Wow, that looks pretty intense. How big is that room? Do you have a wider shot? The Phils look excellent!

It looks like Dennis has changed the pads between the two modules again. It looks like they are two rectangular pads made with 3 thinner layers of 1/2" thick felt?

Congrats on the new speaks, fellas - so awesome!

I gave up on the Black Hole, even though it did a good job of damping vibrations. The RAAL was just too heavy to keep the upper cabinet perfectly level. So I switched to Sorbothane feet (which are even more expensive). Unfortunately, I couldn't find any taller than 1", and that wasn't enough to reach down to the bottom of the cavity on the top of the woofer cabinets. I rummaged around until I found a bunch of left-over carpeting, which is very easy to cut with a straight edge, and provides additional vibration damping. The sorbothane rests on the carpet, which isn't nearly as visible as it looks in the picture--that's the flash picking it up. You honestly can't feel cannon shots when you put your hands on the upper cabinets.

Very impressive Dennis- always improving things and providing great service. Thanks for what you do!

Lol They sound AWESOME!!! i promised to not copy others impression, but man they sound just totally transparent and the speaker just disapear completely (sorry :P), i'm listening since 1 hour and i think i got up like 30 times getting near center channel or near surround to see if they were working.

Once i realise they're not playing i'm like WTF i could swear they were working... i even unplugged them to be sure. Awesome product and the standard black veneer looks really good. I'm very pleased Dennis, thank you.

Btw, for the one asking for amp, medium-loud sound atm since 1 hour, no heat from my crap AVR. I think AVRs are just way stronger than the makers try to tell us ( probably warranty or legal stuff)

Once i play with them couple of days i'll post pict and a better review

Congratulations on the new speakers for those who just got them.

I imagine that if some of these are being used for the TV setup also, some people will actually start to find there are actually good sounding commercials out there. You may think I am joking but just wait to see.

Have fun with them guys.

I had good intentions of posting my opinion on the Phil. 2 as soon as I received them and I believe I may have been one of the first to get them but then I made the mistake of listening to a cd.Anyway,200 plus cd's later and here are my thoughts on these.
Maybe it is best I didn't post my very first impression of these as there were more than a few expletives used as I hauled them up three flights of stairs.A few advil and a couple beers erased that pain and I set them up.Packaging and instructions were excellent and I was very happy with the black satin finish.
My hope was to have a stereo set up that would be able to avoid using a sub but would also perform well in my HT.That put my focus on the bass these put out.Well the depth, impact, tightness and musicality are all there.By musicality, for example,I mean a bass guitar has tones, dynamics, sustains etc. that distinguish it as an instrument that sounds like it is in the room. The drum beats that are handled by the sb woofer also make it seem like the kit is right in front of you.In fact as an experiment I used the PHIL 2's with my HT preamp with bass crossed at 40 and everything below that going thru bass management into my SVS powered cylinder sub.I compared this set up with the speakers going into a Parasound stereo preamp run full range with no sub.The second set up was better in faithfully producing the bass that was recorded.
The frequencies handled by the BGNeo are distinguished by the best vocal reproduction I have ever heard and any instruments playing in this range sound excellent.I have a personal love of percussion so having the snare drum sound so right is a thrill.
I won't expound on the RAAL except to say that everything said so far in this thread about it is in my opinion correct. To be used in a speaker at this price point is insane but it is a good kind of crazy.
O.K. so let's be honest, anyone can buy these drivers and stick them in a box but the design of the crossovers make all of these work seamlessly and lets them operate within the sweet spot of their frequency range. The result being balanced sound emitted precisely as the recording intended.Great job Dennis.I made an attempt at trying to understand what a transmission line bass cabinet does and how it works but it was over my head. All I know is must be doing something right.
Finally I can not call these a great value because that would imply there are speakers in this price range that compare. The problem with this is there aren't, these are literally a steal.
My one and only problem was with the top cabinet tilting on the pad but I see Dennis has solved this since mine were built so I guess I will try to mimic his solution somehow. So not to end on a negative note I will say thanks again to Dennis for the best pair of full range speakers I have ever owned.

Very nice! But, can they handle high SPL's, above 100-105dbs? Have you really opened them up? Just curious. Please let us know...

mechx,

That was awesome review! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us. I'll get to hear them in roughly a week or so - woohoo!

.

Thanks so much for taking the time to report. It certainly didn't take you as long to write as it did for me to deliver the speakers. You were in fact the first to order the 2's, and you waited patiently while the Chinese factory kept pushing the delivery date further and further back. I'm relieved to hear that you found the wait worthwhile.

To echo some of the new posts:

---I check the center daily - its really not on, but geesh i have such a huge sound in front of me its awesome (in stereo)

---I have reach earbleeding with music and HT, my room is 14x20x9 and completely sealed. At 10ft I can read over 100 with ease.

---I use a 40 crossover on the mains, 60 on the center, all my surrounds are at 80 (for HT)

---If you have never tried full SACD/ 96k hdtracks/ etc you simple have to try it - its made for this speaker.

---the finish is a nice black, not too reflective for my projector
post #1227 of 4200
Dennis, have you posted full specs/measurements and pictures of your Phil 1 center yet?
I'm not looking for information from regular users...more like an official post?

Reading these reviews makes me even more excited about my Phil

Hi I'm going to finish up the orders I have on hand, and that will be it for me. The centers are just too much of a distraction from the Phil's. Jim Salk will be handling future orders for the center--which will come with either the Fountek or the OEM RAAL used in the SoundScapes. The latter is already part of the Salk line, and uses a crossover that I designed. They will feature Jim's superb cabinetry, and they will have to sell for more. A really high quality center just costs a lot to make (there are two fairly expensive woofers and a very complex crossover which is needed to deal with diffraction effects caused by the tweeter's location eqaual-distant from the woofer "tunnels"). I will probably continue to sell the Philharmonitors, but won't post them on my website.
