yup. Got the refund last monday. Just curious though, what happens if it gets even chaeaper before 14 days are up? Will amazon pricematch twice?

My understanding is that the HX820 somehow "fakes" local dimming whereas the HX729 has a legit full array local dimming.

Because when I look at the HX729 I think, wow that's a nice TV.

When I look at the HX820, I have to change my pants.

Okay, after playing with the TV for a bit I take back what I said. Lowering the sharpness to 0 is way too low. I currently have mine set at 45 and that's about as low as I'd go. Any lower and things get blurry.

As for picture, I'm at 82 at the moment and that seems to work well with Warm 1. But again, much of this stuff is personal preference. I've had TVs calibrated and I ALWAYS end up tweaking some things when he leaves.

You know...I have always wondered that same thing. I think the answer is two fold, 1) the features don't always do as much as we think they do, and 2) professional calibrations always have the same goal, to make the image look as close to the original content as possible. So if the edges are enhanced, the contrast is tweaked, even if it looks better people would say it robs the original artist (the director) of their artistic intent in the image. For me, I am probably somewhere in the middle. I don't turn all the features on and crank them up, but I don't keep them off either. I play around and keep a fair number of them set to low, some off and I have some like LED Dynamic Control set all the way up to "standard" because I can't stand looking at any clouding. Live Color for example is always off for me as I think it makes skin-tone looked burned. But I think that Black Corrector and Adv. Contrast Enhancer look better set to low.

Here are my settings. This is a work in progress and may continue to change as I tweak stuff... My inputs are all HDMI (PS3 and Xbox 360 both of which I use for gaming and streaming Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and playing Blurays.)

Custom

Backlight: 4
Picture: 85 (82-85 seems like the right range)
Brightness: 50 (May go down to 47'ish, but need more black pluge testing)
Color: 50
Hue: 0
Color Tempature: Warm 1
Sharpness: 45 (I think the range is somewhere between 42-48)

price in amazon is back upto $2798

I can't believe i got $790 off of this tv

now i just need to buy an entry level receiver and two front speakers (dont need a 5.1), because the sound really does SUCK, at least in our living room which is like 30 ft by 20 ft. Even my mom thinks the sound is bad, and she still doesn't know how to find her contact list in her cell phone, thats how tech savy she is.

I got this TV for $1,500. It's the deal of a lifetime.

The journey to a brand new $1,500 Sony 55HX820 from Sony.

1. Bought Sony 55NX810 TV from Amazon for $2400 on sale which included a free 3D kit (two pairs of glasses, 3D sync transmitter and movie), free Sony PS3 and three 3D Bluray Movies and four 3D PS3 Game Vouchers.

2. Amazon did a price match lowering cost to $2300.

3. TV power supply broke, Amazon sent exchange with three more 3D Bluray Movies and four 3D PS3 Game Vouchers.

4. Second TV had terrible clouding. So annoyed by the process I called Amazon to initiate a full return. Amazon talked me into getting an exchange and offered $150 off price to keep TV.

5. Amazon exchanged. Sent me the 3rd TV, which came with...yes, three more 3D Bluray Movies and four more PS3 3D Game Vouchers. Since they gave me $150 back on my credit card, my final purchase price is now $2,150. I also now own nine 3D Bluray Movies, twelve 3D PS3 games and a Sony PS3 I don't need or want...what to do...what to do...

6. Sold the free Sony PS3 (I already owned one), the nine 3D Bluray Movies, twelve 3D PS3 Game Vouchers on ebay (craigslist for the PS3) for a total of $650.00. Keep in mind, many of these 3D Bluray movies were Sony exclusives so they went for a good chunk of change on ebay. This now brings my final purchase price to $1,500 for a brand new Sony 55NX810.

Now skip ahead 6 months...

7. Sony 55NX810 breaks and Sony does not have the correct parts. They offer a new 55NX720 which I decline because it's only a 120Hz panel and I'm not an idiot. After fighting with them, they agree to send a new Sony 55HX820 to replace the broken TV.

Voila....a 55HX820 for $1,500.00 To be fair, I didn't exactly plan to get to this place, but damn, Sony kept packaging 3D movies in the new boxes and Amazon said I was welcome to keep so there you have it.

I realize my dealing with Amazon isn't normal. I buy A LOT from Amazon (including thousands of dollars of electronics) and am a Prime member so I get AAA customer service.

