o, I know this one. it suppose to compensate for a slight dip in that region in the on axis.

edit:
nvm, I don't know what cases that rise

Just fyi, you can`t really "control" off-axis response separately from the on-axis response.... you can only equalize the sound power response as a whole, normally by taking the 0 degree on-axis response as the reference.

What you do there, will affect what happens everywhere else. Of course different drivers and crossover slopes contribute differently to that sound power, so you can play around a little with it, but overall, what you do on one axis, you automatically do to every other axis!

I guess what I mean to say is, that while the on-axis response might be slightly depressed for whatever reason, the goal isn't to "compensate" for it off-axis - the vice versa - to compensate for too much off-axis energy by depressing the forward axis in isolation - isn't necessarily true either.

as for what acoustic phenominon causes more energy off-axis than on, I don't know.

First, you have to remember that the woofer continues to contribute some output above its nominal crossover frequency of 650 Hz, and that the tweeter also adds output below its crossover point of 2900 Hz. Then you have to remember that an 8" woofer will start to beam at higher frequencies, and that the much narrower midrange will have superior dispersion at its lower end. Same goes for the even narrower tweeter in relation to the midrange where they overlap. As you move further and further off axis, the relative ouput in the upper midrange and lower highs will start to increase relative to the lower frequencies, and the higher frequencies, where the tweeter starts to narrow its dispersion pattern. They only way to mitigate this problem is to deliberately even out the dispersion pattern of the tweeter with an acoustic lens of some kind. That's what the argument about "controlled directivity" is all about. The problem isn't as severe on the Phil's as on speakers with a wider midrange because the radiation pattern of the Neo8 and the RAAL aren't radically different where they overlap.

Well, I could be wrong. It's not easy to tell, but I'm thinking that the attached pic is Fuzz speakers stained with my center on top of them. The only difference between the two cabinets is the smaller woofer, and the unstained to me looks to be the small one.

Nope those three on the left are yours and the "unstained" ones are mine jut stained very lightly. Maple was a bit too blonde for my significant other so a couple shades darker was in order.

I have a collection of propaganda (and some silly parody) songs from the 60s referring to the cold war. They are HILARIOUS.

Look up "Radioactive Mama" :P

No, the first song I will listen to is this:

Love that song!

Listen to "Woods" by Bon Iver, (No relation) LOL!

With the Roy Orbison Bluray, I like the 5.1, it is about as real as one can get without being there! And

Me too! I figure, what song could be a more "powerful" first listen that that one?

After that, it's Mr. Charles then the rest of my collection.

I'll give a listen right now.

Dennis just sent over the tracking #. Let the tracking escapade commence!

I don't have one. It's blank. For some reason, only two of the packages are showing up. Dennis said all four were picked up. Hopefully they'll all get here at the same time!

I'm guessing the sampler CD was chosen carefully, with Dennis' taste it will surely be a hit. This will of course be the first item that goes into my player, but from my own collection I am most interested in hearing Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (I have two versions), which has beautiful violin (although not enough!) and oboe passages. From there I'm not so sure where to go. I have some Senegalese music with beautiful percussion and vocals that aren't taxing of the high end but will benefit from the Phil midrange drivers, and a few rock/alternative/acoustic that I am looking forward to hearing. And then a French group, Noir Desir, which includes beautiful clarinet solos.

Another I've been looking forward to is from the blu-ray of Concert for George, Anoushka Shankar's opening sitar solo. While it's not likely to be levels more spectacular on the Phils I have been saving this one up. I haven't seen her in a long time On the same disk, While My Guitar Gently Weeps by Eric Clapton will also be played.

I've been on hold listening to my own music. Other than a few disks to test out the new Denon Link connection I've been saving it for the Philharmonics. I'm looking forward to rediscovering what I have.

Well, I spent 3 days trying to download AirPlay, but could not, so Marantz is sending me another, the phils are waiting again!!!

I received another photo, I'll post when back on my computer. They're lacquered and looking great.

It turns out the SB woofer is a tad bit larger than the Scan.

Thank you very much, Nuance!

I will take a plethora of pictures.

As for a review, I may not be as eloquent as some of my fellow AVS members but i'll do what I can. I have listened to quite a few very expensive and IMO great sounding loudspeakers (E.g. Salon 2, KEF Blade, KEF 201/2, TAD CR1, Pioneer S-1EX etc.) While a direct comparison is not valid (nor possible) as I listened in different rooms at different times, I can say whether the Philharmonic 2 gives me an experience that is equally enjoyable to that of the other speakers.

They are right about that one, I swear there is music coming from the center, I have to get up and check occasionally to see if I have the Marantz in Pure Direct Mode.

Hey make your own convert to FLAC! I don't download a lot of music, my son sends me most of what I have, unless I am listening to Pandora or Grooveshark.com.

The sound is so astounding, so much that I constantly notice the nuances, (not you Brandon), in the movies, evening the streaming that I never noticed before.

Can't wait till I get the new marantz in, hopefully this one will work properly, and run audyssey properly. Even without it, I was amazed what a good match the Marantz and Phils are!!!
