someone building his own underhung

what are the odds? as the NS18s have peaked my interest, suddenly I see a thread on ROE about SQ and decided at the last second to click it... he is rebuilding a monster daily ground pounder sub into a SQ underhung with a copper shorting ring. Maybe I could do this with my 1803s? His top plate looks much larger though.

I am a whore. sneaking these in, cuz I am glad I went back to BLACK!

Copied from his thread:

" So... what if I took a Nightshade v.2 motor and made it into an SQ woofer ?

Well... that is what I'm about to do! Calling it the "NSQ"

Full length copper shorting sleeve added plus under-hung coil !

The sleeves finished up today at a local machine shop... coils are being made down in Florida.

{about the copper sleeve} * Full 1 mm thickness

So this is one meaty "SQ" driver

Coils are being made as well.

First iteration sample coils are in -- I am going to try two versions of the coil to see which I like the best / works the best.

Very light... very low inductance... so likely spider will be very soft as well to get the FS where I want it.

Holding the coil in my hand I think I should use one NS style spider to get where I want to be with it. "

Wow. That sucker looks pretty damn beefy!

Keep pinging them about making an 18" version.

I sent Scott at Ascendant Audio an email asking what he thinks of underhung recones for the 1803s!

Don't it? There's a dealer in Watertown, not too far from here, that wants to do some custom Nightshades for me. They have a demo car with 4 DDZ 15's with the special motors they only made 36 of. After I get the subs and alt in I'll head up there to see it and get the van metered. They do 160's with it.

" Surroundless is still on the back burner for a general product. Although I wish I could put more time into it as it works so well.
1803s have a 1.25" top plate and making them an underhung would severely limit their excursion potential. It would be nice to have a slightly larger gap to put a more common long coil in them, but we are sorta stuck with the dimensions. "