Not sure if these new HX series employ the same setting standards as my NX.

But.... go to Sound Settings, Change to Custom Settings, Increase OFFSET to maximum, go to equalizer and increase all Hertz by 3-5 (depending on your preference)

and VOILA.

I still think getting a receiver is a must. Spending this much money on the visual and neglecting the audio seems nuts to me. I know when you don't have surround sound you don't think you're missing much. But for me, it felt much like when I watched HD for the first time. I had this "woah" moment.

Anyone else noticed that when you sit this on the stand, screw it in, it sort of naturally tilts back a bit? I'm not talking about the lift and set 6 degree change either... It's a tiny tiny change...but its a tilt back at the top. Very subtle.

I'll have to take a look at my TV when I get home tonight Aquayonex to see if mine has any tilt. Mine came in yesterday and the TV itself is drop dead gorgeous. PQ is top notch and I can't detect any flashlighting or clouding. I haven't done a completely black JPEQ but on some TV shows that were letterboxed, I couldn't see any uneven lighting in the corners.

Unfortunately because of my setup, my apps don't have any sound on the TV. Between my TV and cablebox is an HDMI cable for sound. Between the cablebox and my receiver, there is an optical audio cable for TV audio. So when in the audio settings for my HX820, I selected "Receiver" which completely disables the TV audio. So in my case, I have no audio going from my receiver to my TV so the apps don't have sound. I'll have to double check on what I've all got for connections on my old Onkyo receiver to see if there is a cable I can connect that would go from the TV to the receiver.

That's strange. I have sound and I run all my sound though my Onkyo reciever which has HDMI-ARC.

I have found a clouding spot, but is only visible during 3D viewing. That was the same with my NX810. The 3D cranks the backlight up so much it causes the spot to appear. And slowly over time it becomes more visible. I have just learned to accept it as part of having an edge-lit LED (I have owned 5 from different brands and they all have done it.)

I don't HDMI out/in on my receiver so that HDMI cable going from the TV goes into the Time Warner cablebox. Because of the way I have things setup that HDMI cable only does video. I know my explanation of my audio setup wasn't the most clear so sorry if you misunderstood.

Ahhh, gotcha.

So you run HDMI from the cable box directly to the TV.

You also run optical audio from cable box directly to the AV receiver?

I don't have the model number of my Onkyo receiver but it came out the I think the year right before they started adding HDMI input/output.

Ahhh, makes sense. Onkyo is definitely the brand to get if you're looking for something cheap that has great quality and a ton of options. Just for giggles, I did a little search. You can get a new Onkyo SR309 which has three (all 3D compliant and ARC) HDMI inputs and one output for $200 from Amazon. Or for $30 more you can get the fully networked NR509.

Why don't you just forgo the optical cable from the cable box to the receiver, and move it so it goes from the TV to the receiver. That's how I have my old Onkyo setup with my hx820 right now. Then you'll get audio from both the cablebox (via the HDMI) and the tv's apps. I just mute the TV when using the Onkyo for the surround sound. I don't bother with it usually for regular cable-tv watching. I probably have the same Onkyo, too... I also got it right before they started adding HDMI...

I'm sorry, I do not speak English.I have 55NX810. I see you have a sony 55NX810& 55HX820. Tell me please, say that 55NX810 picture is much worse than 55HX820 because that x-reality has 2 processors. you see something that shows 55N810 very bad compared with 55HX820? thanks

both really... Honestly, the amount of emotional stress involved in having that much money tied up in a broken TV almost broke me. To do it again I would have rather just had a working one and paid full price.

They are both great TVs. But in my opinion, the HX820 is better. The blacks are a little tiny bit darker and I notice a difference in the quaity of 3D. Its much smoother and has no ghosting, which I saw in the NX810 from time to time. But if I was offered a deal on an NX810 today, against paying more for the HX820, I'd get the NX810 for sure. I also prefer the 3D sync transmitter since it allows me to put it where I want vs. the HX820 which has it built in. I am a big gamer so once I put my Xbox Kinect and Playstation Eye down in front of the TV they block the 3D signal which means I have to keep them off to the side a bit which impacts the quality of the games in 3D.

To the guy looking to upgrade his surround receiver, I'd highly recommend checking out the Yamaha line. I have the RX-V667 and it's awesome. You can pick up the RX-V867 for a decent price right now too since it's last year's model.
