The "OFFICIAL" Pioneer Elite VSX-52 / 53 Owner's Thread - Page 21

Hi There,

I"m new here, but I've been using AVS for the entire process of gearing up my home theater/sound system.

I've only recently been able to get out on my own, and I've finally got a HOUSE with no shared walls, or even neighbours within view of the place.

That, coupled with the means to purchase quality sound gear means that I took advantage of the Holiday sales this year.

So I picked up the VSX-1326 + two klipsch towers on sale during Boxing Day....for what i think is a steal of a price....

Due to the construction of the place, and that I primarily listen to music, I have opted to not go all in on a surround setup. It just wouldn't work in the space.

The main part of the house is a 16 sided open-concept space ~ 25 feet in diameter. Both the Kitchen and the "Entertainment" are in this space, split about half and half (tiles in the kitchen, wood flooring on the other half).

So because of this strange shape, I think a 2.1 system is the way to go (for now), and as I said, quality musical sound is of a higher priority than surround sound for movies etc.

My system:
TV: LG 47" LW5600
AVR: Pioneer VSX 1326 (AKA Elite 53)
Fronts: Klipsch RF-82's
Sub: Klipsch SW11B
(I will admit: I have been debating getting a centre channel speaker, just to beef up conversation audio in movies, but it's not a high priority.)

Components: PS3 (slim), Xbox360, Macbook pro (via HDMI), Apple TV, Media hard drive (connected to to the TV)

Everything is HDMI, the TV is connected to the receiver via optical (I didn't feel like messing with the Audio Return Channel via HDMI)

My questions:

1) Does anyone have any experience with Bi-Amping with the VSX-1326? And is this a practical way to go to get just a little more umph out of my speakers?

2) Sub placement - I've seen some setups with the sub behind the couch, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to go for musical bass...I feel like it should be sourced from the same general area as the two main speakers, I just have some tricky placement issues fitting the two towers, sub, and entertainment console in teh space (there's a very inconvienient doorway that limits where the speakers can go before the wall curves too far towards the viewing position) Any advice on this?

The system is currently still boxed up, as I haven't moved it up to the house yet (bought the system in Vancouver, and the house is in Nelson, about an 8 hour drive away), and I work internationally, so I probablywon't get to set it up and make the house shake until late February or early March. I'm just trying to get some research in, so when it comes to setup, I can make sure to have everything I need, and a good idea of what I"m doing.

And i read through this entire thread a few days ago, so thanks to everyone who had problems and everyone who helped to solve them....I feel like I'm a few steps ahead already.

[edit]
Just realized another thing.....I eventually want to set up a second zone in another room (which we'll call: "The Den" ), so I guess if I do that I will not be able to bi-amp the front speakers? Is that correct?

I know it wasn't a huge discount but after some searching on Best Buy's website, I found an open box and purchased the VSX-52 yesterday. It's working great so far.
I picked up the 1326 at Future Shop's boxing day sale and have found it a great improvement to my system, but a little overwhelming as it has been quite a while since I upgraded my equipment.

I have a simple set up in a small condo - samsung blue ray, samsung monitor, rogers PVR all connected to the VSX-1326 through HDMI, Playbook Tablet with music, and a 5.1 speaker system (Bose cubes).

Now the question:

How do I play video on the monitor from one source (i.e. watch a hockey game) while listening to from another source (cable box, radio, internet radio, etc.)?

If I am able to do this, I will have domestic peace on Saturday nights!

HI :

Best Buy matched an on line price of $650.00 for my VSX-52

LOL

Hmm...wonder if I could get the same thing done for a vsx-53. Well, I could probably just get a squaretrade warranty for the cost of the sales tax.

thanks Bud,

I called Pioneer tech support just after this post, and they said yes they knew it is a problem . I called back yesterday and they haven idea when they will get around to fixing it. Ironically this weekend I was helping a buddy look at what he thought was a problem with his Denon receiver, it works fine with my Kuro.

To your first question, Ive never biamped speakers as I currently run a 9.1 setup with my vsx 52, but to your second question ive recently spent a lot of time learning a lot of the ins and outs of subwoofers because Ive had to deal with some nasty room modes. Having a sub away from the front soundstage could make the sub very localizable which may or may not be to your liking. Id recommend placing the subs either between the 2 mains or in a corner. With a large space like that id recommend you do the sub crawl test to find the best placement. I would suggest you ask in the subwoofer subforum, there are a lot of knowledgable people there that helped me out greatly with my situation.

