canceled my order because it was not shipped today as promised. monday is a public holiday. so i have time to relax and waiting for impressions from others and getting the better deal (680$).

Hmm, and I thought the Acer would be the quietest one of them all.

If you happen to see rainbows with other dlp projectors, can you tell us how easily you see them on this Acer K330?

If it is then I don't want to try the other clones. With the projector on a table, the volume at a reasonable level for casual background watching, a window open for some background noise and sitting 4' away, it's quite audible in eco mode. It seems to run pretty cool though, maybe a little too cool. I hope someone else gets one soon to compare.


I can't see any. I think you would have to be really, really sensitive to it to see them on these models.

Also, does it play .mkv files straight from the USB?

Sigh, I'm not getting my projector this weekend, thanks to FedEx! Estimated delivery Oct 3, 2011 by 6:00 PM.

I'm worried about the noise issue now. But then again when blee0120 first got his Optoma he wrote "It's pretty loud. I turned it on Eco mode and it was still noticeable." Then after, blee and everyone seems to find the Optoma noise level pretty acceptable and a bit of a non issue. That's if the Acer is the same noise level.

HenryDudley, how's the picture quality? Do you have or seen any other pj to compare it to? Thx!

Thanks for checking. The reason I ask is last year's Acer K11 had almost no rainbow effect compared to the competition, but, it was also using a different dlp chip and phlatlight LEDs. This year the "500 lumen" models are all using the same basic hardware, so I'm very curious to see if the Acer will be the same as the others regarding RBE.

When I checked the dongle didn't seem to be shipping yet.


Sort of, I guess, but none of the H.264 MKVs I have are playable on it. The picture is full of blocky artifacts and unwatchable. I suspect they are encoded with x264 and a custom profile that the Acer just can't handle. From my quick testing it seems likely that you won't be able to play any of the 720p MKVs you can find on the internet. All the low-res DivX/Xvid files I've tried have been fine though, as have even 1080p H.264 QuickTime MOV files which play fine with no skipping or glitches. It's worth pointing out that the player doesn't seem to have any controls other than play, pause and stop. There doesn't seem to be any way to rewind/fast forward. That could probably be fixed with a firmware update though. The MKV issue though I'm not so sure about. The projector might be using a hardware decoder that just can't do it, period.

The built-in speaker(s?) is okay for what it is. Not exactly a subwoofer and has the unavoidable tinny sound, but it's not bad and is very loud. The audio out is also not bad and works fine. It will also output sound from HDMI if anyone is wondering about that.



I haven't seen the Optoma and noise is of course subjektive, but my opinion is that the K330 (at least mine) is too loud. It's more than just noticeable and slightly high pitched. If someone thinks they can have it sitting on the table in front of them and watch something with a reasonable volume (i.e. not loud) I think they'll be disappointed, and this seems like something you'd want to do with a projector this portable. It's hard to describe how loud someone is, so I don't know what to say. I guess maybe take the fan noise your average laptop makes with the fans on full and then double or triple it.


I can't really say much of value as it's just pointed at a wall at the moment. I don't think it's fair to judge it based on that, even though it looks very good and the contrast seems decent.

It looks better than I thought it would though (although the pixel layout is a bit weird, not that you can see it unless you're sitting too close) and is brighter than I thought. Just pointed at a wall it's bright enough in eco mode with a 60W ceiling lamp and 25W on a wall away from the projection and just regular curtains with late afternoon light (no sun) shining through them to be watchable for casual TV at 80" (the most I've tried).

I would say you can get better bulb projectors at an equivalent price, but for other uses than as a permanently mounted HT projector in a high end home theater it looks great.... Had it not been for the noise level which makes me not want to recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they're in for and is expecting something quiet. I'm sorry to keep repeating it, but the thing is loud (and I don't think mine is just broken). I'd like to see others comment on the noise level of theirs, so I hope everyone doesn't cancel their orders just because of me!

I think the pitch makes it more annoying (and is caused by the designed rather than the fan itself). It seems less annoying if I hold a finger over one of the inlets, even though that doesn't reduce the noise level.

If you are happy with the picture quality, it's pretty easy to make a noise reducing "hushbox" especially with the Acer being such a small projector.

Appreciate your quick replies. For me the noise is no longer an issue, been working on an adjacent walk in closet and I will be able to place the projector inside of it.

HenryDudley, as far as fan noise, are you using it in eco mode or with the LEDs on max?

He said he was on Eco mode and still it's too loud.

Can you please confirm the location of the cooling Intakes and Exhausts?

I don't know what others have said, but to me it looks like the intakes are on the left side and the left half of the front, and the exhaust the right rear corner and on the front to the right of the lense. The right side seems to get hottest.

113" from about 11' in eco mode, 60W lighting. The camera is making the room slightly darker than it is, but yeah. So it'll easily do that in a darker room and with a screen. I can't remember who it was that asked something about size and distance.

Not that I can tell, no. I've only used it in eco mode though.

Maybe it's a temperature-dependant thing? I have it sitting on a table and it doesn't get very hot. Way below 50C. With the lights off I almost think it might have benefitted from another eco mode that is less bright and quieter. I am getting slightly more used to the noise though.

could anybody please post a video using a mkv from usb,playin some ps3/xbox360? When i got my hs200 i was the first one to show all kinds of stuff and here i'm still waiting thanx in advance,it would be very appreciated! i think i'll go for this pj, the other once not having audio out are going to be useless for me! For all the people who say these pjs are cheap and not HT, whatever, the picture quality if more than fine for me in terms of big screen! LED pico rocks!!!

Can you be more specific about what it is you want to see played? MKV is not a video format, it is a multimedia container that can contain any format. If you mean the 720p/1080p H.264 MKVs encoded with x264 that you can "find on the internet," then based on my experience the Acer cannot play these.

oh sorry, yes i meant those , that's too bad so it means i'll have to convert them in some compatible file (no prob with that). thanx for the info

I made a quick video of it pointed at a (not quite white) wall with about 75". Sound from the built-in speaker. All default settings. Sorry about the phone quality, it's not exactly an HD camera. You can see what I mean about MKVs in the second part. It's a shame, really.
