Have you considered making a 3-way stand mounted monitor with high quality drivers? I know it may be as expensive as your floorstanding models, but that's ok. No fancy veneers needed, a simple matte black will do, my wife wants something that is not very imposing and can't get over the shape of the Phil 1-3, despite my urging that they are a great bang for the buck.
Something along the lines of the SS M7 or the Selah Tempestra. I'm in no hurry for this project, would probably get 3 for the L/C/R.

Hi I'm not sure a small 3-way would be that much of an improvement over the largest of my 2-way monitors. You certainly wouldn't get more bass, because the midrange chamber would take up any volume you would gain by a taller cabinet. You might gain a little midrange presence, and I could use the RAAL instead of the Fountek because of the higher crossover frequency. But I don't think the sound difference would justify the cost difference, and I already have too many models to deal with--that's why I spun off the center to Jim Salk. If I were to introduce a new model, it would be a reconfigured Philharmonic 2 with a smaller woofer that might possibly be made to work in a single transmission line, or perhaps a 2-segment rather than 3-segment. That would reduce the bass cabinet footprint and make for generally more pleasing proportions.

I'm still trying to figure out my wife's logic preferring the looks of stand-mounted over floorstanding, but I guess that statement alone (wife's logic) is an oxymoron.
What are the current specs and cost for the Philharmonitor 2s?

Hi The prices range from $1,000/pr to $1100/pr depending upon whether you get straight or curved sides. I just finished a pair with straight sides in piano high gloss black, and have attached a pic. They also come in maple and cherry, and have magnetic grills. They use the Seas ER18 reed cone 7" woofer and the Fountek tweet from the Phil 1. Useable bass goes down to 38 Hz.

You mean turn the bass cabinet of the Phil2 into a 3-way monitor? That would be one large monitor. Would be interesting to see.

No--I mean get the bass cabinet narrower and less deep, and then perhaps use a more conventionally shaped upper cabinet, or just one unified cabinet, using a bass unit like the 6.5" Scan Revelator, which works well as in a TL. But I really haven't thought through the details.

Dennis, you have said that you were looking for a speaker that reproduced what you hear when you are playing in the orchestra. I have said that I thought that you have finally succeeded with the Philharmonics. Do you feel that you have found the Grail with the Philharmonics?

I missed the last train for center order . Hope she change her idea... I'm sure the salks center is fantastic but why would i want a salks center when i can get a bigger badboy for 1k!!

Hope youre wife change her idea saeyedoc, if it can convince her,i wasnt finding them appealing on the pictures but when i receives them i've been happily surprised. I'm sure adtg and other fancy veneer phils looks fantastic in real. To conclude, you get used to that shape and you find the other speakers ugly after a few days

My wife likes the Philharmonic speakers too, and even though she would want me to get what I think is best this was important.

I designed my HT furniture to be pieces of art disguised as equipment racks. I chose my speakers for their excellence and their custom finish to transform them into wood sculptures, extending the theme. The end result will be beautiful on all levels.

I think the option of a single unified, lighter, narrower, and less deep cabinet is a great idea.

I prefer the way they look now, but some folks (like some women) will appreciate the more conventional box shape speakers.

I'm sure there's room for improvement. But I do think the open back approach produces a more realistic orchestral sound stage. You can now order blank panels for the back of the upper cabinet of the 3's that will completely seal the rear and convert the speaker into a conventional design if you prefer that for certain program material, like closely miked voices.

Yes, If memory serves, Del charged $50 for making the upper back and staining it, no veneer. If you wanted it veneered the same, or shiny lacquered like some guy we all know (point point \\/ ) then it would be more. A worthwhile experiment I think

No, all of the speakers come with a grill like cover for the back, but no solid backing

The issue with making a solid back for the twos would be that Dennis would have to bring the upper cabinets to Del and he would have to figure something out. I'm sure he could do it, just at extra time and cost.

Dennis will correct me if I'm mistaken on anything I said, but I think thats about right.

That's correct, except that I wouldn't want Del to take on the extra work for the 2's. He's having a hard enough time staying above water as it is. He would have to install male prongs to fit the recepticles in the back of the 2's, and they would probably break off after a few switcharoos anyhhow. The 3's have magnets installed in the back.
