Marantz SR4023 vs. Harman Kardon HK 3490

I would like to buy a stereo (what a best way to listen to the music other than 2 channel stereo?) receiver for the long haul. For now, I will only acquire Sonny SSF7000 speakers. However, when budget permits, I would like to go for B&W or Martin Logan's. I am confused between HK and Marantz. THD has some kind of variance and I am not sure whether THD is some how tied up with other specs and variant between various receivers or is it an universal benchmark irrespective of other specs of individual receiver? Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks.

In addition to that, I am not able to get my head around the concept of High Current receiver. How does and should that play a role in making a decision in choosing a receiver? Thannks.

High current is a "catchphrase" in audio. It pertains to whether an amp has the "power it needs" on tap...or if it creates it on the fly. Staying ahead of your needs is obviously the best method.

Between these two, I'd pick the 3490. I have a 3480 and it is clean and clear. They both have pre in/out in case you ever want a more powerful amp. But the HK is already packing an honest 120, vs the 80 of the Marantz.

Wow, can't believe we finally agree on something Schan. My vote is also for the H/K easily. The H/K also has digital and analog connections whereas the Marantz is analog only. You should be comparing the Marantz to the H/K 3390 instead of the 3490. Below is a review and test report of the 3490. You'll see that the 3490 is actually more powerful than specs state. Good luck and enjoy.
