"Simple Solutions" for 3000 users? Well, not really.

I have been following the thread about "simple instructions for ReplayTV 3000 owners?". I have several showstoppers and at least one 3000. Some 4500s too.

So my 4500s right now are working ok and are lifetime activated. My showstoppers are dialing in nightly and that all works fine, as expected this being prior to the drop dead date of 7/31/2011.

One of my showstoppers is at a vacation home. None of the WIRNS and Freesco solutions are appropriate for that location. There's no broadband (unless I am there and can leech wifi from the neighbors, which is fine with them).

There has been a clock set console released for the early dialup units, and there may be one for the later networked units soon. And why not? That's a good solution.

It seems the other thing that's needed for the future is a dialup settings console for the older non networked units.

We need a way to
  1. Set dialup numbers, discarding the dialup numbers that the replaytv company used.
  2. Enter login username and password for the dialup account.
  3. Connect to an address, which could be a wirns server I host at my regular home, or one that is shared among users who need it. That would be a better solution.
  4. Login with a username and password to that box so it can get the needed data.

And, since the clock hack was done years ago by some clever person, and since we have so many clever persons here, can all this be done?

Or is this just too much of a hack? From reading the threads it seems like some people know a lot about the internal software in those things.

And more may emerge, I suspect the actual engineers who made all this are actually lurking here. After 7/31 we may find guys with sourcecode, and more. Maybe they can't talk yet because of their nondisclosure. Maybe they can just email the stuff to someone who would then know what to do with it.

It could happen!

I'm not sure such a screen could be created without the ReplayTV developerment tools. IIRC the clock set screen was written by Replay for the TV/PVR combo unit that was abandoned ages ago. It just needed to be ported to the other models.

I agree that dialup solutions are currently complicated, and very dependent on your hardware. It's not simple.

There are a couple of ideas being tossed around... we'll see.

It's VXWorks, right?

Some guys around who are familiar with that platform. and it's entirely possible that we may someday find the sourcecode.

As I said, i suspect some engineers are lurking.

Remember that guy not too long ago who said he was an engineer who worked on commercial advance? He posted here, I think.

It's unlikely that any source code will be made available, although we can always hope!!

I wonder how hard it would be to tweak Commercial Advance to make it work better. I think I remember way back that they said they could make it better just by tweaking a few parameters, but they never released a new version after that.

VxWorks is the core operating system. I am pretty sure it can be configured on an application-specific basis, and was for the ReplayTV. As a result, some "standard" VxWorks commands are not available for the 5000-series replays, but for all I know earlier models might have a most standard suite since the 5000-series is when they got serious about security.

At any rate, most of the real RelayTV stuff is application code that is not part of VxWorks itself. That application code is distinct from VxWorks and would be owned and controlled by different people, presumably DirecTV.

Now, it is true that a lot of the core functions can be reconfigured even without the source, so I thin the picture looks promising for people who can run some kind of little server.
