"Human interest stories"? LOL! The term is soap opera! And that is what is wrong with most war movies, the filmmakers cannot ressist the temptation to ruin thes movies by mixing fictional characters into an otherwise true account. These characters are always involved in a silly love triangle or some other relationship that is totally irrelevant to the war, and that no one really cares about anyway. No, TTT did it the right way, and as a result, it is a gripping drama that is never boring in the least.

Speaking of Midway, it contains many serious flaws, not the least is the earlier mentioned soap opera aspect. Also, it has what is most likely the worst editing of any movie I have ever seen. In addition, much of the dialog is childish and trite-sounding, as if it had been written by someone like Ed Wood! In fact, Plan 9 From Outer Space actually sounds more professionally written in some places!

On a positive note, the Blu-ray transfer of TTT is one of the very best I have seen in a long time. And again, I am really glad they did NOT make it into a soap opera.

It's sad, but movies about military campaigns that simply "tell the damned story" never do particularly well with critics or moviegoers. The Longest Day is probably an exception.

As for the transfer on the new US Blu-ray, it is a serious step up from the original BD released in some other territories earlier. I can't speak to any recent releases in other countries, but I saw a BD from a year or two ago and this new disc smokes it.

Eh, I'm calling BS on the "new transfer". The screenshots on blu-ray.com look exactly the same as the UK version I got for Christmas last year, including the opening menus and subtitle font.

Don't get me wrong, it's as gorgeous now as it was then, but it's not new.

add me to that list... imo, all the extraneous fluff takes away from the "real story" being told...

but that's me... i have no problem sitting through all 3 1/2 hours of "das boot" (well, with the exception of an occasional pause for a nature break )...

i'm in too... i don't think i've actually seen the whole thing since WAY back in the day at the drive-in...

And yet FROM HERE TO ETERNITY is by far the best Pearl Harbor movie.

Fox really came though with this one.

The first shot of the Japanese flag flying & the second shot of the American flag flying was eye candy. A shot in the US State Dept with the ambassador alone behind the desk was all most 3D.

I'm not even a fan of "skies" in HD; yet skies were good after the opening credits; except for one shot from a ship where the sky was an unattractive pinkish mess on the up left of the screen.

I seriously doubt, with theater presentation limitation, that 80% of the patrons back-in-the-day saw a film with this proper scope, color balance, & contrast the Blu-ray release exhibits.

I wouldn't say smokes it, both are pretty good, but the new one definitely wins by not having the severe EE.

I agree completely on all counts. Pearl Harbor was terrible, merely a long, drawn-out "potboiler". Even the special effects of ships exploding were ridiculously exaggerated.

And you are right, Das Boot is one of the best movies, of any genre, ever made.

You cannot draw any kind of comparison between TTT and From Here to Eternity. The latter is a human drama about army life and really has little to do with the Pearl Harbor attack, which only happens near the end of the movie anyway, and has little, if any effect on any of the main characters. The whole setting really could easily have been moved to a different place and different time without having any significant effect on the story.

Drawing a comparison between TTT and From Here to Eternity is about as big a stretch as a comparison between TTT and the musical, South Pacific.

And yet, he did.

From Here to Eternity is not even a war movie ' just a love story.It is a great movie but to compare it to TTT is stupid.

You don't necessarily need depictions of tanks blowing up buildings to have a war movie.


You can learn something by comparing/contrasting any movie with any other movie.

Just bought it and watched with my wife.(she'd never seen it before). Picture was superb(with some nit-pickiness here and there). Audio could have been better. Essentially the sound was augmented stereo. There was never any rear-speaker action. If I had to grade it. Audio: C+ Picture A-, Overall A/B+
