2011 LG XXPV450 and 400 Owner's Thread - Page 20

that i don't know. i just looked at the date on mine and its feb 2011.

i've just been running the break in disk i downloaded that goes thru solid colors, haven't really watched much of anything. watched the opening of dark knight. looked amazing. watched the underground chase, a tad onthe dark side but still a vast improvement from my old lcd. once i start tweaking settings i think i'll be very happy

I received my 60pv250 from Dell last week and my panel date is Sep 2011. Everything looks great on it so far with none of the brighness fluctuations or panel uniformity issues mentioned earlier in this thread. Black levels are not bad but I plan on doing the pot adjustments in the near future.

I just got got this TV today....and wow!! for what I paid I am more than ecstatic!! I thought the picture was a little dim at first. Had it on ESPN and found Cinema setting looked best just to start. I had been doing research before I purchased and found this forum as well as the tip of using Black Noirs settings combined with a little tweak w/ picture wizard and I am pretty impressed. Especially when I popped Dark Night in my PS3. My cable is at 720, and the jump to 1080p on this setting is pretty breathtaking. I can't wait to play some COD and revisit zombies on this thing. Even picked up the Batman video game and can't wait. If I could have afforded 2 I would have gotten them no question....especially after I heard about that Dell gift card trick applied to the coupon code. $699 is crazy! I don't even care I paid $ more after watching this for about 3 hours.

There is a USB port, but it is for "service only", meaning you cannot load pictures or videos onto a USB key and plug it into the TV to view. In fact, if all goes as I hope, the USB port will remain completely useless for me.

Let me know if you do the pot adjustment and if you can post some pictures of it that would be awesome. I know this has been done by jukebox for the 450, and I assume the 250 is the same, but just to help clarify some of the pot adjustment questions many have asked about in this thread.

I also received this set recently and mine has the same Sept 2011 panel date yours has. I have only watched two movies, neither which have really exploited this sets capabilities, but have noticed no fluctuations, aside from the power saving setting ones, but once they are turned off it's good. I'm still running break in slides. Started with Evan's 20 slide set, but now have moved on to a 120 slide set from another AVS thread.

BN, lifesun, jukebox, and sarge, I have to commend all of you for supplying so much information in this thread. Your recommendations and information has been nothing but helpful. Thank you!!

If anyone can figure out how to get the 250's "service only" USB to be usable that would be awesome. I read about getting into it through the earlier posts, harmony remote, etc, but was not sure if this allowed you to unlock it so it could be used as a regular USB port for pictures, music, etc. If anyone has more information that has done this and revealed new and exciting news, please share. Thank you all again!! I'm going to go back to lurking.

I just got the pv250 delivered from best buy last night and I'm kinda scared to open it now with hearing some of the issues. Best buy has it listed as a new! tv so how new is it? Does it have optical audio? How many hdmi ports? Best buy says 2, some people on here say 3. Almost feel like paid too much also $1299 as some have said they paid $699 or so.

im still in the burning in phase of my 450, but i am VERY happy with this tv. watched some bits and pieces of dark knight and star wars episode 1 (pod race) and 3 (opening space battle) and things look amazing. so much detail and smoothness. i was blown away.

my nephew is over and played some skyrim on his xbox 360, also looking pretty sweet but i've limited how much black bars and huds i've let on the tv. if i switch over to my computer and leave the main screen up too long i do notice a little after image of the desktop so im doing very little of anything except true 16x9 stuff.

Posted a couple days ago not to long after setting my 60PV250 up. I was impressed then, especially after going from 720p to 1080p when I popped in Dark Knight on my PS3 to test it out. For some reason my cable HD receiver reset to 720 and I realized it the next day. After I switched it back my worries have disappeared. To the guy a couple posts ago who paid over a K to get this set. Take it back now and find it online through Dell and use the discount code on woot.com if the deal is still going. It was supposed to end the 31st. Got mine for a hundred less than you stated, but if you use the dell giftcard trick mentioned on a thread here you can get it for the price you mentioned.
I watched the UFC fight, some Blue Planet on Discovery, and then put on some COD and Arkam City. WOW! I was impressed all around, and didn't need to really tweak my settings at all between the 3. I had some issues with Black Noir's settings combined with the Picture Wizard at first, but after I fixed the HD output from my receiver I am more than pleased. I'm not even really considering the tweak mentioned by jukebox and sarge because I'm so happy with the PQ I'm seeing......but curious about doing it none the less.

