Well, I never said he was replicating salks or that they sound the same. Dennis helps in the development of some of the salks and designs the crossovers for those he helps design so they will have a similar sound, obviously not identical, but similar. Many guys on here who have heard both salk speakers and the phils say they sound similar except for this or that. One of the biggest differences is the cabinetry, salk does truly custom work where anything goes, whereas the phils are a bit more specific in what you can get, but you can still get pretty custom with them. The salk speakers share many similar qualities to the phils, and I think saying that the Phils are el cheapo replicates isn't necessary fair to either speakers. Salk has more overhead, so there is more overall cost involved, but still not the profit margin of any major company. Plus piano on a Phil speaker is still $1500+. So piano from either company ain't cheap.
I'm also not sure how you can say they have a better sound stage. Soundscapes anyone? That's a bit of a blanket statement that does not apply to the entire salk lineup.
Hey, if you have people who will go through all the effort of a piano finish for cheap(ish) then power to ya. I only wish I did too
