Problem with Sony NX810 and Onkyo HT-R690 - No sound ARC enabled

I am new to the AVS forum and really did not know where to put this post. I recently purchased a Sony NX810 tv along with a home theater system that came with an Onkyo HT-R690 receiver. My issue is with sending sound from the TV to the surround sound. I am new to the home theater world but have learned a little bit from browsing the forums. I absolutely hate the manuals that came with my TV and home theater system. They are not too in depth. I have enabled ARC on my Onkyo and have connected a monster 1000 speed hdmi cable from the HDMI out of the receiver to the HDMI 1 of the Sony TV. HDMI 1 on my TV supports ARC. When I turn the TV on, the receiver turns on also and the TV displays a message stating it is using the external audio speakers. There is no sound coming out of the external speakers. There is not many settings to really change on the receiver or the TV. Any other suggestions for troubleshooting or am I missing something?

No ideas????

On my panasonic plasma, I had to set the audio as "theater" to enable sound to the receiver. My receiver is a Sony.
Maybe something along those lines.

Dors the AVR support ARC? If so, there should be a setting to enable it

And if you finally get tired of figuring it out, you can always connect an optical cable from the TV to the receiver for audio. Since you're not passing HD audio from the TV you're not really gaining any benefit except saving yourself one cable.

And buy your cables at monoprice.com next time. Unless they threw in that Monster 1000 hdmi cable you paid too much.

The cable was discounted about 80%. I would never pay for the price they want for these cables. I could buy an optical cable but I hate when things dont work the way they should.

Does anyone have ARC working with the HT-R690 receiver?

You must have both ARC and HDMI-CEC enabled on the both TV and the AVR. The HDMI input on the TV to which you cable must be ARC capable (some ARC capable TVs limit ARC capability to only one specific HDMI input port).

I have HDMI port 1 on the TV plugged into the receiver. This port is ARC capable as well as the HDMI OUT port on the receiver. I will try to find out if I can find out where to enable HDMI-CEC.
