I don't use the rovi tv guide. I don't even have cable hooked up to it-- just one HDMI connection from my receiver.
i have, i think 14 or so HOST_WDT logged. Have seen many resets.

Do a manual reset on the TV, look at the Sony 929 thread for IMRizzo's post on directions within the last week or so. People are reporting success after doing it, however, note that you will need to re-enter all your settings after doing the reset.

Mine's been resetting every time I turn it on now. I'm using a Harmony remote though that's setting the input right after it starts up, so that may be why. I'm going to try and just use the Sony remote to turn it on and see if my TV is still resetting.

I also use a Harmony One Remote, that's programmed to set the input right after it turns on. Although I've seen quite a few random restarts over the months, it's nowhere near every time I turn it on.

It's interesting that you are seeing it quite so often. That definitely seems different than what most other people have been reporting, just seeing it fairly rarely.

Mine usually resets about 30seconds to 2 minutes after I turn it on. Usually not right away. Hmmm, you may be experiencing something different.

Well, I did the reset mentioned, and I also am now just using the Sony remote to turn the TV on. And I haven't experienced the reset since. So it's either not using the Harmony remote or the reset that's "fixed" this problem. But yeah, it was resetting every single time I turned the TV on beforehand. BUT it's not right away, it's between the 30 sec to 5 minutes window.

@madsony u need not go to all the trouble... thanks,all the same,i wont ever have 2 use the i-manual again.biggrin.gif;) still loving this set after 8wks with no obvious faults: v. little flashlighting/clouding,no creases,just great contrast! also ive noticed the backlight on this hx820 is a good bit tighter than on the hx800. Far less light intrusion...

Hi all. I'm in the process of researching different models of Sony TV's to send to Sony's Exchange Dept. I have the 55HX800 that is in need of a repair and Sony is willing to exchange the set if I go for the price(s) they quote. The HX820 is one of the models I'm interested in, along with the HX929, HX850, and the NX720. I went through a couple of pages in the forum but not all 83 pages. In general, how is the 820? How does it compare to the other models? TIA

The 820 is nearly flawless in my opinion. There is a 'random restart' issue, where the TV (usually rarely) will restart and will be off for about 5 seconds. It only happens pretty rarely, sometimes maybe once in a few weeks, although I did see it happen two days in a row once. I'm hopeful that it'll be fixed via a firmware update (sooner than later).

It'll be a huge improvement over your HX800, which was the original monolithic model; I bought a NX700 two years ago, and it had a whole bunch of minor issues, and the viewing angle was absurdly bad; I ended up returning it.

The HX820 on the other hand actually has very impressive viewing angles.

Dolby 5.1 Optical Output with HDMI Input

I have setup ,my old receiver ( No HDMI input) with the HX820 using the optical out of the TV
The receiver receives 5.1 input when used with TV channels using the optical cable.
But with DVD connected to the TV using HDMI , i dont get 5.1 output in optical. I tried both the 'TV & external speaker' options of audio on the TV.
I don't see any setting on my LG Blue ray player for 5.1 output using HDMI.

Am i missing something ?

It's because you need an HDMI input on a new receiver. Your TV only has 2 channel sound so HDMI into your TV will be 2.0. Time to upgrade your receiver. eek.gif I may be wrong but I don't think there's a work-around.

Well the TV does output 5.1 in optical out , when used with cable channels. The issue is only with the HDMI DVD input to TV . This is more like a bug then a design .
If i do what you mention , then every time in switch between TV cable channels and HDMI input , i have to switch the input in the receiver as well.

another great thing about sony tvs besides the menus and the set itself is the WIDE modes.

This Problem in solved.
I changed the setting in the DVD player from PCM to Pass though.
Now when i switch the speakers to Audio Speakers, I get Dolby Digital.

hope i am not too late. but i would go with the hx929. HX820 is a great tv by itself...but still it's the SECOND best sony has to offer after hx929. 929 one has best picture quality in the market for its price range and it easily rivals other tvs that are twice the price.

Thanks for the suggestion but you are a day late. It wouldn't of mattered anyway. Sony wouldn't let me choose the HX929 since the TV I am exchanging isn't an XBR model, at least that was their reasoning for not offering it to me. I went with the 55HX850, which is a step under the 929. They also offered me the 750 but I wanted to go with the best I could get.

I just noticed a new firmware update came out (I have updates set to manual). According to Sony the update came out about four weeks ago (5/22)

I wonder if this update may fix the 'random restart' issue. The update does say "Improved performance and stability of the Internet features", but the random restarts don't only happen when using the Internet features, so we'll see...

Anyone already have this update applied for a few weeks and see the random restarts go away? Or can anyone confirm the update didn't fix it? I guess we'll know soon enough.

It doesn't seem to fix the reboot issue, at least not on my set. I actually wrote about it back in 5/23, post#2428. Have you contact SONY about the issue? I have been calling them about it for the last few weeks...the entire process was a nightmare.

I have a Sony HX820 model. While moving the tv the connecter attached to the TV (which connects the CAT5 cable from the cable box to the tv) came off the tv socket. Is there anyway that we can fix it to the socket by ourselves? The tv is only few months old yet sony refuses to fix this issue although its under warranty. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I've had my replacement 820 since earlier this year (my original bought in summer of last year went bad right after Christmas frown.gif). I've read about the "random restart" issue for a while now and have not experienced it. Sure enough it finally sought me out. I've had instances of it this week and last.

I also installed the new firmware update a few days ago. No luck for me folks either. Last night the damn thing restarted two or three times. I was close to unplugging it. mad.gif That's what happens when you continue to build in more and more software. Just more possibilities for this kind of nonsense to occur. I think it is a software issue but I could be wrong.

It's been some time since I read the posts about this problem. If anyone has a quick fix or such please reiterate for the unlucky.

I have a similar TV, the 55HX729, and experienced lately some restart issues. Had the set 6 months. A Sony product specialist (2nd tier via Sarah Kepler @Sony Listens) that right after a firmware update, the TV may turn on and off to free up resources. It may also happen if commands are done too soon on a remote during boot up of the TV. Also, a third reason could be a temporary network conflict within a WIFI set-up.

I get 4 red flashes. Looked it up and it is a problem with the backlight or some board. Calling Frys since I got their PSC warranty.

If I reset it (up arrow + power), I get image for 2 seconds, then shuts off and on goes the red flashes.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the update last week.

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone knows about custom firmware for 46hx820. it seems that there's already information about rooting bravia tv and also sony post the source code for bravia tvs (including hx820).

Hopefully there's a community out there that exploring said information. imagine xbmc on our sets or other feature that can be done such as hdd recording, multiple cameras and so on.... smile.gifbiggrin.gif

Well, I think there have been at least 4 or 5 FW updates and none have addressed the reset issue for me.

Thanks for the info. I'm using a harmony remote and wondering if it's the speed of the commands coupled with the ARC communication with my receiver. Yesterday, I noticed that when I turned the tv it was quiet. So I started increasing the volume while the ARC banner was still up . It took a few increments, but then became unresponsive for about 10 seconds, and then reset. this was all withing the first minute of turning on the tv.
