What do you own, Del?

I built my own speakers a while back. Here's a pic of them. Two 12" Swan woofers, an Audax PR170 and a GR-Research tweeter per side. Piano black with a round back which may not show on in the picture.

You should post some of the enclosures you have done, or can I?

Go ahead and post some pictures. I've forgotten what pics you have.

I would love to see some pics!!

Okay Monkish54. Let's see if I can attach two pics to this post. If not, I'll follow with another post. These are two pair that I'm currently in the process of doing the final voicing on for two friends.

They play quite loud, but they stay clean. They stand about 50" tall.
Don't think there are any Philharmonic speakers in my future. I own many pair vicariously through Dennis' customers

As Dennis mentioned, I'm a long time DIY speaker guy who does a few custom speakers for folks now and then. Certainly not as sophisticated in the crossover department as Dennis, but I think I do a pretty nice cabinet. If anybody's interested in seeing some recent builds, just give the word and I'll post some pics.

Hey Del, IIRC these are also your work?:

You gotta let me pick your brain one of these days

They are. Commissioned by Jeff Bagby for his personal use. If you want to pick my brain off the board, you can email me at delwon at verizon dot net. Be happy to share what little I know

Just so there's no misunderstanding, I just did the cabinets for Jeff.

I heard a prototype that used a BG10 midrange instead of the BG8. However, Dennis said the BG10 cost more but didn't offer any real advantage for this design, so it didn't make the cut.

Thanks Saturn!

Ironically, that's the only prototype I had heard about previously. :P

Is Saturn your favorite planet? :P

So many prototypes, including upward firing midranges. Lots of cabinet shapes. Lots of trips down South to see Del.

Damn, Del, can you build me a duplicate of B&W 802D with the drivers and crossovers of the Phil3?

I bet a lot of people would buy it for $8K/PR.

Not until I redid the crossover for the 802 cabinet. Which I will do NEVER.

Bahahahahha Not a B&W fan, Dennis?

There's not much I wouldn't try to build, but with this one, you'd have to charge $8K/pr just to cover the cost of the cabinets

Of course then you have the issue of trying to convince Dennis to do the crossover.

Now that Dennis mentions it, I do remember doing a bunch of test boxes for him. In fact, way back when he was first thinking of doing speakers commercially, he had me do a prototype for the Song Tower which actually looked quite nice. I think he still has them. Here they are.

Wow Del those would have fit in my house beautifully.

I believe those were the ones I saw, not sure on the black front, however, the first time I visited Dennis' it was like a Speaker Prototype Museum! At that time I was moving toward to the STs, but when I saw/heard the Phils, I knew. The highly regarded Songtowers are truly a piece of artsound! Dennis may think I am silly, but it was just awesome seeing the first/prototype of them, just cool!

I would enjoyed hearing some of the other very, very interesting prototypes big and small just hanging out throughout his home, but time was an issue.

And, Del, you are a genuine american craftsman! Congratulations!

Color me crazy but I think those look better than actual song towers.

I think so too. But I think it would have increased the cost of the SongTowers.

Hmmmm There's something familiar about those, but I can't quite place it.

I work at a custom cabinet shop and when Dennis first approached me about doing his cabinets, I told him I would be willing, but the shop work would come first. His cabinets are a sideline for me so I do them when I have the time. The first thing I'd like to say is THANK YOU to all of Dennis' customers who up 'til now, have been more than patient with me. I try my best to get the orders out short of working 16 hour days and Sundays. I'm glad to hear that customers so far, have been happy with my work. Here's another big THANK YOU in advance for all future customers' patience. I'd like to think that the wait is well worth it.

You made this thread even more enjoyable. Welcome!

Ok, guys, Dennis is "plannning" to have the Philharmonitor 2s ready at CAF, so if you want to hear them better get planning for July.

He has decided to promote them and I completely agree with him since I have lived with their sound for awhile. I can rave that they are great monitors, absolutely love mine. With the fountek and the 7" Seas, perfect combination.

Del won't mind these!!

Highly recommended!
Quick question about the tweeter height on the Phil 2's. How long is the tweeter and how high from the floor is the bottom of the tweeter. Alternatively, how high from the floor is the midpoint of the tweeter?

I'm building some speaker stands for some monitors I picked up with fountek tweeters and would like to get their tweeters the same height as the Phil 2's I'm awaitin' on.
From the bottom of the phil2s to the RAAL (middle) is 38 1/2. Of course without spikes.

Bottom of the phil2s to the bottom of the RAAL is 36"

The complete RAAL is 4 1/4.

Someone else can verify!

Hi Mr. LJ Could you give me a clue what your real name is so I'll know what to tell you when you start asking about your Phil 2 delivery time? Thanks

Wait, we can start asking about delivery time?? I guess this applies to everyone who doesn't own an Italian rust bucket.

I finally have my media room set up with new receiver, hd audio transport and other shiny new electronics. I am still waiting for new plasma displays and of course the Phils to complete this, but for the time being I am having a lot of fun even with my old Interludes and integrating new toys. It's been 5 months out of the man-cave and I was jonesing.

The worst part of the wait is how many times I've measured and marked where the speakers will go. I have cardboard cutouts of the dimensions of the bass, tape on the carpet, etc.

Now I sit with eyes closed and listen to my music, pretending the Philharmonics are in-house. Even that's fun because I know the date is approaching.

It's Noah. I haven't wanted to bug you since I know you're busy.
