In 1979 or 80 at the same age as Jared I bought my first 'good' speakers (a step up from Radio Shack), a pair of Yamaha NS-1000 that cost me about $1000. With inflation, weakened dollar and the fact that my retirement plan is now a 4.01(k) this probably translates to about $700,000. I'm happy for the both of you that you can make quality audio a priority at your age, that you are starting young enough to really enjoy things that matter. Seriously, congrats to you.

hehe, im only 27 here... it gonna cost me a *** load of money before i can buy a step higher of the phils... specially with my front stage being 3 x phils 2 , 2 x elemental design a7s-650 =)

A better pre/pro and amp probably a better purchase

Who is next in line??

Uggh. This is the hardest equipment sale I've done yet. I was just downstairs listening to EV's Phil 2's and they really are spectacular. I've got some severe seller's remorse. I was running them with the AVA Insight + 500 amp I got tonight (300wpc -> 8ohms / 600wpc -> 4ohms) and the sound was just so clear and present that it really was startling. Either the Phils really like the AVA amp or they really like power. Either way, they sound great.

Dennis - Do not stop making these. I may be ordering a pair of Phil 3's pretty soon.

That's great. I started my affair with Magnepans 20yrs ago when I was 16. Bought a used pair of 1b's out of the paper. I've had a pair ever since then except for the last few years. The Phils are an awesome start (helluva fine finish too IMO). If you ever want to upgrade, I think you'll really have to spend a lot more.

Congrats buddy!!! biggrin.gif

Hahah My friends HATE when I talk about speakers. In fact, I have a friend who LOVES music. Knows everything about music. Even he refuses to demo a few speakers i've recommended. frown.giffrown.gif

I bought my RadioShack speakers at 15. :P smile.gif After that I purchased a pair of $400 Yamaha speakers for $120. I've done LOTS of upgrading in my short 4 years. biggrin.gif

In my experience demoing, about 15-80K...and that's just for more bass. eek.gif

If I were to do anything as far as upgrading goes, I'd ask dennis to thow in another woofer.

Btw, sorry for posting like 600 times. :P It was tricky to multiquote on my phone.

Considering the size of the TQWT for one woofer... two woofers would be huge.

It's not like my room is small or anything :P

Between that and the price increase, I opted not to beg Dennis and Paul to design me a special Phil 4. biggrin.gif

My parents are still using NS-1000's. Back then I could not afford the NS-1000's I had to settle for the NS-690 II's. smile.gif I still have them in storage.

That is halarious, Jared, I can't discuss speakers, music, or anything related to purchasing or even thinking of amps!!!

They just roll their eyes!!! confused.gif

My wife just keeps saying...."I thought we were done with speakers"!  eek.gif

For the "most" part....yeah!

I even bought 4 of the WAF-1s from Chase Home Theater for surrounds and she hates them!!!

But, but, they are WAFs!!!!

Thanks hawk, at least you have a retirement, I'll be lucky to get any and forget about social security :roll eyes:. It's easy to make audio a priority at this age when you've found a good woman (who you can start training to put up with this life long hobby biggrin.gif) and not have to mess around with a bunch of them and then quit drinking halfway through college eek.gif.

I feel like my biggest issue will be that I won't be able to let any speakers I buy go. Maybe I'll just build two big rotating tables into the walls of my future house with a track system so I can just spin the wheel and slide a new pair out every time I get bored with a pair biggrin.gif Anyways, thanks again and you won't regret your Phils even if they translate into a $1,000,000 investment 20 years from now.

My parents are using a samsung HTIB I bought them a few years ago. I'm pretty sure if I threw it in the trash and they only used the TV speakers they wouldn't even notice eek.gif

It's going to be a fun and busy few weeks! I just got notification that my Rythmik FV15HP sub has shipped, to be delivered on Tuesday, and hopefully in the first week or two of July my Philharmonics may be ready for pick up.

I guess I better start lifting weights! eek.gif
post #2838 of 4138

I ask Dennis to carry mine out to the car!!! Ha Ha!!!

He just picked them up like a basket full of laundry and ski-daddled out the front door!!!eek.gifbiggrin.gif

I hope Dennis uses back braces. Those bass units are heavy. Pretty unwieldy in their boxes too.

My mother was a music major, so music has always been high on her list. Because of her, I listened to a lot of classical and jazz when I was young. smile.gif Nethawk, enjoy your new speakers.

