The "OFFICIAL" Pioneer Elite VSX-52 / 53 Owner's Thread - Page 23

Question for u guys. I am picking up the VSX-52 tomorrow. I previously had the VSX-21TXH. When comparing some specs, everything is pretty much the same. Besides the 52 being 3D capable and the 21 not, Airplay and so on. I noticed on pioneer's website specs the 21 is 6lbs heavier (Better capacitors or better transformer?). Also says the 21 has HDMI 48 bit deep color and the 52 only has 36 bit deep color video processing? Is the 21 a better AVR?
Hi ConMan127,

When you initially setup the 53 was it unplugged?
There is a process that takes place after all connections are made and you plug the Pioneer back in, you will see the HDMI Indicator on the front panel flash as the Pio acquires it's mind if you will.

I made the mistake of connecting my HDMI's with my 53 plugged in and it just wasn't right, I unplugged my 53 and waited a few seconds and plugged it back in.
The HDMI Flashed before I turned it on.
I then turned it on and then the HDMI "Connected" Light would flash a few times and make connection quickly.
When you turn on the 53 does the blue HDMI Communication light on the front panel flash the entire time and then when it stoops flashing and stays on continuously,
then you have your connections and Audio and Video"
This is the visualness of the HDMI Handshake.

Just a thought,

Other than that yea, swap it out.

Good Luck,
Bud B

Hi Neo,

This is at Wikipedia...
Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
Look for the box on the Wiki page about 2/3rds down the page, with the below Info in it.
I believe that the 4096 x 2160P24 is due to 3D support in HDMI Version 1.4

Elite VSX 53:
HDMI Version 1.4: Maximum resolution over single link at 36-bit/px 1920×1200p75 / 4096×2160p24

Elite VSX 21:
HDMI Version 1.3b: Maximum resolution over single link at 48-bit/px 1920×1200p60 / 1920×1200p60

Thanks for the info. But 36 bit versus 48 bit. A higher bit resolution can display more shades of gray. With 30 bit color depth four times more gray can be represented. Eight times more gray, or even higher, can be represented by a 36 or 48 color bit depth. So i guess what i'm saying is the 21 can produce more color depth than the 52? Seems like the 52 went backwards in terms of it being a newer model. Right?

Anyone running this combo: Panasonic vt30 and pioneer elite vsx52? I just purchased the vsx52, upgraded from the vsx21txh and i feel like the picture was better on the 21txh. Anyone have any ideas on picture settings or input?

You shouldn't have any pic settings turned on from the receiver anyway, so turn video cal off with HD and Blu ray.

I turn off the video settings with the iControlAV2 app. With a plasma like the Panny VT30, put it in THX mode and calibrate those settings and leave it and the signal input unmolested by the receiver.
The only setting i changed was to put the AVR into the "plasma mode," but to my eyes it looks pixelated and too bright. I will mess around more with the setup tonite, as i have not thoroughly gone through all the settings. But so far my old pioneer vsx 21 had a better picture with no adjustments. And i was just using the standard THX mode on the VT30. That looked great. I'm hoping to get this figured out, or i will return the VSX52.

I don't know if I am in the right forum, but I am a proud owner of the Pioneer VSX-1326k (Canadian release Future Shop special) (purchased over the boxing week) it should be the equivalent to the VSX-53 Elite, minus the amber lighting and the fancy front chasie.

Anyways I recently completed a HTPC build, and am trying to bitstream my media to the Pioneer Receiver. So far I have been able to play most of my media but have hit a road block when it comes to TrueHD, it will not allow me to bitstream "trueHD" or "DTS-HD" I hope that I have all the drivers and current bios on my HTPC, can't really pinpoint the problem. Under Playback devices in Windows 7, it shows only Dolby Digital and DTS encoded formats supported. I am missing TrueHD and DTS-HD etc.

It plays Dolby Digital and and DTS-Audio with ezzz, no issues there. My setup is a 5.1 speaker range.

Is there a setting on my Receiver that needs to be adjusted to make things work properly, Some of my Blu-Ray Rips to MKV file format have "TrueHD" audio and I get the picture of the movie playback, but no Audio while using WMC.

