Bookshelf speakers

The other day I listened to a pair of PSB Alpha B1 Bookshelfs, Paradigm something awfuls and a pair of Totem Mite bookshelf speakers.

The setup in the store was decent but I have to say that the speakers didn't exactly blow my mind. I'm not sure what the source material was (CD-R with something burned on it) but the speakers really didn't blow my mind. Or even tickle me much at all.

The Totems were the better of the three and I'm sure with a few tweaks to the setup would have been even better.

I also listened to a pair of Tannoy Revolution DC4. They have the tweeter mounted inside the midrange driver. The sound was much better from the Tannoy. Again I think the room was a bit noisy with other TV's on in the store.

Is it just me or are bookshelf speakers just a little uninspiring these days? They just didn't seem to have the detail and clarity that I would have thought modern speakers would have in spaces. Would something from NHT be better than what I heard?

My little Mission speakers are either quite good or they're crap and I'm so used to them that everything that sounds different sound off.

A good speaker is a good speaker regardless if it was made in 1965, or yesterday...

Depending on the Mission you have, they are good to great.

It will depend on the design/engineering, and needs to be properly
set up. I use mostly bookshelf speakers - the definition, detail and
depth are good from my speakers. Sometimes it is hard to adjust,
when you are use to a certain sound.

Check out the new PSB Imagine Mini's. Paul Barton has hit a homerun w/this model. Don't let the size fool you, they give off a rather soundstage.

I had a chance to listen the the NHT line awile back in which it was quite good but to me the Canton set they had next to it had more of a better sound/feel as it was more "open" per say. If you have a chance to listen to the Canton line I would suggest doing so.

The source most likely had some negative effects on your listening session. The souce is the most important link in the chain. Speakers can't be judged effectively unless the source is providing true sound. All three speakers you mentioned are good speakers, but good sound is all about personal preference. So what did the speakers lack that made you unhappy with them?
