First reviews are in and it's looking good. Reputable reviewers are getting early looks, not just the fan-boy sites, so that's a good sign.

I will still wait for it on blu

The IMAX 3D trailers I saw before Prometheus were impressive (from a 3D POV).

Also, the CGI looks 10x better and there are more practical stunts than in all 3 original films combined.

And of course, it makes sense financially as Sony wants to hold on to the rights to Spidey for as long as possible...

I personally thought McGuire made for a decent Spidey but Dunst I thought was terrible. Felt the same way about the actress in Batman Begins, which escapes me now. I'm also not thrilled about the reboot as for one, I felt it was way too soon and two, I'm tired of getting recycled concepts as well. I posted elsewhere the I felt like Hollywood is getting over by doing so. I include many of the tv shows now becoming movies in this category as well. Having said all of that, I'm intrigued by this movie if only by the imagery. It has a very comic feel to me, which could be pretty cool. The first McGuire Spidey I thought was good but the following two were movies I don't feel compelled to add to my library (though i don't have the first one either) nor do I get excited if I see them coming on TNT or something. Because of my kids I'll probably go see it but I'm not sure if I'll go 2D or IMAX 3D. Even after my Avengers experience I'm not a over the top IMAX 3D fan but something about Spiderman just screams 3D. We'll see come next week.

And for those picking on Transformers 2, Lethal Weapon 3, Temple of Doom, Rocky V and most of all Star Wars prequels....you don't respect the classics man! tongue.gif

Katie Holmes smile.gif

...I thought she looked a bit young but honestly I didn't mind her. For the sake of continuity I would have liked to see her back in The Dark Knight although Maggie Gyllenhal (I'll never know how to spell that name!) did a fine job.

I've already reviewed it (click on the link in my signature(no spoilers)) and I thought it was great, but not brilliant. In the end, I like this reboot more than any of the original trilogy. Andrew and Emma were fantastic!

Count me in as one of the early nayer's and detractors but after seeing the latest trailer I've changed my mind and wouldn't mind seeing it at some point when it's released on dvd. Main reason is that although Tobey is technically a better actor than andrew Garfield, I just never bought Tobey as spiderman. He was just too much of a dweeb and peter paker that I grew up in the comic books wasn't remotely nothing like his portrayal. At least Andrew did a better job in getting peter parker IMO.

I also like the way they updated the way he shoots his webs, it's more real and convincing. 2nd I like the lizard as the nemesis and so far the direction what I saw in the trailer looks not too shabby so this might be a sleeper and one of the summer blockbuster that doesn't disappoint.

I hope that means Peter invents mechanical web-shooters, as god and Stan Lee intended.

From CNN (Entertainment Weekly) for those who haven't read it yet. In general, kind of keeping it upper mid tier. IMO, really sounds like the reboot came a little too soon but not exactly a waste to go see.

There is also a review on msnbc that focuses more on the romantic pairing in a very favorable way than anything else about the movie, which is intersting.

The movie critic for our local fishwrap (Larry Toppman) gave it 3 1/2 stars. He's a good one, too - perceptive, good writer, and I always respect his opinion. Good sign.

How do you beat the heat on 4th of July eve? Go see Spidey in an air conditioned IMAX. Bam!

Harry from AICN likes TASP quite a bit and this is what he had to say that confirms my hunch on peter parker's portrayal:

Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker & Spider-Man, for me, are far far far closer to what Peter Parker and Spider-Man have always been in my mind. Changing Peter’s origin story worked with the familiar elements – but rewriting Uncle Ben’s immortal lines, it’s like doing Hamlet without TO BE OR NOT TO BE… there’s some things that certain characters must say, talking around the better line only makes you want to cue the actor from your seat.

I give this movie a solid 3/5. This is the sensitive, emo Spidey. The first hour had a bit too much brooding (thanks Twilight), but it eventually picked up. Denis Leary was himself as the surly police Captain. But paled in comparison to JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. I do prefer Garfield as Peter Parker over Tobey's. I'm still not convinced we needed a complete reboot of this. We all know Parker gets bitten by a spider and Uncle Ben dies. Unless you're seeing this at an IMAX, the 3D is unnecessary. However, the final shot in 3D is pretty badass. It was a decent romp, but nowhere near as fun as The Avengers.

Thanx for that.
I'm still debating whether to buy a ticket...

Oh, since today is July 4...... remember: M-80s and alcohol don't mix...............(except on July 4).

I just got back and can say that Waboman is dead on with his insights, although I haven't seen The Avengers. I too liked this Parker better than Tobey's. I was not happy with the amount of trailers for more sophisticated movies for older teens and adults. The only real family friendly trailer was for Frankenweenie. The first one, with the police, should not have been shown with Spidey! It's from the makers of Training Day and is awful looking to me. I did like the Dark Knight Rises trailer along with the upcoming Resident Evil, although RE is still not in line with the audience watching Spiderman.

We only had one trailer play before the film started. They showed TDKR and then BAM! right into the film.

This new Spidey has my favorite Stan Lee cameo.wink.gif
post #84 of 142
There were 4-6 people clapping when the Stan Lee cameo appeared. The rest of us, myself included, were mentioning it to others who may have been in the dark. It too is my favorite one.

I'd like to know from others about what trailers they saw. Here's my list:

1.End of Watch
2. Dark Knight Rises
3. The Watch
4. Skyfall
5. Frankenweenie
6. Resident Evil: Retribution

I mostly agree with Waboman's assessment but would rate it slightly higher at 3.5/5. Garfield is definitely the Peter Parker envisioned in the Marvel comics plus this version is closer to the original Amazing Spider Man stories ie Gwen Stacey as his first love interest, the wise cracking that was conspicuosly absent in the previous version and other points in the movie. The whole Peter's parents thing is a new tangent that was never touched on in the comics however. In the chronology of Spider Man, Jonah Jameson will probably appear in the sequel.
Visuals were impressive but on 2d didn't look dramatically different from 2002 Spiderman (IMAX was sold out:mad:)
Avengers was definitely better but I would recommend Amazing Spiderman if you can see it in 3D.

Glad I'm not alone in hating Raimi's "biological" take on Pete's web slingling abilities. Besides, shouldn't have Tobey McGuire's webbing shot from his ass...you know...LIKE A SPIDER?

But I know I get the blashphemy tag when I say I hated The Sam Raimi Spidey flicks. For me, the reboot should have occured in 2003, not 2012.

What does that mean?

You can argue that 3d is not necessary for any 3d movie. In most cases 3d is an option and I would think that by now most people would be able to make up thier own mind as which they prefer (3d or 2d). Its simple. Instead we get people who hate it and try to get others to hate it as well. (not implying that you are). Why can't people just express their opinions good or bad without having to say that 3d must die or 3d must stay. It's much better when we have options and that's what we have at the moment. If you like 3d (good) if you hate 3d (good) just don't say that one should go and one should stay.

I hope they bring back JK Simmons, it would be impossible to do a better J. Jonah Jameson than he did.