It may come down to what sounds best or what looks best.

Good luck

Let me guess, is it Satellite or ATT U-Verse?

I have read numerous posts about audio problems with Direct TV, Dish and the worst being AT&T U-Verse
Though usually it is about Audio dropouts and not Sync issues.

I have Time Warner Cable in two locations, one is the Pioneer VSX 1020 and the other has my Pioneer Elite VSX 53.
I have never seen any Sync problems at either location...
Unless I'm watching the old Asian classics Godzilla or something like that! LOL!

However I am in the US, so I do not know that much about Canadian TV.
I seriously think that it is a TV Provider issue and not the Pioneer, if it was the Pioneer, I would think that you would also see it on your Blu-Ray's and other components in.
You could bypass the Pioneer all together for Audio and run your Audio to your TV Directly and see if you still experience it.

Good Luck,
Bud B

I agree with this. I currently have Cox cable running through a mid entry level Yamaha receiver (waiting on shipment for my VSX 52!) and every once in awhile theres a sync issue, on random channels, at random times. Look at it this way. Your receiver cant really distinguish between channels. If it was the receiver causing the sync issues, it would be happening on all channels. The fact its one channel randomly clearly (in my mind anyway! lol) points to the provider.

Hi! New to the forum but not to audio/video.

I am running DVI to HDMI for video from my MacBook Pro and optical out for sound. I get no sound unless I unplug the DVI cable. I'm assuming the receiver is looking for sound through HDMI and bypassing the optical in. All settings are correct in the setup menu so my question is if there is a way around this so I can still run DVI and optical out to receiver. I'm hoping there is just a setting I am missing.

If not, I have FireWire 800 so if there is a way to send sound and video through that to HDMI that would work as a solution as well.

Thanks Gurus!

......Sorry if the question has already been answered. I searched but could not find anything on the topic.

Nevermind....Someone else already solved this by pressing the number "4" on the remote for signal select and all is right with the world again!

Well turned system on this morning and the problem is back. Frustrating. Has anyone found a solution.

Let us know how it turns out.

So I also did the MCACC calibration and it set my VSX-52 speakers to Large. Front, Center, Rear all Large. I have paradigm studio 20's for my L/R, paradigm cc-490 for the center, paradigm studio 40's for my rears and a Definitive supercube ii sub. Should i manually change the speakers to "small"? YES! Set them to small or your sub won't work. We don't know why it defaults to large most of the time.

Recently purchased a Pioneer VSX-1326k (AKA VSX-53 Elite) SOLID receiver so far.....AirPlay and IControl is amazing, also completed my very first HTPC Build.

All my components are connected to the Receiver thru an HDMI cable.

Home Theater Setup:
Display: Pioneer Kuro 5020FD
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1326k (AKA VSX-53 elite)
Speakers: Bose Acoustimass Series 6 (5.1)
Blu-Ray Player: Sony BDP-S350
Cable Box: Rogers Explorer 8300 HD-PVR
Game Console: Playstation 3
Other: HTPC Windows 7 base XBMC and WMC

My HTPC Make:
CPU: Intel i3-550 LGA 1156 Clarkdale
Motherboard: Zotac H55-ITX Wifi
Memory RAM: Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3
Hard Drive SSD: OCZ Vertex II 60GB
Hard Drive HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB Green (Media Drive)
Optical Drive: LG-CT21N-OEM
OS: Windows 7 Home (64bit)
Case: SilverStone Sugo-06 450W Power Supply

Last night I hooked up the following HTPC to the Receiver, and I booted the PC up, display had no issues.....however I am not getting any sound??? all drivers are installed for the HTPC, sound works when hooked up to PC speakers. That is not the issue.

Questions:
1. Is this a "pass-thru" setting on the receiver, that I am not aware of?
2. Should I just run the HDMI directly to the Pioneer Kuro TV, and send an optical cable to the receiver, and be done with it?
3. Are there certain HDMI-IN ports that I need to use for the HTPC? currently I am using the HDMI-2....

with the following setup
HDMI-1 - (Rogers PVR)
HDMI-2 - (HTPC)
HDMI-3 - Front panel (OPEN)
HDMI-4 - Video-IN (OPEN)
HDMI-5 - DVD (OPEN)
HDMI-6 - DVR/BDR (PS3)
HDMI-7 - BD-IN (Sony Blu-Ray Player)

HDMI-OUT1 - too Display Pioneer Kuro 5020FD
HDMI-OUT2 - (OPEN)

Just wondering is there a catch for this receiver when it comes to connecting a HTPC? Also wondering why it will not show up in the Windows 7 playback devices as a seperate icon....under windows. "Pioneer Receiver" I have seen in Assassin's Tutorial Guides that his receiver "Denon" shows up in the playback devices as a seperate icon and even says "Denon Model# receiver" Do Pioneer receivers not like Windows???

