Anyone have a good source for lamps for AVR's/Amps?

Trying to replace some VU meter lamps in an old amp and not having much success in my search. Been to RS, auto parts stores, several on-line sources..and the only one that even comes close (not the same value bulbs) want twice the cost of 3 stinking bulbs to ship! ($3 for the lamps, $6 to ship!)

Anyway, I need E10 12v 0.5mA lamps (6w screw-in type, 3/8's glass dia). I would actually like to find colored LEDs of this type for a modification, but I'll settle for regular if I have to. I know they're out there, but having no luck finding. I even talked with the owner of one of the on-line bulb sites, and he couldn't locate the same one either.

Any ideas? Sites to try?

Thanks.

i feel your pain... i've been (very slowly) working on a couple of jukebox projects, and little bulbs can be hard to find (and expensive)...

search around and see if you can find any pinball machine repair guys in your area... the guy who sold me mine seemed to be able to lay his hands on to just about any bulb that exists... they also might be able to help out with the led conversion, as a lot of people have switched old school machines from incandescent to led bulbs...

good luck... i know it's a pita to find stuff like this...

Interesting. That's got to require some patience!

I have no problem paying the price, as long as it's the right bulb. I might just go with the $9 deal for 3, even with outrageous shipping (lol, I'd be happier if they just charged me more for the bulbs and made S&H reasonable ), but those aren't the exact spec size. And yeah, I'd really like to try the LED version and try to get one in Mac/Marantz blue. I know when I restored a 69' Z/28 a few years back, I went with some aftermarket gauges that had bulbs with "rubber" caps that fit over a regular bulb (red or green), so I suspect this is a possibility of something I might find.

I will also check with my local electronics repair guy. I'm only a full day into searching, but man, I spent about 3hrs on this yesterday, and I'm usually much more successful being resourceful in such a time frame. I'll see what I can find today...a new day .

You might want to search for 500mA (or 0.5A) bulbs instead. Looking for 10mm (or 10x28, 10x27, 10x23) instead of 3/8" might also help. You can also settle for a lamp with a lower amperage/wattage, it'll just be that much dimmer.

LED lamps that fit your voltage and mechanical specifications don't seem to be too hard to find.

I don't know why you're complaining about $6 shipping. It seems perfectly reasonable to me. It has nothing with the cost of the bulbs, but how much it costs for the company to actually package and ship you them. These guys aren't Amazon.

Ross, those links are exactly what I was unable to find yesterday. Awesome, thank you very much! (and yes, technically challenged here, so I didn't know how else to really search. I did know about accepting higher voltage rated and/or lower wattage bulbs, but....)

First, of all, I'm a cheap bastard . But I also ship things quit often, and I'm aware of "what things cost". In the case of 3 of these small bulbs (the ones I had found were $1.35ea), we both know they can be shipped in a protective envelope for less than $1, including the cost of the envelope! Like I said, raise the price on the bulb, but I don't want to be obviously gouged for shipping charges. And in case you didn't know, many businesses actually use shipping to add to their profit margin, intentionally. And in that case, it's absolutely a bogus way to do business.

I'll give you another example; just yesterday, I ordered $80 worth of 3pin cables/connectors and temp controller for multiple cabinet fans. The site that sold this company's products (Aerocooler) wanted $34 for shipping this stuff, which couldn't weigh all of 3lbs! Knowing it was outrageous and a case of gouging like I just mentioned, I called the company direct in CA. Guess what? They agreed that the shipping charges were bogus... and they just shipped me the entire order direct for $15 shipping .

Again, I ship things often, and UPS and FeEx should have cots at my home, lol. I can usually ship say, an EQ from Atlanta to the west coast via UPS for less than $18. We're talking about an ~8-10lb pkg. $6 for three miniature bulbs that don't even weigh 1/4lb? Puh-leeeeeze!

But seriously, thank you very, very much! You just made my day with those links!

They have the same $6 shipping, but if you haven't found this site yet, they carry a huge selection of bulbs:

http://www.donsbulbs.com

They will also hunt down anything they don't have (at something like $20 per type of bulb). Not cheap, but if you need something discontinued or unusual, can be worth it.

Thanks, but I went ahead and ordered from one of the links RR provided. $4 shipping, and they're coming from Asia . In the scheme of things, that's a huge price difference in terms of shipping from $6. Like I said, charge $100 for your bulbs if you want, just don't gouge me with bogus hidden fees in shipping. If you have to add the actual ship cost into your product, by all means, do so. That's legit. Doing it the other way around is a gimmick, and one that I'm sure many have run into on the net; "Oh, look, here's those "XXX" at half price than anywhere else....oh, but shipping cost $10,000" . It's insulting. And many businesses do it so they pop up in "cost" searches. Look at places like Nextag and Bizrate...they usually show actual total cost, which s the way to price shop. But enough.... I will keep your link for future reference too. I'm happy . Thanks again!

Cool - glad you found them!

I know what you mean about the shipping fees. I'm even more critical since I signed up for Amazon Prime, where an annual flat fee covers all orders which are then sent via 2 day express. Of course, who knows how many times over I've respent the savings by ordering things I probably wouldn't have w/o the "free" shipping

Amazon Prime is cool....and I've taken advantage of it a few times, just because it was offered for 30 day trial, free. And frankly, if I ordered stuff constantly (which it seems like I do, but in reality...not so much ), Prime is a great deal! But here's a tip for some that may not know: make a point to choose products (same product often sold by various vendors on Amazon) that are "eligible for free shipping" ($25 and above), and those products will ship to you damn near as fast as they would if you had chosen to pay UPS Grd! I actually believe that they try to hold the shipment back a day or so before shipping it, but that it gets shipped ASAP anyway, just because they want to move forward and not have any backlog in their shipping dept. They would also like to properly promote paying for "dated" shipping, but their own driven spirit to keep ahead of schedule makes them nix this almost every time! IOW, it's a PITA for them to intentionally hold your order back. I've ordered enough from Amazon to know what I'm talking about, and using the free ship is like choosing 3-5 day UPS in most cases. Again, the "avg" person wouldn't know this, and ends up paying for shipping so they "won't have to wait", lol. But enough.....
