Honestly, while my palate is more educated than my ears I doubt I would be able to detect a difference. I attribute the heaps of praise Nuance has provided on RAAL for my purchase decision, after reading most of his posts I didn't want anything less.

Hi I've sold exactly 2 Phil 1's, and the second pair isn't finished yet. The first was the prototype that I sold locally. frsimms' friend ended up getting the 2's. The RAAL obviously has more sales appeal, which is just as well since the Fountek ribbons are getting hard to find. If you A- B the 1's with the 2's, the sound stage is a little higher and deeper with the RAALS, and there's a little more air at the very top. If you A-B the 1's with a speaker with a good dome tweeter, the comparison is reversed--the 1's will sound more spacious.

I've been reading Stereophile for years (as a subscriber and off the news stand before that) and John does the measurements to confirm or debunk the subjective reviewers comments. I find it interesting that the Wilsons measurements are iffy yet they garner great reviews. Why would that be?

So Nuance you've been recommending and advertising these speaker in every thread, on every AV forum on the web, and your set haven't even arrived yet? Wheres the integrity? Never-mind I guess it doesn't matter.

Yes, new subs are likely to be a few years for me, but then I am buying Phil 2's, Phil center, surrounds, receiver, display. The most popular tune in our house for awhile is:

"My bologna has a first name, its O-S-C-A-R..."

And your review was very nice too..since they look the same my wife wont know he difference... she is tired of all the 'speaket talk' in the house and my ever increasing budget for my toys haha..

heh. I just sneak mine in. They go into the cave and sit behind an AT screen so my wife never notices. It helps that the room is covered in black velvet so it's very difficult to see anything in there anyway. Once my Phil 2's get here though, I'll have to come up with some excuse b/c I'll have too many spare speakers lying around waiting to get sold.

Good luck obi-wan. My wife has a sixth sense when it comes to audio equipment so now I reverently apply to the 'committee' (star wars reference) for any purchase. Like the magnet states on my fridge 'happy wife, happy life'.

You won't regret that either, I just have to figure out how to connect to network for FLAC streaming from PC! I have downloaded the oShare, but no results yet, but I will keep digging, no worries!

The laptop will be a great audio source! I am going to try a few SACDs from Amazon. These phils will truly shine I am sure.

Oh try grooveshark.com great sound like HD!

I saw an iPhone app that plays flac coded audio. I am thinking with such a player on airplay should work well..I will check out that site you suggested, thanks !

I have an oppo special edition and I prefer the laptop. I never even consider it for 2 channel.

Will the 2s work for now without the sub for HT setup in your opinion ? My room is not huge and i dont care for enormous base. I will add a sub later on but was wondering if anyone has any experience with just these 2 for HT evern without a center channel..I am eyeing the NHT absolute zero or the 2-C center...

For surrounds, Dennis' MB0W1. Receiver will be Denon 4311, will probably pair it with an amp at a later time. My Phils are getting a custom finish and should be ready sometime in early May.

I like both selection and customization of Slacker. I love the quality of MOG streaming (320k MP3) but it's not as versatile as Slacker. And of course Spotify is good for both quality and selection but I dropped the paid subscription.

The easy answers are:

1) Measurements aren't everything. Duh!
2) Your amps aren't powerful enough. Hello? Don't you know you need $10,000 monoblocks to sound good?

The sad thing is, I can't even find a single Wilson Audio speaker with on-axis and off-axis FR that look as good as a pair of $300 Infinity P362.

The same can be said for B&W, Zu Audio, and many other speakers.

But measurements aren't everything, and dang it, didn't I tell you they need 800wpc $20,000 amps to sound their best?

But the reason we are here on this thread is because we believe in speakers that not only sound superb, but measure superbly.

I went to a dealer in Vegas who had $20,000 speakers set up with two $25,000 mono blocks. WTF!

As promised, here are my in-room measurements of the Philharmonic 2's. They are crossed over to the subwoofers at 80Hz fixed (thanks to my preamp), and they have 1/3 octave smoothing applied.

15-200


200-20,000


All measurements were taken from the listening position (about 10.5 feet away), and of the left and right speaker separately; then I averaged the response and captured pics of the bass (20-200) and then the rest of the spectrum (200-20,000). I am tired - time for bed.
