Hi mate, good to see another Aussie in here. Would like to see your build progress. I don't think you will find the Owens corning material over here. I will be in the same boat as you when I get to the treatment stage. A Sydney company called acoustica was recommended to me. I think they are at acoustica.com.au. They sell high density batts which should be close. Don't bother with trying to source Linacoustic. I spoke with the Aussie JM distributor and they can't bring it into Australia without all of the certifications blah blah blah. Please keep us informed with what you come up with. Greg.

Hi guys,

Really not ignoring my own thread ... just back from CEDIA and trying to dig myself out from under a pile of !@#$%

Lots of stuff to post but it'll probably have to wait until the weekend.

Roof of the house going on as I type this !!!

That's a poor excuse! Must have been terrible at CEDIA! Bet you found a million ways to spend money there. You must be pretty happy with the progress of the builder... going ahead very quickly.

Looking forward to more photos.

Peter,

The exterior will be rendered and painted a pale blue/green/grey ... very hard to describe ... it's Taubmans "Blue Willow" should you be inclined to check it out.

Windows in the theatre are a BCA requirement. Any inhabitable room must have a window area of 10% of the floor area. I decided not to test this out with council as we thought it would look weird from the outside without them, plus resale considerations. I still have to figure out the timing of closing them up coordinated with certifying authority inspections and occupation certificate.

The room has 6 windows but I only need 2 for compliance so I may cover in the front and rear (where most of the theatre fitout goes) but leave the two on the side wall until after we're in.

I agree that here in Oz your best bet for fibreglass / rockwool is to find a CSR / Bradford trade supplier and see if they'll sell you small quantities.

Greg,

CEDIA was brilliant, although I find myself in no man's land with respect to a new projector. I don't want DLP but ideally I'd like around 1500 calibrated lumens for my 4m wide 2.35 screen. I will probably stick with my Sony VW60 which will be woefully inadequate, but it'll give me a benchmark to decide exactly how much brightness I need. If Sony or JVC could give me enough light at around $10k I'd already have my order in. The Sony 4k is way too much for me, plus I don't really want to jump into a first gen product. I may end up having to go LCD. Any suggestions ?

So far I remain very happy with my builder. Not much to photograph at the moment as the structure remains pretty much as per my last photos and the plumbing and wiring is not very exciting.

Hi Peter, from my limited knowledge with a 4 metre screen you are going to need a pretty impressive projector. Some of the new JVC effective 4k units look very nice. For a less expensive fix in the interim, what about the Panasonic PT AE 7000. On paper it claims 2000 lumens to beef up for 3D and the reviews I have read have been pretty good at that price point. Otherwise I am hearing good reviews on the new Runco models. Hell, I will just be happy to get my 2 year old Mitsubishi 6800 out of the box and have that for a while. Have you looked at the HC 9000 Mitsubishi?
Ps, love the seats. Renders look great as well.

With all the new projectors having only just been announced / released at CEDIA I'm very keen to see independent testing, particularly of brightness. AFAIK the new JVCs are spec'd at around 1300 lumens which ends up around 8-900 calibrated. I think the new Sony 95 is about the same, as are the Mitsubishi and Epson. It seems a very popular output. I'd seen that the Panasonic is spec'd at 2000 and that certainly grabbed my attention. I'd really hoped that 3D would mean significantly brighter projectors from JVC and Sony but it just hasn't happened. Maybe the next round will get there and I grab a Panasonic to get me through.

Peter, I need to start following your thread (and start my own), my room size is very similar to yours, except I have stadium seating so your cubic footage is likely more. I also have a Dennis Erskine design and originally had Procella 815's spec'ed for LCR, so I am surprised you are going with 610s. Even after talking to Anders at CEDIA I still thought I needed P815s.

My timeframe may be similar to yours as well, I am trying to get finished by Jan-Feb. 2012. I have the outside framing done but the rest should be starting soon.

I too am very concerned about PJ brightness considering I am already going to be fighting with gain using an AT screen. I get a lot of conflicting information on what brightness projector I need for a 12'-14' screen (right now likely 13'1" or so if do the room as Dennis drew). I already know I am dropping the curved screen after seeing the 4k and native cinemascope options at CEDIA--I do not see a long term need for an A-lens.

Hi Matt,

When I first discussed my room with Gerben he recommended the P815s (the P610 didn't exist), but they were more than I wanted to spend. I'd actually decided to go elsewhere, but then Gerben sold me on the idea of the P610. I'm probably right at the limit of room size for them, but after hearing them at CEDIA in a room which was probably only a metre or so shorter than mine, I'm happy that they'll do the job extremely well.

My screen is 10' wide at 16:9 and 13' wide at 2.35:1 so very similar to yours. I'm used to bright after a couple of years with my Sony VW60 on a 8.5' Hi-Power. I don't want DLP and would prefer LCOS / SXRD / LCOQ but LCD is also an option. I'll wait until all the new models are tested and probably pick up whatever is brightest for under $10k. I already have an A-lens and Cineslide.

Looking forward to reading your build thread !

Wow another amazing build coming along. I think maybe in a year I will have to make an excuse to drive east. There are quite a few HT rooms I could learn from.

When is CEDIA again?

Sucks there aren't more builds near by. But being that I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Thanks. Not much to report in the way of theatre progress. Most of the effort at the moment is going into getting the house fully watertight, which means all the rendering needs to be completed and that's a sloooooow job !!!

I think I've chosen my fabric colours so will try to get a photo of those up over the next few days.

Good to hear things are moving along Peter! Which colours did you choose? Would be interested to see what you came up with.
As I will be most probably traveling next Monday, I think drywalling will be off Sunday. May give it a go with a mate on Saturday and see how we go but I will be busy getting all my stuff together for the trip. 33 degrees and about 600 percent humidity up there now. Good NT Draught weather!

Here's a shot of the carpet with the fabrics ...



Underexposing by 2 f stops got me quite close to the true colours.

Both are Trilogy One ... the lighter one is Ocean 110 and the darker is Cobalt 102. Current plan is for the lighter colour to the side and rear walls ... darker colour to the columns and screen surround. I'm still undecided what colour for the skirting, soffit and ceiling baffle. These will be painted so I can have any colour I want. Suggestions ?

How are you stretching the fabric? frames or channel?
