Is it worth it to me, even some scenes on streaming HD with netflix look bluray as well.

The Phils, SR-7005 Marantz and OPPO are winning combos.

It's definitely on my list, along with the 10X10 mini dsp, new subs, and hopefully two pairs of surrounds to get up to 7.2, but for now I couldn't be happier with the setup biggrin.gif

You might want to check with Dennis. He had offered a pair of MB0W1 in maple to me when I purchased my Philharmonics and center, but I decided later to keep my Infinity IL40 towers. The price was reasonable, and of course the quality is great. Just a thought.

Congrats on the center my friend, I'm happy for you. Even happier for me that I don't have to look over my shoulder anymore. biggrin.gif

Are those the ones from the CAF photo? If so I curse you for letting me know because I would LOVE to have them biggrin.gif I was actually considering building or buying a pair anyways, but if Dennis already has a pair in maple well then.............

As for looking over your shoulder, that is definitely over. Although there may be a little more shuffling and the Salk Songcenter's days may be numbered..........more on that in the coming weeks wink.gif

Thank you for the kind words, I'm humbled. You should be proud though, while I designed all of my furniture I did not have all of the tools necessary to build myself. My tower was built by a lifelong friend, the center stand by another, someone I've known since he was 6. While I love that my friends contributed, there is a lot of satisfaction in admiring one's own work, and you have a lot to admire.

Yes, they are the same. I'm not sure though, Dennis may have lugged them to CAF with the intention of selling them. Good luck!

Hi I definitely brought them along to sell. And they were sold as soon as I hooked them up along with the Philharmonics using the new Van Alstine ABX switching machine. A steal at $450.

You're welcome, and that's great luck to have friends who can do such great work for you. Just like I lucked out with this stand with all the help I had.

That looks awesome, fuzz! Now we just need to get you a 60 inch TV so it doesn't look so overwhelmed by the Philharmonics. biggrin.gif The new Panasonics are sick - just sayin'. smile.gif

Those new Panny's are so awesome. I've had my eye on the VT 65" for awhile now, but audio stuff first. Besides, audio stuff is easier to swap out without the GF noticing. If I changed the TV to one that is nearly 20 inches bigger she would notice and you would never hear from me again eek.gif

Haha, Oh believe me I've been telling myself that for the past almost two years. The problem is she keeps hanging around and now she's moving in. eek.gif New tv or GF new tv or GF.........TV's are pretty. They provide enjoyment, they don't care if I yell at them, they don't yell back, they don't yell at me for buying more equipment, there's a mute button, better yet there's an off button, and if you get tired of one you can just buy a new one.

Now GF............well..........she cooks and cleans for me if I'm good.

GF it is tongue.gif:D

What can I say I'm a sucker for a clean apt and full stomach wink.gifbiggrin.gif

biggrin.gif She's an observant one, that's for sure. She's learned that I try to take advantage of her lack of interest in my hobby (she says obsession) by replacing certain things with other, more expensive things, that look very similar to the old things. That only worked a few times before she caught on.

Now whenever she sees a new box she just punches me and asks questions later biggrin.gif

That song in the background sounded familiar. I wonder where I heard it before.

Hello everybody,

Just got the news this morning that my Philharmonic 3 are on their way. It's been a pleasure so far to deal with Dennis and Del, and I'm really looking forward to those speakers (my biggest extravagance in listening gear so far). They will be shipped to the Philippines by sea, will take about 2 months, giving me some time to think about amplification.

I've been looking at the gear some of you are using to drive them. I see that several of you, including Dennis, are using Van Alstine amps. I also read a statement by someone that they need at least 200W to drive properly, I don't remember if that was in this thread (and he probably meant 200 into 4 ohm).

Elsewhere I see a review about Salk songtowers driven by a Van Alstine ultravalve amp (35W pc), a combination made in heaven they say. Now those have a sensitivity of 88db, the Phil 3 have 85db. I'm not very technically minded, I have no idea how much of a difference those 3db make.

Did somebody try to drive them with, say, a good quality amp that has 50W pc into 8 ohm?

thanks, Kees

Ocean freight? is that the best option? Jim sent me a pair of songtower,by air arrived in 5 freaking business days and it was very reasonable priced, just needed to pay a few duties, came to around 400-420US to Macau. I forgot the name of that freight company though.

Personally I think the only amp worth looking into is this one:

Ohhh and don't forget your cable:

:P biggrin.gif

In all seriousness, check out the crown XLS 1500.

The customs in Macau evidently are in another league than those in Phils. It's a jungle here and apart from time wasted they'll charge you much more than the worth of an item, so common sense is to stay as far away from them (or most gov't agencies) as possible. Only one company afaik that somehow has the right connections. But the Phils are bulky and heavy, would be way more expensive by air (the Salks would be 310US by sea this way).

Thank you! I got a roll of proletarian BlueJeans, Dennis was so kind to put it in one of the boxes for me.

About that Crown, I've looked at Behringer and Mackie before but they didn't inspire too much confidence. Crown looks better. The fan shouldn't be the problem, computers have fans and after a lot of headache I learned that there are fans on the market that are as good as silent. But this amp is Class D, I read http://www.amplifiersite.com/class-a-b-c-d-amplifier/]here that "Class D however, may not be used for very high quality audio is or in applications where EMI has to be as low as possible."

i dont know about crown but i got a Behringer Ep4000 to power my subwoofers and the sound of the fan drive me nuts. These amps are made for professionnal who drive them hard. The fan on this is ridiculously loud, it's like a mini vacuum, I've ordered a 12Db half the air 24v fan to replace it (behringer use 24 V fan, not 12v computer fan). After all, our home utilisation is a piece of cake for those heavypounds. I hope it works. If you dont want to mod a ampby yourself, buy something quiet smile.gif

Au contraire, mon frère.......that was an excellent portrayal of someone who doesn't perform a video interview every day. It looked genuinely unrehearsed! Oscar material for sure! biggrin.gif

So I decided to see what's what with the Philharmonics. I ran a test to see which would run out of gas first, the Phils or a Cinepro 1K2. Granted the 1K2 is on the older side, but it's built like a tank and should still be putting out pretty darn close to its rated specs. So with approximately 600 WPC into 4 ohms in one hand and Mozart's 5 in the other I was able to get 104.5 dbC peaks. The room is approximately 2400 cubic feet, but open to a small kitchen, the bedroom, and the porch door is anything but airtight. The clip light started to barely come on during some of the crescendos, so Phils-1 Amps-0. I know I should probably be running into some thermal compression at those levels, but I noticed practically no degradation in SQ and would guess that the Phils could take all 800 WPC of another amp of similar quality that I have lying around. However, after this test I have no desire to run that test since this one was well beyond what I think the majority of people would qualify as comfortable listening levels.

I don't know about a bigger room, but for 2-3,000 cubic feet at a listening distance of ~9-12 feet your eardrums will burst before these things die out. IMHO of course biggrin.gif

Thanks for running that test. That was very interesting. My friends Philharmonic 2s probably couldn't pass that test. When I crossed the Phils at 80 Hz to my sub they might have been able to pass that test though. I guess the philharmonic 3s are the way to go for headbangers.