Any info greatly appreciated,

Actually, that could be the issue. You didn't say what kind of video card you have. If you have an onboard soundcard which is producing sound to your PC speakers, you need to configure windows to output sound to your HDMI-enabled video card.

Stupid me, that probably is the problem......I am using the Intel i3 Clarkdale, with the onboard video and sound. Should be solid enough.

How do I configure Windows to accept HDMI for the sound?

Thanks

Did you get your issue with no sound of video resolved? I had the same thing happen to me. Turned system on one morning and no sound or video no matter what source I selected. Only had system for 45 days when this happened. Took receiver in to service center and they couldn't fine anything wrong. Worked fine for them. I picked it up reconnected everything and it worked fine for me until this morning. Turned it on and the problem was back - just 3 weeks after i got it back from the shop. I hadn't changed anything. I disconnected everything then hooked up one set of speakers and tried the tuner and no audio. So i dropped it off at the service center again. Hopefully this time they find the problem.

Hi Wozman,

Right click on the Speaker in your Taskbar.
Scroll down to "Playback Devices" and left click on that.
Now a "Sound" properties box should open up.
I have a ATI AV Video Card so I have a choice that is:
"Realtek HDMI Output"
If you have a choice that states "HDMI Output" Left Click once on it to highlight that choice and then left click on the "Set Default" box at the bottom.
Click on "Apply" and "OK" and you are done.

You may hear Audio immediately from your HTPC through your Pioneer, if not give it a second and if still no Audio, change the Input on the Pioneer to say your TV Input
and then back to the HTPC HDMI Input, it should handshake and you will hear Audio.

Good Luck,

Actually not that different than my set-up, and similar large room with combined kitchen den, etc. Even half wood/half tile. [Either great minds think alike; or maybe misery loves company]

Everything digital HDMI so as to get the best sound.

So forget about your second zone. Will not function with any digital inputted sources (either HDMI or optical).

Also, forget about the second video output unless the second monitor is essentially similar to the primary one. [Like trying to use an XGA projector on one output with a 1080P LCD monitor on the other.] Both outputs have to be both HDMI and same resolution and HDCP compliant. [Pioneer does not down-convert.]

Macbook Pro is not HDMI compliant; it is DVI. The Mac mini is HDMI/HDCP compliant. This might be a benefit, though, as maybe you won't get bitten by the copy-protection scheme which prevents the above. Don't know though as my MacMini is HDCP compliant. Not sure what the Pioneer does if the Source is not HDCP compliant while the monitor is. Try it out and let us know.

Bud B.;

[Sorry, this is a reprise of an earlier post i made which never got answered. I'm humbly trying again...]

Since you have both a vsx-53 and a Logitech remote; I would like to ask you a question. Have you been able to use your remote to do anything with Zone 2/3? I can't find any way to turn them on/off; set input, etc. If I try to customize a button, I don't see any of the Pioneer commands coming up related to the Zone commands.

Have you tried this? And if so, how did you do it?

Thanks;

Thanks Bud B,

I have tried that already and still no sound.....BUT I believe I might have found my problem in the process. I think???

I only have two option there, under "Playback Devices" that being "Speakers" and "Realtek Digital Output", probably means if I put in an optical cord it will work correct? But since I have my HDMI cord already in, and have the video working but no sound.....Am I just missing an Intel Driver for Realtek HDMI Output? I would think....

If so, where can I find the correct driver for this, really appreciate if you can lead me towards that. Find it funny that my Display is working thru the HDMI port anyways.

My Mother Board and CPU info is:
CPU: Intel i3-550 LGA 1156 Clarkdale
Motherboard: Zotac H55-ITX Wifi

I think I am getting closer, LOL....so frustrating.

Thanks again,

Yea, I was only going to use zone 2 for audio anyways. Is it possible to use 'speaker B' in order to get the same audio in the other room? Technically, both rooms are only separated by a wall, but I'd rahter ahve clear audio in both rooms than be listening through the wall.

Worst case-scenario is I will run my macbook through the TV and bypass the AVR if it is not compliant.