got it for $100 more than you stated.....my bad.

that is not a good deal at all, you can get the pz550 for 300 cheaper at amazon
post #586 of 844
From what I've found this is the same model as the 450, without maybe a USB port. My 250 has 3 HDMI ports, and no USB post EXCEPT for a service only one. Two HDMI in back, and one on side. I'm very much liking my set, but I don't think I would have paid that $1500. You gotta find the coupon code to get it down on Dell's site, or at least that's what I had to do. I found my coupon code on Woot.com (spelling). A coworker knew I was trying to get a TV. He uses that site quite a bit and told me he had come across it. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Everything I've watched/played looks great! I really haven't noticed the issues people have mentioned on here at all. I love the PQ, and from what I've read hopefully it gets even better once it's broken in. I have a PS3, decent stereo, and no interest in 3D, so this works perfect.
I really am curious about this pot tweak mentioned. Is it that much of a difference. I'm pretty happy about my PQ now, so wondering if I should even bother. I'm probably at about 20-30 into this set.

Congratulations on the purchase. It's going to look awesome over that corner fireplace. I have the 250 and can confirm it's 3 HDMI and 0 USB except for the "service only" USB.

In regards to Break In Slides, they are different colored slides to evenly age the pixels of your plasma. They do not come with the TV, they are downloaded or purchased. If you use them, when using them you need the whole screen to be filled with the image or the pixels will not age evenly and you'll be susceptible to IR, so you'll more than likely have to be set to zoom on the TVs ratio. The recommendation for a break in period is 100 to 200 hours. I don't want to go to much into the details. I tried to post links below, but AVS does not allow people without 3 or more posts to insert links, which I understand... Damn spammers. Try to read up on them though.

Next I'll reference a quote from D-Nice "*****Note: This procedure is designed to equally and evenly age all pixels and ensure the reference settings listed below provide maximum satisfaction. This procedure is NOT designed nor recommended to be used as Image Retention and/or Burn-in prevention.*****"

The brightness and contrast settings are really up to the user and I think it's best put in Evangelo2's thread, which I tried to link below, but again could not, maybe someone else can link it for you. It basically states that brightness and contrast should be down (around 50) in case something comes up on the screen while running the slides (example: antivirus software if you're running slides from your computer) to reduce IR, but can be raised if you're around and keeping a watchful eye on the screen. It's my impression that tweaking these settings higher can help age the pixels faster.

For other setting, there are some listed earlier by blacknoir and lifesun that may be helpful for viewing purposes. These are just suggestions, it's up to what looks best to you. I personally enjoy them.

The most popular slides going around are evangelos which I tried to link, but can't. This is a 20 slides RGBGscale. There is one other one out there that I found that is 120 slides. I'm not sure why it lost popularity, maybe someone can tell me, but it's around and it's the one I'm currently using. That's RGB and everything else, purple, pink, yellow, orange, etc. with black slides to offer breaks to the phosphors.

Hopefully someone else can help out with some links.

Have fun with it!!

i downloaded the dvd files from the master burn in/ir/break in thread in the main plasma flat panel display thread. it downloads a ts folder you can burn to a disk and it goes thru a 40 min loop of changing colors. i've been running it when im not doing anything else.

here is what i d/l'd

you should be able to right click and save that.