To me it seems like there is an issue with the HTPC and the Receiver which is connected with an HDMI 1.4 cable. has to be a setting on the receiver I would think? since I just built the HTPC and got all the latest drivers etc. I really don't want to go re-install more drivers if they are not needed.

My Recent HTPC Build:
CPU: Intel i3-550 LGA 1156 Clarkdale
Motherboard: Zotac H55-ITX Wifi
Memory RAM: Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3
Hard Drive SSD: OCZ Vertex II 60GB
Hard Drive HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB Green (Media Drive)
Optical Drive: LG-CT21N-OEM
OS: Windows 7 Home (64bit)
Case: SilverStone Sugo-06 450W Power Supply

Home Theater Setup:
Display: Pioneer Kuro 5020FD
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1326k
Speakers: Bose Acoustimass Series 6
Blu-Ray Player: Sony BDP-S350
Cable Box: Rogers Explorer 8300 HD-PVR
Game Console: Playstation 3

^^^

it's not the avr, as there's no "setting" to make...

check in the htpc threads, and see if others have the same card as you... htpc's can be a bit of a bugger...

Dalaux-

I have a vsx-1121 (almost identical to the 52) and I kind of with that they had led lights on the back of the network port, like they do on PCs and other things. That being said, did you check the port on your switch/router to see if the LEDs were lit? Or maybe go in and see if the port is setup properly? I know you said the wiring looks good, but maybe its the router configuration.

I know its a basic suggestin but its a start... when I get a chance tomorrow I'll try unplugging my cable and see if I get the same message.

I have the VSX-50 (recently upgraded from the VSX-1015) and was curious about using the EQ.
Does anyone else make use of it? The sound seems a little tinny compared to the old Pioneer, and I'm wondering if part of that is due to the advanced capabilities of the new amp.

I was playing with the finger eq on the iPad app and it seemed to thicken the sound a bit, if that makes sense.

Yes, the app does make it better. Also in the app, turning on all of the options in the "Precision" effects makes both music and movies sound better in my VSX-52.

For music I use enhanced stereo with my 5.1 setup.

Hi Wozman,

Quote:
I am trying to bitstream my media to the Pioneer Receiver.

1) Exactly WHAT Media are you trying to get to the Pioneer?

2) What Software Program do you use for this Media?

3) After Contacting your MOBO manufacturer and turning on HD Audio:
a) How were you instructed to do this, BIOS?
b) Option to see HDMI Output?
With my HTPC when I right click on the Speaker icon in the task bar, I have an option of:
"Realtek HDMI Output" and under that it states: "ATI HDMI Audio-Ready"
It bothers me that you do not see an option for HD HDMI Audio Output!
Just "Digital Output"
4) When you are playing this "Media" do you see a 5.1 Incoming Signal in the Audio Signal box on the front of the Pioneer?
This is shown on page 9 of the OP Manual, item # 2 over the display at the top of the page and then # 2 below, "Program Format Indicators"
If you are seeing L-C-R SL/SR LFE then your pioneer IS getting the necessary Format Input and you need to re-check the Audio Settings in your HTPC.
If you DO NOT see L-C-R SL/SR LFE then there is a problem with the HTPC not putting out the Surround Format.

Both Scenario's are pointing to your HTPC and ALL of today's receiver's would display the same thing.
Either you can find the correct settings or need to make another call to your MOBO Manufacturer or check the Software that works with your MOBO and it's specific settings.

Good Luck,
Bud B

Unplug the receiver, unplug everything else, and start over double checking everything. Then test. Also, turn HDMI control to off.

Hi guys!

Unfortunately I just encountered the same problem that lion2k3 did on January 4th with my VSX-52. Everything was working fine for weeks, then a few days ago I turned it off, came back 1/2 hour later and when I turned it on, there was no output at all (audio or video). Inputs are Verizon FIOS HD DVR, XBOX 360 Slim, and iPhone. The unit is set up to output audio to high end speakers and video to a brand new Sharp Aquos 60" TV. The receiver responds to all inputs via the display, but nothing outputs to TV (not even the menu) or speakers. When I bypass the receiver with various components, they all work fine. Everything is hooked up via HDMI. Again, I made no changes whatsoever before things went haywire. I'm hoping I just bumped some mystical button on the remote, but I doubt it.

