The faint line you see next to the borders is an encoding issue that is largely on all Blu-ray releases because it is nearly impossible to do a transition like that without some edge. This is also why the black bars aren't perfectly centered within a 16x9 frame. It almost always help to have the black bars at a block transition. This faint line is hardly a distraction and the "ringing" appears nowhere else in the transfer.

No, that is definitely not it. This ringing has been on almost all Paramount animated Blu-rays (but not the 3D versions for some reason) and it does affect the actual image. See the comparison at the bottom of this post.

I rarely blind-buy Blu-ray's but decided to with Rango...first the Blu-ray is getting excellent reviews for its reference video and almost as good audio...next the story seems pretty good and finally the price of $14.99 at Amazon is too good to pass up

$15 is my price point for Blu-ray's and to get a new release at that price is a great deal

I don't trust screen grabs, never have. You have no idea how much stuff has been done to the original frame to even have the screen grab. HTTYD had some video issues, I even noted it in my review. While it looks good, it is hardly a reference title. Megamind was even worse, with obvious scaling issues including an abundance of moire. Rango has the faint line near the black bars but there is no other ringing in the transfer. It is one of the best I've seen from Paramount.

Then why does The Incredibles have it as well?

And Gnomeo and Juliet, The Illusionist, Despicable Me, Cars, etc, etc, etc. Hardly a Paramount specific issue and again related to the nature of compression and the transition I referred to earlier.

It doesn't? I don't have my disc yet, but I can't see anything in the screenshots posted here and there. Not in Cars or any other Pixar Blu-ray either for that matter.

Wrong and wrong. The fact that the 3D version of How to Train Your Dragon doesn't have it shows us two things: first, that it wasn't meant to be there. Second, and more importantly, that it is completely avoidable. The ringing on the Paramount (and other) titles has nothing to do with compression and is clearly a mastering problem.

It doesn't. I tested it myself in the Incredibles thread. Someone pointed out "ringing" around the black bars in a specific scene, and even in Photoshop, the pixels are exactly the same as all the pixels around them.. there is no ringing. The individual was seeing ringing only on his TV/monitor/whatever. And, I checked the disc myself as it played on my TV, and there was no sign of any ringing on the edges of the screen, in any scene on the disc.

If someone sees ringing on Rango, I'd like to see the offending screenshots, and we'll have a look-see.

Reasons that the ringing could be there:

1. Compression - Too much compression causes ringing on hard edges. Mostly this occurs with MPEG-2 on DVD.
2. Compression - If the letterbox bar is not aligned to a macro block border, you will see schmutz along the bar.
3. Scaling - If they resized the image to a lower resolution with the black bars present, you would get ringing along the hard edge. Normally starting with a higher resolution source is good, but not if you insert the black bars before you scale. Its best to insert after resizing.
4. If they apply detail enhancement (possibly NR) you can get ringing along the hard edge.

1. Not the case, there is no issues with the compression on this disc and the bitrate is anything but starved.
2. Could be the case, but the bars look like they end on a macroblock
3. This is probably what they are doing considering the track record of Paramount/Dreamworks titles that have scaling issues.
4. Not likely as NOTHING else in the image shows any type of ringing, which wouldn't be the case if it was detail enhancement.

Yup, fake grain; one of the worst idea's in the history of video (IMO).
Besides being worthless in this film, it all so flattens out the picture. I see great depth; until the fake grain structures fills the backround. Then, I see no depth beyond the fake grain.

There are black lines near the bottom & top of the letterbox lines, respectably.
The preview for "PinB" does not show the same digital artifact.
The preview for "KFP2 " does not show the same digital artifact.
The preview for "OOK" does not show the same digital artifact.
The preview for "R:TVG" does not show the same digital artifact.

The preview for "Rango" does show the same digital artifact.
And the deleted scenes DO NOT HAVE IT!

Cause this artifact isn't even on most of the video segments on this particular Blu release.
I wouldn't call this "faint" either; its very visible & besides the black line there is ringing w/it as well.

I've been aware/sensitive too this artifact since '98.
Bugs the heck out of me.
When its really prevalent the top line will distort the picture.

Shame bout the artifacts tho!

There is some faint grain in the film, but I only noticed it on a handful of shots, when there was a very flat background (i.e. the sky). It's not really visible at all in most scenes where there's so much detail. The backlighting on my TV is slightly uneven (it's an older model), and that shows up a lot more on wide sky shots than the grain did.

I can't say I noticed any banding around the bars, but I wasn't really looking for it. It definitely wasn't distracting in any way, otherwise I would have noticed it.

Okay, video quality aside, what does everyone think about the actual movie? You know, that thing where they talk and act and all that goofy stuff that has nothing to do with counting the pixels on the screen 15 times during the show to make sure none of them disappeared.

Is the content worth a damn or does it warrant ignoring?

I liked it well enough to buy the movie yesterday. If you like westerns, it's worth a look. Rent it if you're not sure.

Thanks, Jedi. I actually ordered it from Amazon with the discount code but UPS has apparently lost it. After reading some reviews from members here I share a taste in movies with, I was thinking this was a blessing in disguise that was going to allow me to not have to pay for a mistaken blind buy.

Rango is the perfect movie for movie lovers. Verbinski saluted so many films in this movie its ridiculous, its fun just watching it trying to catch the movie references, like the ones to Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, The Man with No Name Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in the West, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and many many more.

The film is freakin' genius, I loved it.

Anyone who seriously doesn't like it... well, I truly don't know what to say, all I could think is that, A) They hate westerns, B) They just don't like animated films.

Absolutely anyone who likes westerns and enjoys animated films, will love Rango.

The story is a trip (trippy).
In this vanilla world Hollywood lives in, how often can you say that?!?!
Too long & too many film references, tho (IMO).
The story (characters) could have stood on their own; w/o overly long chase scenes & relying on other movies lines/characters too stand out.

The art work is beyond words & out of this world.
"Toy Story" was cartoony realistic, "Bug's Life" was beautifully realistic, & "Walle" was gritty realistic. This takes it too a whole new level.

If you can afford it, this title (not transfer) should be supported for story & art alone!

Oh my, I did not see this one coming at all. I loved the lizard, the voice and the character created by Depp BUT this film did not speak to me at all. The story was kinda too mature and boring for an animation and I would be shocked if any kid 14 and under understood it or liked it. The other creatures in the film were just not very likeable, interesting or memorable at all and ugly.

The positive is that this BD may just be the nicest pixar ever created with the most incredible amount of detail and is just lovely on your big screen if you have front projection. I kept reading about the grain but honestly could not detect any at all, just crisp sharp colors with 3 dimensional image and yes 2.35:1 CR. What a shame I cannot watch it again like with up or How to train your dragon. I was weened on westerns like Bonanza, Wild wild west, Gunsmoke, the Lone ranger, Maverick so Im a fan but had a hard time with this material. I have no idea how some kid born in the 90's can follow this or enjoy it.

BIG time blk & wht digital debris for me; right off the bat (& thoughout/'cept in the darkest scenes).

However, I thought it was sooooo badd, I had a defective disc!

Pixar had nothing to do with it. The animation was done by ILM.
