Well I finally got my projector bulb a couple of days ago, so I've been binging on Nightmare movies, finished Freddy's Dead last night.
Funny enough, part 2 and 3 feel like the biggest PQ upgrades to me. Yes 3 has a couple of shots which are a bit too dark, but these movies seem to be the least noisiest of the bunch, the most moments of "that HD look". 4-6 are overly grainy, I feel they could have been handled better. That said, they are still A LOT better than their DVD counterparts, because of happen stance I only compared Freddy's Dead to the DVD, the DVD godawful.
The darkening in Nightmare 4 is welcome, it notably helps several shots, namely where Freddy was overexposed. A plain example of this is the 1st shot you see Freddy where the camera pans up to him, his face in silloute as he says "ya shouldn'ta buried me, I'm not dead". On DVD his face was bright enough to make out that he wasn't talking in that shot, on the BD it's appropriatly dark, so the illusion of him talking works.
Also I have a cheap Panasonic BD player which I bought soley for the purpose of 2D-3D conversion. I'm happy to report that the ending of Freddy's Dead translates beautifuly to 3D! It's just as three dimensional as I remember it in theaters, though even better since it's full color. So if you have the capability via your display device or BD player, it's worth the effort. I bought the Panny T110 for $110, and got a free copy of Avatar.
Audio across the board is weak. The music ques are about the only thing that sound HD, it's crisp, loud, clear and spreads nicely over the soundstage. Onscreen action sounds plain bad, when things get intense, especially in 2-5 the audio sort of seems to dial down, as if trying not to offend the viewer. I'd swear the 5.1 DVD tracks have more oomph. Freddy's Dead is bit better, but still offers no surround activity. I'm watching New Nightmare tonight, I'm a bit nervous as I considered it to be an outstanding sounding DVD.
Far from perfect, but I'm still very happy to have them in high definition at last! Here's hoping for a remaster someday.