I'm relatively experienced with AV but totally stumped with this issue....

Any ideas???

Thanks for your help!

Steve

Hi Steve,
Not to be a Smart A-- but you do have the correct HDMI Input selected on your HDTV right..Sorry, I had to ask.

When you go to Setup, do you at least see the GUI on Screen?

When you go to the Video Parameters on your Pioneer is everything set as it was before, Display: LCD, Resolution, etc.. etc...?

You could try unplugging the Pioneer wait a few seconds and plug it back in, you should see the HDMI Signal Light Falsh and when it stops flashing try and turn it on.

What handshake power on Sequence do you use, try turning on your HDTV First and then the Pioneer and visa versa.

Do you see the Blue HDMI Signal indicator ON, on your Pioneer indicating that it at least see the HDMI Signal from whichever component you are using at the time.

LOL! No worries, Bud!

Correct HDMI input. I had actually isolated it as the only active TV input weeks ago (kids sometimes get hold of the remote....).

No GUI on TV, only menu showing on receiver display.

Everything exactly the same and untouched -connections, settings, etc.

Did the unplug, waited about 15 minutes, plugged back in, got the HDMI signal light flash, then turned it on but the issue persisted. Have done that about half a dozen times over the last several days.

I have tried every available sequence of power up to no avail (component, receiver, TV).

I am 99% sure that I have seen the HDMI signal light for each component when tested, but I'm still at work and will check when I get home tonight.

I swear, it's the craziest thing. I had not changed ANYTHING and had been using the entire setup for weeks with no issues whatsoever. Kids were watching cartoons, I turned everything off to put them to bed, came back and it was if I had unplugged all of the outputs. After hours and hours of trying to think through the issue, I finally just bypassed the receiver altogether.

The strangest thing is that audio and video are both affected. When I plug in my iPhone and play a song, the song shows playing on the receiver display but there is no sound whatsoever. I have ensured that the speaker and zone 2 settings had not been changed. I have tried speaker hookups in both A and B position. Speakers are my trusty Aerial Acoustics 7b's up front, and a host of in wall/ceiling all around and in other rooms. Again, it all worked well until it just stopped. The receiver even responds to the different input signals as it should (stereo, surround, etc.) on the receiver display, but again no output.

Are there some user-replaceable fuses that I don't know about?

Thanks again for your help!

Steve

I unplugged the receiver last night to change out my power conditioner, and upon starting it up, I got this problem.

Mine did the same thing Steve, let me know if you figure something out, I have yet to get it working again. Very frustrating..........

As it would happen, MCACC set my speakers to large. With the number of times I had to adjust those, you'd think I'd remember that. Sounding good now!

Hi Steve and edhawk1965,

I would be on the phone to Pioneer ASAP!
Even if you bought it on-line and your warranty is not through them, they do not ask for information about it's purchase.
If they do not have any ideas then I would swap them out.
If you bought them from a Brick & Morter Authorized facility like Best Buy etc.. I would have already boxed it up and taken it back.
If Pioneer says to return them I would start that process.

The last thing that I would try is a complete Reset back to Factory Specs.

Good Luck Guys!

Thanks, Bud!

Sounds like the proper course of action. I will definitely try the Reset first, but don't have my hopes up. Got mine at Best Buy so I'll push them first so I don't have to box it up and mail it....

I will post my results.

Hi Bud,

I mean if BB won't do the exchange (may be outside of return period), I'll have to take it up directly with Pioneer under their warranty terms....

I just put on a the new pirates on BR with 7.1 master hd the receiver says master HD and all the speakers are lit up on the receiver but I am not hearing any sound from the two added tea surround they tested fine through MCACC but now nothing. I am going to continue to trouble shoot the manual while typing this thanks for any and all help
post #688 of 1358
my vsx53 does the same thing. Works fine one evening, next day, no video, no monitor video, no audio. Usually if I power it down, unplug every cable, let it sit for four or so hours it comes back. I have Pioneer twice and they tell me to take it to a support center.
Ok I figured it out after reading a few lines in the manual I realized that I had the A & B speakers on once I turned the B off it was all fine but I love this thread it has really gave me the information I needed to properly operate my E52
