Making the "Bacon Race" Theater - Page 22

Second coat of paint is done on the Light Tray and Columns.

The oppo player showed up yesterday! Once the projector part is done I'm going to have to take the obligatory stack of electronics boxes picture!

Went and looked at more carpet yesterday. I think I will make a decision on that as soon as today, if not then by Monday. I think a dark gray color is the way I am going to go. I've checked a few examples and it goes well with the column color and will offset the black as well.

Gearing up for the big weekend. I've been plagued with migraines my whole life and both yesterday and today they have been going strong. I'm going to have to take some injections if this keeps up over the weekend. The plan for Saturday/Sunday is to finish.... well, to FINISH! Other than the carpet (Which means no chairs yet) We are hoping to get all of our panels made and mounted by the end of Sunday! (Cross your fingers people!)

A couple of people have asked me about why I never posted photos of my original theater.... well at the time, I wasn't really a user here and had no idea what I was doing. But it was a quick budget job. So I have some old photos I found, and they are a little blurry, but here is a few pics of my old theater I made with my roomate's help back in 2007

There is no extra level. It's only one level with steps. The riser is sort of shaped like a U. It goes from wall to wall on the sides, with steps on the front edge, and then back down behind the rear seats.

See? Not only are my photos blurry, they present an optical illusion!

So behind the rear row of seats, the floor is the same height as the floor in front of the riser. There are steps on each side of the front of the riser, half height, to step down to the front of the room. The Riser extended back to the rear wall, except behind the seats. So you step down towards the door from each side behind the rear seats. All 4 steps go all of the way to the wall, so thats why the baseboard follows them down.

Yeah, it's a little bit of a goofy design. In fact at one time I was considering making a wall even behind the seats to block any direct light from the doors being open, but I thought it would make my surround sound setup wonky so I didn't. It is also a really wide room. It was like 19' x 21.5'. So there was a lot of extra space on the sides. I could have made it narrower, but the space on the side of the room would have still been unusable, unless I made it some odd hallway. It would have been a great building space to do a "room in a room". In fact, I would have LOVED to use that same space for my current theater... but I didn't, so there. Now that I've done all of my research and have done it again, I would have never made any of the same decisions I did. Still, in all fairness, the soundproofing was excellent. It cancelled out almost all of the noise, and I really didn't know what I was doing. But it needed some work in the wall treatments for sure. I still do own the house, and am renting it out (hopefully until I pay off the mortgage!!!) so who knows, maybe I'll get a chance to re-do it someday.

Round 1... FIGHT!

After staying up until almost 2am finishing all of the trim painting last night, this is what I ended up with!

So here was the first panel we created today. If you would like to see how we do the fabric process, here it is.

Step one. Align one the fabric up on one corner of the panel and staple.



Then pull the far corner (lengthwise) tight, but make sure the seam is even along the frame so that the fibers aren't wonky, and staple!



Line up the center of that side with the edge of the fabric to make sure it is straight and throw a staple there to hold it in place.



Then you can just quickly staple that entire side along the edge.

Then on the opposite side (lengthwise) pull the fabric tight across the face of the panel in the center, and put a few staples in to hold the fabric tight.



Although there aren't more photos of the rest. Starting at the middle next to the staples you just made, pull small sections tight across the face, while at the same time slightly pulling it away from the staples you made, to make it tight in both directions. Do this in sections of 6-8" or so, and run a line of 5-6 staples. Then continue doing this toward the corner until you reach it.

Once you reach the corner, go back to the center and work the other direction.

Once both sides (lengthwise) are stapled, go to the top, wrap the fabric around the top edge, and staple a few times in the center.

Then go the opposite side (the bottom) and pull the fabric tight across the face, and put another three staples in the bottom center. Now work from the center staples on both the top and the bottom towards the corners like your did the sides. Make sure that you don't staple too close to the corner itself, as you will need to fold over and staple the remaining fabric like wrapping paper corners.

Cut off the excess fabric (from the staples) and you have a completed panel!

Now the 3 red center panels are installed. Outsides first and then the middle.

Now we add another piece of 2" red trim below the red panels.



Now we add the first of two black panels below the red trim.

Followed by the baseboard

Then move on a couple of hours and a few more wall sections start to fill in...
