How loud were you guys listening??

I wasn't at the GTG, just commenting in their thread.

I spent an hour today listening to the 2 songs you sent me - Society's Child & Hallelujah - on both Phil3 & Salon2 in 2.1 Stereo.

I think both speakers sounded superb. Ultra detailed sound. Could hear every instruments, every breath, etc. Soundstage was superb. I have my Phil3 ~ 33% filled, but I honestly don't think it would matter even if they were 100% filled. I could be wrong, but that's just my opinion.

I tried to volume matched as close as possible using my SPL meter.

But, I could almost swore I thought the Phil3 sounded a little more detailed. I don't know. Again, it was not blinded and tried to volume match, but I think the Phil3's treble sounded more detailed. Could be wrong.

I may be wrong, but I bet Dennis will find out that there is nothing wrong with the Phil 2’s that were used at the GTG. The main problem will probably be that they were just trying to play the Phils too loud in an overly large room. That is just my guess. Just like there was no problem with the SoundScapes. I don’t think amp clipping was the issue with the Phils though, but it could have been a factor.

You were right, good call man.

We level matched the speakers to 80 dB, but some of the peaks probably hit 90

Wow!! Thanks man! Considering the total play time is around 7 minutes, that's a long time! Much appreciated!!

Does Society's Child make you as mad as it makes me? :P People are so ****** *Rolls eyes*

I've listened to Hallelujah on the Salon 2 at the dealer. It was amazing! The dealer is a REALLY nice guy. I told him I couldn't afford it but I just wanted to listen. He told me any time I wanted to come back to listen I was more than welcome. I stayed 2 hours. He heard Hallelujah playing, came into the room, and said "This is such a good song. I have to hear it on these"; We sat and listened together.

I'm VERY excited to hear it on the Phils! I'm really happy to hear you think they both sound great!! Maybe the dealer will let me bring my Phil 2 over for a comparison! That would be wicked fun!

Thanks again for doing that from me, Bro! I appreciate it greatly!

I'm sure that's part of it. But Nuance had them for a few days before the event, and the midrange just didn't sound right to him. I was under tremendous time pressure to get those shipped because I was called out of town on a family emergency. I barely got a chance to listen to them, and they were half way out into the room because I had just picked up a load of Phil 3 cabinets. And there was damage to at least one of the bass cabinets (which house the crossovers), so who knows. For the record, I demonstrated the Phil's in a huge conference room at last year's Captial Audio Fest (along with the SS10's), and people played them REALLY loud. There were no midrange issues. Of course, we were using a Van Alstine amp, which was up to the job.

I didn't realize you were out here due to a family emergency. I am sorry to hear that DM. I hope is well.

The ht subs are 4 SVS Ultras (crossed at 80hz) and the 2 channel subs with the Phils are 2 SVS PB12 Pluses (crossed at 60hz).

Sweet subs!!

Out of curiosity, why did you cross at 60hz?

The woofers are flat to 32 Hz, so why put the crossover point any higher than you have to? You want to minimize localization of the sound coming from the sub, and also get the sub woofer's breakup modes down as far as possible. But I don't claim to be a HT expert. I can't find any movies I want to watch, and I've got cabinet boxes stacked up in front of my projection screen.

If that is the case, why not cross them at 40hz?

Because a really good sub will have less harmonic distortion at 40 Hz than the Phil's. But you could always try it.

I know it's totally not the best way to tell, but from just the videos posts, which was recorded with the same camera and basically same position, I noticed that that guitar from the the SC 10 had more "wow" factor for me then the Phil 2. I can only imagine what they sounded like in person. The highs seemed good on both though. I would assume the mids should have been broken in for the meet? Curious what your findings will indicate.

Sorry to hear about the emergency, I hope everything worked out for the best.

Dennis retired from the GSA last year. They no longer pay for his wild Detroit parties.

Guys, what is the Title, Artist, & Album of that 1st track on the demo CD with all those drums?

I tagged the other 16 tracks, but can't figure out the 1st track.

EDIT: SoundHound has no idea.

Hello fellas

I asked a few questions on the Philharmonic speakers on audioholics forums and and got great info on them. Browsing online, i came across this forum . I was wondering how the Phil-2s compare to the SongTowers !? I understand they share a common lineage and probably have a lot of common traits. But since they both are around $2K (although Phil-2 have RAALs) , i was wondering what do people who are familair with both these speakers have to say ? Sort of like a head to head comparison. Looks are not a huge factor for me ,
I am looking to make a decision soon and these two are deinately on the top of my list.....

Some more pertinent info
Room size : 15.5 x 28 x 9
Usage : 50 - 50 fot HT and Music
Music Prefernces: Mostly rock (all forms) , occasional instrumental
I am loooking for a 2.1 setup and will pair these with a sub

Would appreciate your inputs on these, Thanks
