The screen is an AT (Acoustically Transparent) screen from SMX Cinema Solutions. (Their Cineweave HD material). The whole purpose of this material is for sound to pass through without problems.

You went with the SMX pre-built screen frame too? If so, why instead of building your own?

Yes I did. BIG discussed building my own frame and just buying the material. It would save me some cash, and we could buy the SeymourAV material direct at a cheap price. But in the end the screen didn't cost that much, and Ruben gave us a good deal, so we went with SMX. I'm sort of happy we did anyway since my inspiration for this theater was from his design.

So right now I have all of my debit card, credit card, checks, and paypal statements in front of me. I'm categorizing all of my costs, what I purchased, where I got it from, and hyperlinks to the items if applicable. Hopefully I will post all of it sometime today. What this won't show is a breakdown of exactly what I purchased at places like Lowes and Home Depot, since each receipt is cumulative, and I'm not going to itemize those costs. But for things I purchased online, I will definitely do that for you.

I'm with you Logan - I think I'm going to avoid this also.

Hold your breath.

Grand Total: 36,425.28

And that includes the things you don't see in the pictures yet (Projector, Chairs, Carpet, Screen)

Cost Breakdown:

Keep in mind that some of these things are slightly rounded (Like the projector and my polish labor costs) since I either have not paid for them yet, or their work was on a per-week basis and they were doing work outside of the movie room in addition to the work on the room itself. So I could be off by about $1,000 total in this whole thing.

Actually, the wife paid for the General Contract labor (Not BIGmouthinDC) and the Sony Projector, plus she makes more money than I do, but I don't think she has seen the grand total, nor does she want to.

Yeah the Labor, Projector, Chairs alone are half the cost. That's why I wanted to provide a cost breakdown. So people knew where the money goes. The materials aren't that expensive, and if you did it completely on your own, BUILDING a theater isn't that bad. It's once you start filling it with things that it gets pricy!

Plus I was fortunate to already have a good 7.2 speaker system, the Sunfire Amp to power it, a 18TB HTPC I had built a couple of years ago, and things like rack shelving from my previous theaters, the harmony remotes, a previous integra pre-amp that I sold to help pay for a new one, etc. So didn't have to buy them this time around.
Looks pretty good. Thanks for the cost summary. It's hard getting into a project with a realistic idea of cost.

I assume there is some equipment that you already own that is not on the list?

edit: to slow. answered above!

I should also note that all of my initial materials estimates (Like GOM) were very good. We used the entire roll of black gom (30 yards), every piece of drywall, all of the insulation, etc.

Where the estimates were a little high were on the soundproofing end. I have an extra 5 piece of OC703 leftover, about 1 2/3 boxes of 1" cotton left over, 1/2 box of 2" cotton left over, about 40 DC-04 clips left over. I had about 50 whisper clips left over but I was able to return them. I probably have 5-8 yards of Red Gom left over (purchased 20) - All of the above are available to be purchased from me at a discount btw. Inquire with a PM if interested.

Given the fact that you finished in under 4 months, the labor costs were well spent. Your room kills a lot of the $100k theaters that you see posted here (CEPro) that were done by installers.

Sounds like a very intelligent woman. On some topics, ignorance is bliss.

Thanks for posting the detailed cost breakdown. I don't remember seeing many folks do this and it's very illuminating.

The room is just gorgeous -- you guys did beautiful work. I can't wait to see photos with the carpet and chairs in place!

Thank you for the complement!

Well I have to credit BIG for a lot of that great work, and SMX/Sandman/Ruben for having a lot of the great design ideas. Considering we mostly worked on weekends, and it took just over 3 months... I am very happy with the outcome.
Nice recordkeeping and full disclosure! I have all my receipts saved up too, but I'm not sure if I ever want to actually add them up, given the fact that the stack of receipts from trips to Lowes and Home Depot alone is about an inch thick.

I keep telling my wife we're on track on the budget when she asks - trouble is I have no idea what the budget is.

Yeah I know that a lot of people are curious about how many labor hours I used, and how much a theater costs, so it's very useful information. Just like the ability to provide good detailed photos and exact measurements used. I know I read Ruben's thread over and over again to get good estimates of how the sizes of things in his room were compared to other things (Soffit, Columns, Panels, etc).. so because I know what I was curious about when reading other threads, I wanted to provide as much as I could during the build. I wish I took more "How-To" Photos for all of you, but a lot of the times BIG and I would be doing something and there were no free hands to take pictures with.

As far as the final photos... I am dying to take them! It's hard to feel like I'm done and have the room -NOT- done. Until the carpet shows up and the projector/screen are mounted, I'm not going to have that feeling of satisfaction. Plus it is hard to just have to wait for these things to show up and not be able to do anything about it. At least Mark says my Sony will arrive and ship next week! Carpet one week after that!

I stayed inside of what I was hoping for as far as "Construction Budget". Then the wife and I just decided that we should put optimal seating and projector too which just pushed the costs over the $30k threshold I was gunning for. Probably would have still been about $3-4k over my estimated budget if we skimped, but why should we on a project like this?

Yeah I collected and kept all of the receipts. So I could actually take all of those "Materials / Assorted / Home Depot" entries in the above breakdown and actually say things like "Screws, 2x4s, Wire, etc) but I'm not going to do that.
Wow that is some total. Like Brad I am afraid to actually add up all my receipts. I have a shoe box FULL of receipts so I can only assume the total cost would be difficult to stomach.

D,

Can I ask a question re: ur screen choice. What made u finally decide on 2:35 vs 2:37 or another. I was just wondering. I don't have opinion. Just a question.

Thanks, jim

I really didn't think about it much to be honest. 2:35 is sort of the standard that the websites list, so I just asked for it. A lot of people seem to go 2:37 so they have a nice halfway point between 2:35 and 2:40 material, but I just didn't bother with it.

That sounds about right for the quality of construction that you did. That's quite the fee for expert advice, but then I never anticipated that Jeff was cheap!

That said, 105 days is sure one of the quickest that I've seen!

Very well said! When I was getting cheap, Cathan would remind me that a few extra dollars over the total cost of the project was worth it in the end. Sometimes I thought he was setting up a co-dependent relationship with me ('cause he wanted to believe the same thing and wanted me to convince him too). In the end, he was 100% right. What's $3-4k over a $30-40k project? (and yes, I do realize this is a huge sum for some folks, and that I'm blessed to be able to even make this decision in the first place).

Not just advice, in fact mostly work. BIG is an excellent resource. You can tell directly by the photos plus the number of days it took how much of an asset he was.

No kidding... even looking at that total makes me shed a tear or two. That's a big sum for anyone. (Bill Gates aside) To even think about putting that much money into just one room does make you count your blessings.

This is true, but i was talking about and showing your room to my wife. We look at it this way:

every room needs carpet, trim, dry wall and lights and furniture ect. It could be argued that a "regular" living room could have more furniture in it costing far more then what you budgeted. If you take some of those costs that would have been spent regardless, it makes it even more attractive.

People spend on different things. My neighbor has a $65000 boat that he can't afford, makes payments on, and used twice this summer. A vacation for a family of 4 can cost upwards of 10 grand... It's all about perspective.

Thanks again for posting up your $$$ list. You are going to have a fantastic space to show for it.
