Transfering HD DVDs to Blu Ray. Illegal?

I am interested in transfering many of my HD DVDs to Blu Ray(or having them transferred), the ones without lossless audio, ie the majority. Seems to me it's all media that I purchased, so I should have the right to transfer it to a different disk. I am running Windows 7 64bit, and have a dual core 2.8 processor. I have a Blu Ray burner, I'd just need the 360 HD DVD drive I suppose. My video card and monitor are supposed to be HDMI compatable, but I can't seem to play Blu Ray on the system.

Do I have the capability hardware and OS wise to get the job done? And is there anyone who could help, and or do this for me? Sorry if this post is out of line, but again, I bought the media in the 1st place, as long as I'm not reselling it I can't see a problem.

Your hardware and OS should be fine. You may need to resolve the issue of not being able to play BDs. What kind of problem do you have when you try to play a commercial BD?

For what you want to do, you need some free software (like MultiAVCHD or ClownBD) and some non-free software (like AnyDVD or DVDFab).
Once you have your HDDVD drive (I use a 360 drive also), you use AnyDVD or DVDFab to decrypt the discs. Easiest to use is AnyDVD, it saves a couple steps later on.
Then MultiAVCHD or ClownBD to convert to BD format and burn. Search and you will find.

I did the same thing with a 360 drive (was $25) and a bunch of HD-DVDs (between $2 and $20 on Amazon). And I have Windows 7 64-bit. But in my case I convert to MKV to watch with a WDTV Live, or BD folders to watch with a Dune. Ah, failed technology gives me several movies in HD that are not on BD (yet)...

What you want to do (and others have done) is not illegal, but parts of the process are technically violations of the (unconstitutional) DMCA.

I have been doing the same with many of my colleciton of 80+ HD-DVDs. Unfortunately, you will find that a number of the movies (Superman series, Mission Impossible series) will not fit a 25Gb BD-R. Otherwise, I use either my 360 drive or LG drive with AnyDVD and Clown-BD. However, I do not create the BD from Clown-BD. I check the resulting files with Image Burn before I burn to make sure that they will fit. The files that are too big, I save the resulting stream files to play on my HTPC. I have also been purchasing BD cases @ Bestbuy (States) because they can hold 2 discs - the original HD DVD and new BD-R I create. This way, when I am not around, my family can choose whether they want to watch the full package with extras on HD DVD or just movie on BD. Also, as I have an A-2 that does not do TrueHD directly, they can get the full audio on the Samsung BD player, if they wish. If you want more info, pm me directly

I think DVDFab Passkey Lite works with HD DVDs. If not there's always DumpHD.

I've been trying to do this without a lot of luck. I rip the hd DVD with dumpHD, then I try converting to blu-ray format using either multiavchd or tsMuxer and burn with ImgBurn but I can't seem to get the audio right especially with lossless formats. Half the time I end up with video and no audio at all on my BDRE. Can someone give me a complete example with settings on how best to do this?

I would suggest using ClownBD. It will do it all in one step (except recompression if needed).

It's important to keep in mind that DD+ is not supported on Blu-Ray so you either have to convert it to RAW PCM which takes up a lot of space and can't be properly played on a system with SPDIF or live with converting the DD+ to DD or using the DD track from the HD-DVD (if it had one).

TrueHD on HD DVD isn't compatible with BD, either. It needs to be converted from a .thd file to a .thd+ac3 file. eac3to can do this, and multiAVCHD might be able to do it as well since it's basically a GUI for a bunch of different programs including eac3to.

This is exactly the kind of thing I can't figure out. There is a checkbox in multiavchd to enable eac3to, but I don't know what I am supposed to do with the other setting there. Can't I convert the TruHD to LPCM? I have tried but it always seems to fail.

You might just have to demux with eac3to first. There are various GUIs available but the command line interface provides more functionality.

Are you sure about that? I only have 3 HD-DVD's with TrueHD, but when I use eac3to on them directly they show no embedded AC3 track. However, after I mux the track into a blu-ray and point eac3to at it, it reports an embedded AC3 track. I know none of the tools created and embedded an AC3 track into the TrueHD stream, so that means it had to be there all along.

Okay, so of the 3 HD-DVD's I have with TrueHD audio (Training Day, Balls of Fury, & Inside Man) all 3 have a valid / real 640kbit/sec embedded AC3 stream in them which means they should be Blu-Ray compliant audio streams.

Hmm. I only ever used eac3to to demux, and the one time I tried muxing in a .thd track with TSMuxer before converting it to thd+ac3, it wouldn't accept it.

I'm attempting a conversion of Blade Runner (final cut) from hddvd to blu using multiavchd right now. Set it to convert truehd to lpcm. I'll update when it is done.

Well, failure. I got great video, but no audio at all. I just included the Feature_1.evo and feature_2.evo files, removed all the audio files except the TrueHD, and set eac3to to convert TrueHD to LPCM. Here is my Log:

I've only done movie only discs, with no menus using ClownBD so I'm afraid I can't help you with this method.

I don't think the menu has anything to do with it... it won't convert the TrueHD audio to LPCM. Same thing happens is I don't use any menus. eac3to is where the problem is. Does ClownBD use eac3to? If so, than I have a problem that you have solved...

Furthermore, multiavchd seems to think EVERY audio track on HD DVD's is TrueHD, even when I know they are DD+.

Oh... You're trying to keep the all the audio and video tracks? E-AC3 / DD+ isn't compatible with Blu-Ray so it's converting it to LPCM then AC3 encoding it. It looks like you might have the option for the TrueHD track set wrong. I set it to unconverted.

If you want an honest answer, yes it is illegal to copy DVDs. Read the warning banner on the front of each and every copyrighted movie. It doesn't matter whether you sell it or is only for personal use. It is illegal.

Tried several direct from disc. Selecting only the movie and audio. They don't even give me the option to select anything but the TrueHD audio. Set to uncoverted or Core doesn't matter, they all abort almost immediately with a log like this:

It looks like eac3to when used through ClownBD inserts the AC3 stream into the THD. At least that's what the bold line below seems to show. I guess I missed that detail before when I was doing this.

You are decrypting the discs with something like AnyDVD HD or DVDFab HD Decrypter right first?

Tried a few straight from disc... yeah, that was dumb!!! I do have some decrypted, and if I use anything other than TrueHD for the audio it works fine (Blade Runner with DD+, and Aeon Flux with DTS both work). Just can't get the TrueHD to work. Is there some other tool, a decoder or something I need? What is that line about decoding with libav/ffmpeg all about?