Houston we have a problem!!!! Damn cheetah full motion mount I bought off amazon only extends 19.1 inches which is about 3 inches to short for me to center this beast! Found another on amazon that extends 25 inches, gotta order that now. I made sure i left 3 1/2 iches from the bottom of the tv to the shelf on the mantel for a lg sound bar that i may try to sneak in the back door from the wife pretty soon! Lol Thanks for in the info on the slides, I'll look into it. So if. Add noir's setting after I do that then do I do the picture wizard?

i ran the dvd a few times before i did noir's settings and ran the wizard, mainly just because it took me a day and a half, 2 days before i could sit down and really play with it, after that i just run it when im doing something else, like eating, or showering or something, or in here on the computer.

i went and bought aliens tonight since i knew it was 1.85 so i'd have no black bars and watched it. very impresssive. i'm loving having a 60" in my room and i only sit around 7' away from the screen if that, maybe more like 5.5' maybe. almost feels like being at a imax

I'm actually blown away by this picture....it's insane! If I watch mostly hd programs all the time should I still do all the break in type stuff such as slides? I've only cut energy saver off and using 16.9 in cinema mode and feel its great now

Set picture configuration outta the box with Black noirs settings, PW, and some tweaking. I've just stuck with HD programming and been mindful of anything static on the screen or black bars. If I'm away I make sure to put it on HBO or a station that will fill the screen in HD without a static logo for to long. I play a decent amount of games and I'm really enjoying the difference from the LCD. Seems smoother and I'm noticing not much lag. What I would see happen and what was showing on another players kill cam were way off timewise. Pretty happy. I would like to see a little more brightness sometimes, but don't want to sacrifice washing out the picture and losing depth. My blacks are fine so wondering if tweak of pots will help with brightness a little.

im wondering the same thing will the pots tweak help with brightness? I really like the picture especially when watching movies but some shows and games are alittle dark.

My sons watching spiderman 2 non blu ray, anyway to make it play thoughout the whole screen via ps3? I've tried the tv remote and put it on zoom, 16.9 and the others but no luck using the 60pv250 by the way

Follow up to my post about a service call for my November 2011 dated 60PV450. The local service company was very professional, did everything they said they would and when they said. The tech brought out a new(read refurb) main board (the controller board with all the connections on the back). He said LG has had a few of these calls and this board had the latest software.

He doesn't understand why LG doesn't just let you update the TV from USB, but he swapped out the board in about 10 mins. The most time was screws out and back in.

So far, it is much improved. The recorded material I had flicker with is 95% eliminated. Where it would "hunt" for a color before, it just shifts and stays there now. For what I paid for this, I think I'm keeping it now. Wish I could give more info about the firmware version, etc, but LG doesn't really make the info available.

Got my 60pv450 a couple weeks ago. So far, very happy with it.

-No lag playing Halo: Anniversary.
-No burn-in/IR issues at all.
-On an all white screen, I do notice a slight "shadow"-type line right down the middle of the screen. (Not a big distraction; will continue to run the moving mini-color squares to hopefully fix it.)
-Using tweaked "Cinema" & "Game" picture modes and really like them so far.
-No motion-smoothing problem.
-There is glare, expected; but hoping that tilting it, when I get the wall mount, will help a little.
-Was hoping to play videos from the USB but it looks like that's not available on the pv450.

-The only question I have is; does the optical out support 5.1 or DTS? From what I can tell, it doesn't, but I wanted to double check.

Again, very happy with this <$1000 60inch plasma.

I've adjusted the color and tint using a blue filter and test signal, but solid reds are much too saturated even though the color level is overall correct. For example, a guy wearing a black suit with red shirt underneath, the red shirt is just oozing red... not natural... but all other color balances look normal. Which color setting specifically should I tweak if I want to desaturate just solid reds?

Also, a note on the fluctuating white level. I've noticed it occurs under the following condition: When the majority of the scene is white or bright, and there is movement in the scene. It seems as if the TV is constantly trying to adjust the white level as the motion pans in bright scenes, but as soon as the motion stops, the whites no longer fluctuate, even on an almost white screen. I know a couple years ago, the good ol' federal gov began requiring plasma TV's to consume much less power, and from looking at the specs, they do indeed. I suspeect this is just LG's poor attempt to comply with the government mandate. So, blame the gov, but also blame LG for a particularly poor implementation. This is my fourth plasma TV (Panasonic and LG) and next time I will be going with an LCD. All the problems I've had with plasmas never seem to be an issue with the LCD's.