I originally was going to use speaker B' in the same manner and for the same reason you are trying. The problem I quickly ran into is that there is no separate volume control for the Spkr B. Therefore, unless you running the EXACT SAME speakers from both A&B, and both rooms are EXACTLY THE SAME acoustically, then one set of speakers will be louder (or softer) than you want. Really dumb design in my opinion. [By the way, I called Pioneer on this and they recommended I use an external volume control you can buy from Radio Shack for $50 or so!!!]

So I next decided to use Zone 2, and get a separate Amp/Preamp (which I already had: my old Pioneer Elite this one replaced!]. And this is where I found out about the limitations of using digital sources. You say I was only going to use zone 2 for audio anyways; make sure you realize that zone 2 audio MUST come from an analog source. So say you are running iTunes from your Mac Mini through a HDMI input, it will not work. Or from your Macbook Pro through an optical phono jack; it will not work. Must be analog through RCA cables.

Frankly I'm not sure how useful Zone2/3 are since they don't work with the majority of the inputs to this receiver.

Again, I think this is stupid design and should be considered if anyone is looking to by this unit.

If the "Digital Output" did not work and because the HDMI Output is proprietary to your MOBO, I would contact support for your Zotac H55-ITX Wifi and see what the MOBO Manufacturer suggests.
You may need to go into the BIOS and then to Audio and just turn on the HDMI Audio Output, but before I did anything I would definitely contact them at this point.
They will either point you in the right direction in regard to a Driver Download or a BIOS setting.

Hi Jetcity,

I believe that there are NO AV Receivers that will pass Digital to a Zone.

Download a few OP Manuals for any receiver, Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, etc..etc... I am pretty certain that you will find that their Zone Audio is the same as the Pioneer in regard to digital.
There are different "Sources" available for Zones though.
See Below:

Zone Sources:

Elite VSX 52
Zone 2 Sources : DVD / TV / Sat / DVR / Video / Home Media Gallery / iPod USB / CD / Tuner / Adapter Port / Sirius
Multi-Room and Source Output: 2 Zone A/V
Multi-Zone On-Screen Display: Yes
Versatile Speaker Configuration: Bi-Amp / Zone 2 / B-Speaker / Surround Back / Front Height / Front Width

Elite VSX 53:
Zone 2 Sources: DVD / TV / Sat / DVR / Video / Home Media Gallery / iPod USB / CD / Tuner / Adapter Port / Sirius
Zone 3 Sources: DVD / TV / Sat / DVR / Video / CD / Tuner / Adapter Port
Multi-Room and Source Output: 3 Zone (3rd Zone Audio Only)
Multi-Zone On-Screen Display Yes
Versatile Speaker Configuration: Bi-Amp / Zone 2 / B-Speaker / Surround Back / Front Height / Front Width

Elite SC55 & 57
Zone 2 Sources: BD / TV/Sat / DVR / Video / Home Media Gallery / iPod USB / CD / Tuner / Adapter Port / Sirius
Zone 2 Component Video Out: Yes
Zone 3 Sources: BD / TV/Sat / DVR / Video / CD / Tuner / Adapter Port / iPod USB / Home Media Gallery / Sirius
Multi-Room and Source Output: 3 Zone AV
Multi-Zone On-Screen Display: Yes
Versatile Speaker Configuration: 7 Mode (Bi-Amp / Zone 2 / B-Speaker / Surround Back / Front Height / Front Width)

Yes you can use speaker B for Audio in a separate room.
You can have 5.1 in the Main Room and a Stereo Feed as Speaker B in another room or 7.2 in the main room when not using the B Speakers.
This is Speaker Setup "C" on page 12 in the OP Manual.

If you have the Elite VSX 53 you can have HDMI Video and Audio in two rooms.
I know that you can run the second HDMI Out of the E53 Into a second HDTV, and that second HDTV could be in any other room along with speaker B.
However, theoretically, you should be able to run the second HDMI Out from the VSX 53 to another receiver's HDMI Input in a second room for Full Video and 5.1 in both rooms with the same content.
This would not work with a Blu-Ray playing though because HDCP Prevents two monitors at the same time but all other content should be OK for simultaneous playback through both HDMI Out's at the same time from the E53.

Is there anyway to display the volume on my tv when turning up or down the VSX-52? I run all my components to my AVR and then output the AVR using hdmi out to my tv. TIA

With my configuration, a samsung led and vsx 52, the only way I have been able to get the volume to show up on my tv is to turn HDMI control On. In my opinion its not worth having HDMI control On because of all the other quirks that come with it. Perhaps HDMI control On behaves better with your setup.

Hope that helps
