In-wall vs on-wall speaker set for Home Theater??

Can some of you experts give me some advice on installing in-wall vs on-wall speakers in my home theater? I've gotten quotes from different installers and one says in-wall is the way to go, but the other says on-wall is way better quality. Not sure if they are just trying to sell me what they get more money for, or there actually is a difference.

This will be a dedicated theater room for movies and sports.

So far the recommendations I've gotten were for the following:

In-wall:

Setup 1 - Klipsch - RC-5502-W (Center), R-5800-W (Front - Left, Right, 2 Rear), R-5650-S dipole (2 sides)

Setup 2 - Episode - 700 series for Front (Left, Right, Center), 300 Series (2 rear, 2 sides)

On-wall:

Setup 1 - Paradigm - Millenia 20 for Front (Left, Right, Center), ADP di-poles (two sides), Millenia 10 Hybrid (2 rear)

Setup 2 - Martin Logan - Ticket (Front - Left, Right, Center, 2 rear), Motion FX dipole (2 sides)

Setup 3 - Triad - Mini LCR for Front (Left, Right, Center), 2 Dipoles for Sides, Micro LCR (2 rear)

Thanks in advance for the help

All things being equal, on wall is better than in wall. One of the issues is the infinate baffle many speakers use...in other words, they do not have a back box on the speaker so it uses the inside of your wall as its box. Since they have no way of knowing the size of your wall's inside (though they can estimate it very well based on average home builds), it will not be perfect. An inwall with a back box is preffered.

That said, good manufacturers would never make bad speakers on purpose, so any of them you picked will sound good.

I like Paradigm, and I have the Millenia 20 Trio and am also using Millenia 200s for my Front Wides. I think the Trio is a great speaker. It really does fill up the room, and has great sound quality. I replaced a Cinema CC and two Cinema 90s with the Trio. It does not give as wide a sound stage as three seperate speakers do, but if you do not have a lot of width anyway you will not lose much. My left and right were only about a foot further away and my wife hated the way the Cinema 90s looked, sitting on their stand out in the room. She thinks the Millenias are sexy speakers.

I prefer direct firing speakers for my surrounds. I had the Cinema ADPs and now use the Cinema 90s instead. Eventually, I will replace my surrounds with MilleniaOne speakers and use them for front heights as well.

I heard Triad are excellent as well, but I never listened to them.

Hey there. My buddy had the episodes installed and did pretty well for him but were not loud enough for the room they were in. We then got him hooked up with Martin Logan
in-walls just to match a larger ML center I had him buy. The ML's were a bit bright until he put the covers back on and ran Audyssey again. He says they fill the room much better than the Episodes.