Nethawk, when you anticipate pick up  of the Phils?

Thank you Mike, I'm very excited. My entire media room and all of its equipment are new, all the way down to the drink coasters on tables, the project begun last November. The only thing trumping that excitement is the anticipation of meeting Dennis and Del in person.

I'll give Dennis a break, he can carry the center channel speaker to the SUV. I'm sure, given its unique nature and the last of the lineup there is sentimental value and Dennis will appreciate a final few moments alone with it. By the way Dennis, if reading this and the speaker is finished, have you any thoughts to share regarding how it turned out?

Mrlittlejeans, I will be doing a pickup and saving Dennis the money and trouble of boxing the speakers, I am hoping they will be a bit less awkward to carry. Does anyone know the weight of the units? I should be good, if that 125lb. Rythmik doesn't kill me first!

Robert, If not mistaken it will be late June or the first part of July before Dennis receives his next shipment of SB Acoustics woofers, so the day is soon approaching. I'm taking a long weekend after the 4th, I'll be either picking up speakers or kayak camping. Either is fine with me.

Believe it or not, I just got word that the SB woofers arrived--on time. So I should have them by Monday and can start firing up 2's. Nethawk's are ready to receive them, although I still have to get his center channel together. Assuming I can get everything into the Jetta, we should be able to meet at Del's whenever we can find a mutually agreeable time.

On a different subject, I spent yesterday driving up to Connecticut and back in a van big enough to hold 2 Jettas. Those white enamel 3's that you might have seen pics of needed a little tune-up--I think I must have assembled those jobs on a Monday morning. Anyhow, I delivered them back to their rightful setting, which is quite spectacular. They're at one-end of an open-floor plan home designed in the late 50's by the same architect who did the Kennedy Center. The house has far superior acoustics, I might add. And the roof doesn't leak. That's a beautiful space, I like the library nook. The speakers look perfect. I don't see seating in the sweet spot though, that will keep me up at night!

Great news Dennis, thank you. Anytime that is convenient for you, either 6/30-7/1 or 7/4-8 I have free days, depending on your own schedule. If visiting with Del anytime during the week, if that works out better, I can just drive up and meet with him. I will be at CAF, I can shake your hand then.

Yippee!!

Hi I'll coordinate with Del so I can pick up some cabinets when I driver yours down. That may be next weekend. I'll keep in touch with you. As for the listening area in that beautiful house--there's built-in seating further back to the right. The pic only shows a small part of the house.

Been reading a bunch, and I'm getting curious about possibly replacing my Paradigm Studio 100s (now 7 or 8 years old or so) with a pair of Philharmonic 2s or 3s (2s probably make most sense for me, since I like my sub even for music listening). The custom cabinet stuff is an awesome option to have, as I'm looking for my next speaker purchase to be something that lasts me a long time and be as much a piece of furniture as a speaker. I think what my main concern would be going forward is what to use as a center channel. Sorry if the solution to this issue has been discussed, but the AVS search function is kind of hard to use for questions like this and my boss will murder me if I read a 95 page speaker thread right now. I've gathered that the Philharmonic center channels aren't being manufactured anymore... what would be a good match (so I can start thinking about possible timelines and budgeting)? I am currently running a Paradigm CC-590 center and I'm assuming that isn't going to work very well. It'd be extra nice if there was a way to somehow do a custom center in a finish that'd match whatever I would decide to go with for the 2s / 3s. Don't know if that is in any way possible, but if so I'd certainly be interested in exploring the possibility.

Thanks for any info, and congratulations on your speakers Dennis...

Hi My center channel is being manufactured--just not by me. Jim Salk is handling those now. You can get the simple MTM version with either the Fountek or RAAL OEM tweeter. Jim also has more elaborate WMTM models (that I also designed) that would be a good match. Any could be finished to match the Phil's. Jim could give you the details (salksound.com).

Ok - just some random questions and out-of-the-box thinking!
Well - maybe just dumb!!
As I really want a movie capable system, would this be at all logical?
Phil 3s for mains, Phil 2s for surrounds - with the bass box on floor and mid-tweet box on wall above, single Phil 2 center again with mid-tweet box separated from bass box? Maybe this is really stupid but seems doable? Would think it could really sound great!! I am obviously assuming the boxes can be separated.

You can always use a single Philharmonitor to match up to 2s or 3s.
