it would be highly unlikely that it is the avr... it's essentially passive in this process... it doesn't say to the player "give me this".. it takes what it gets...

the last part is up to you... again, it makes NO difference...

Then what exactly am I doing wrong? I have HDMI connections running throught the enitre setup. Do they need to be 1.3 if so, how can I tell what version my HDMI is. Both Blu-ray players (PS3 and Sony bdp-s185) have the same result. No sound and receiver displays "stereo".

Also, when I leave it as PCM, I get no audio coming from the rears and there is alot of distortion/static. If I turn on the Multi-Output setting on the PS3 where it downmiixes to a DTS core 5.1, sound does come when I set it to bitstream and "DTS" is displayed on the receiver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bought this receiver open box from Best Buy on Nov. 2 with a 30 day return policy. If the receiver is defected, I would like to return in time to purchase a new receiver.

I have a 53 and haven't any problems like this. It's worth investing in a good set of HDMI cables to rule that out. Get them online though.. BB is way to expensive for cables. I would definitely take it back before your 30 days are up if this isn't resolved.

it is not the cables... if it was, he would have video issues as well... audio is embedded in the video stream in tmds (the protocol for hdmi data transfer)...

op... review the threads for your disk spinners... something isn't right here... the avr doesn't care whether you feed it pcm or a bitstream, as the very first thing it does when presented with a bitstream is convert it to pcm... thus, any issues that exist when passing pcm would also exist when passing a bitstream...

if your problem was the "opposite direction" (i.e. getting a bitstream to the avr, and then experiencing static/distortion, but not getting it when passing pcm), then you potentially could have an avr issue...

It is actually the receiver. Called Pioneer and confirmed that I have a broken encoder's chip. Going to return and hopefully find another 7.1 receiver around the same price range because this receiver was a steal. Thx for the replies.

Bought a Denon AVR-1613 and heppy with it so far. Plays all my Blu-rays with DTSMAHD and TrueHD. Appreciate everyone's help.

intriguing... not sure what they are referring to as "encoder chip"... as there's nothing to encode... also, if they were able to pinpoint it over the phone that easily, it implies that there is a "known issue" with the unit...

sure wish you'd get it fixed, as it would add to our knowledge base...

If you have complaints about the fullness of the sound or missing bass than I recommend follow the instructions in the above 1st post, especially use reverb info to reduce the sampling delay used by MCACC manually. This will make the sound fuller and bring back the bass.

Just picked up the VSX-52 floor model for $255 from best buy. It didnt have any of the accessories. Is it worth buying the set-up mic from Pioneer for $20 and remote for $30 + $12 shipping and handling? Any other accessories that come with it that I'll want to pick up? Considered picking up a logitech harmony instead but not sure if i'll need the factory remote for anything like programing the harmony. I'm pretty new to the home theater world.

Picked up a set of Polk Monitor 70's for my fronts, searching for a CS2 and going to head home tonight and figure out if I can use the Monitor40's for my surrounds or if my living room arrangement will only allow for the Monitor30's since I might have to wall mount them.

Also, is there anything specific that I should take care to check on the receiver before my 30 day return period runs out? I'm not too worried because I am going to purchase the extended 4 year warranty they offered for $45, but rather save myself some headaches down the road if I can.

1) i don't know if the pioneer mic is anything special.. but its got a nice long cord and does the job for the MCACC calibration

2) i hate the remote, personally.. and pretty much just use the iOS apps to control it, and they are awesome IMHO

3) i would just hook it up to all your components and make sure everything works.. blu ray, streaming netflix/vudu/etc, SACD (if you are into those) and make sure its pumping out multichannel sound as it should.

yes, buy the mic... it's required to run mcacc, which you will want to do...

i'd skip the oem remote and buy a harmony...

Any recommendations on a harmony remote?

I have a comcast cable box, LG Plasma, Apple TV2, ps3. Don't really need ps3 functionality, i'm fine using the controller, but that would be a plus if it worked for that too.

Hey guys, first time poster here.

Like many others, I was able to pick up a clearance VSX-52 from Best Buy when I purchased a pair of B&W CM5's and a sub. Right now I'm running 2.1 for music and I'm very satisfied. But unfortunately watching TV and movies seems to be significantly lacking for dialogue. I have my speakers bi-amped (of course) and set up my own EQ through the receiver, and also made sure all the speakers which I don't have are set to "none" but I still can't figure out how best to set up my system for 2.1 for movies. What is the best way to set up a phantom center? I don't have the space for a center channel speaker right now. I haven't run MCACC yet because I'm afraid of losing all my current settings. Thanks in advance.

1) don't bother bi-amping... it accomplishes nothing...

2) run mcacc... that way the avr "knows" you are running a phantom center...

Definitely get the setup mic. It mounts to a camera tripod which makes it easy to use for MCACC. You want MCACC else you might as well sell that receiver and get a cheaper one.
I like the pioneer remote. I often use it when I am listening to music to tinker around with the settings. Its easier that digging through Harmony menus or remembering the Harmony button mapping. Of course the Android app is as good if not better than both.

I have Monitor 70s for my fronts, an HSU subwoofer, and the other 5 speakers are another brand I can't recall at the moment.

Things to check
1. The internet connection works
2. The AM tuner works
3. The FM tuner works
4. The MCACC works
5. It will decode Dolby Digital. It will Decode Dolby True HD or whatever over HDMI.
6. Each speaker output works.
7. (Optional) The optical output works.

Hey all-
My old Sony receiver went out with a puff of smoke (literally) last weekend. Best Buy had an open-box VSX-53 for a price I couldn't pass up. However, all that it came with was the power cord and the remote.
I managed to find a mic to do the MCACC calibration, but I would like to be able to tweak things via AVNavigator. I couldn't find the download anywhere on the Pioneer site, so I e-mailed customer service and they referred me to part #ARU7005 which is $13.14. I went to order it and they wanted another $9.00 something to ship it via UPS ground, so in total, it was $28.00 something after tax for software that should be free in the first place. I though that was a bit ridiculous.

Does anyone know where I can get a download? Worst case, I could just suck it up and buy the thing, but I though I would check here first.

What the heck has happened with the iPad / iPhone iControlAV2 app? Seems like since I upgraded to ios6...the app seems to no longer recognize the AVR52 on my network. Dreaded error code: B27102

Have rebooted everything. Any thoughts / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a really stupid question, but I couldn't figure this out.

I tried to set up my receiver last night to log into Pandora. I got to the screen where you enter your Pandora username and went through the painful process of entering each letter with the remote. After I entered my username, I couldn't figure out how to 'submit' and get to the password page! 'Enter' just moves the cursor over one space. There are no on-screen instructions to tell you how to accomplish this. What am I missing?

I'm very interested in responses to this quesion, because I find the icontrolAV2 app works about 75% of the time. I have deleted and reinstalled this app 25 times, and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. It seems very random. I have a very strong wi-fi signal, so it isn't that. Does anyone else experience this? Very frustrating.

The only thing I can think of is that you are hitting the "return button" (square button on right side) on the remote and not the "Enter" (small round button in the middle of remote) But my apologies if this is not the case. The return button takes you back a screen and you loose everything. I made that mistake the first time.
The round 'enter' button just advances the cursor to the next box to enter another character.

I have a couple questions on the VSX-53.

Is there a way to reorder the inputs? I was able to do it on the app but on the receiver they're in the same order.

Also with the app iControlAV2, is there a way on there or on the receiver to disable the detection/control? Or assign a login? Just don't want anyone else controlling it other than me.
