages 20 and 21 of the DMR-ES15 Operating Instructions. A FR recording may also be precisely timed, press the F. Rec button and enter the precise timing desired, see page 19 of the Operating Instructions.

As others have said you can only use OTR with canned speeds(not FR) and even then only in 1/2 or 1hr increments. I find this very inconvenient but as Luke said, with a HDD recorder it isn't so bad. You just over-record your program and easily trim off the excess after the recording is done, only takes a minute or less to do the trim.
In the case of your ES-15 I would schedule a 24 minute recording to start(from the line input) the next minute. When the recorder starts push PLAY on your player, 24 minutes later the recording will stop at whatever speed you used in your schedule.

I tried recording to RAM disk, I get a single VRO file for all titles and then I need to take it to a PC, invest in authoring software to decode this. I am looking for the quickest way to offload my DVR recordings. I probably will choose the 30 mins option and sacrifice some space or as second option try the scheduled recording. Thanks

It *ALWAYS* helps to completely describe what you want to do. In your original post, there was nothing about taking the disk to a PC. That was an omission that made me think you were just trying to make DVDs, not transfer content.

Yes, the -RAM disk will allow you to edit the titles, and get back to the lost spac eon the disk, but they are a pain to transfer as all the data is stored in a single data file, that is somehow strung together. The machines know how to reconstruct individual titles from this file, but as you discovered, it takes authoring software to do it on a PC.

Even though you said you don't want to do it, I recommend you use scheduled recordings.

my ultimate goal is to save DVR recordings as my DISH/Cable account is not going to last forever. I am a little hesitant to get another HDD DVD recorder as I am dependent on its hard drive which can fail. DVDs can last a long time but pain to create and manage. Ideally I would like to save them as PC recognizable mpeg/AVI/whatever files which I can periodically backup. I see three options:
1) invest in a HTPC and buy a hauppage HD PVR - Are you then dependent on its supplied software to play media files? in which case I may not like it.
2) use a RAM disk / DVD+RW to transfer stuff to PC - you need the decode process after you make DVD
3) make a bunch of DVDs and label them carefully - My original investment in the panasonic recorder can be used and I don't have to invest any more money except for DVD blanks which are very cheap.

I probably will settle for option 3 after may be trying out option 2.
