I bet someone HAS or WILL. Wavy red and white to look like bacon? With posters of bacon? An animated frying bacon screensaver... endless possibilities!

What a day, I broke the rear window in my pickup and Damelon broke his camera, Somehow in the middle we made some progress.

First we had some plans.

Riser



Stage



So we hopped into my 20 year old pickup (80K miles) and went to Lowe's

There on aisle 17 we picked up a stage and riser.

If filled 3 carts, Damelon up in front I'm pushing from the back. At this point I was thinking "Some Assembly may be required". If you look closely you will notice we were able to buy 3/8 inch pre-curved plywood stage fronts, this saves a lot of time trying to curve then yourself.



It fits!


I need to document that our trip to Lowe's took 3 hours, I think we were having wood cut for 2 of the 3 hours. Then there was the KFC drive thru window where we picked up some sandwiches.

We got a good portion of the riser cut and assembled



We got the stage framed









During the cleanup of the room at the end of the day I decided to finally try one of the tricks of pulling cable in a conduit



Tied a 7-11 bag on some nylon cord, one of the helpers held the vacuum hose to the projector conduit and I positioned the bag at the other end and before I could say "here it comes", the vacuum ate the bag and string.



Tomorrow we hope to get the decking on. That all depends on how fast Damelon can haul sand.

Here were my GF's ideas on the matter yesterday.
-She suggested a pig/bacon theme
-Name: "Masterporcine Theater" (I deemed it a good working title)
-Play the six degrees of (not kevin) bacon where we connect actors having eaten bacon together in movies
-Serve bacon popcorn and maple bacon caramel corn and redhead bacon peanuts
-Bacon washed bourbon and vodka cocktails

If it was done well, I suspect that Anthony Bourdain might come visit such a thing.

Poor Peter, ended up with his picture on the internet tangled in string and hoses.

I ran the "idea" of a bacon themed room to by my wife. She didn't even laugh, just said.. Yeeeaaah, No. I will go the normal design route and just eat some bacon in it instead.

And as to me hauling sand. BIG likes to think of it as a Rite of passage. Why is it the one day where my helpers aren't there happens to be the same day where there is 4,000 lbs of sand to haul. WHY, I say! I'm still tired.

A little bit of pictures from Sunday

First we finished framing in the steps for the riser, adding the electrical boxes, and pulling in the wiring.

First the left. We used adjustable depth boxes because they mount easily to the front of the 2x12s and they can be adjusted for the final depth of the carpet. Did run short of lumber and had to improvise with some spacers.



One on the right



Then put an outlet on the front of the riser for either powered seats or electronic gear. We also ran a 1 1/2 inch conduit from the front of the riser to the equipment room. Damelon expects to use His Laptop and other gear on the sofa and wants a hard wired connection to his network. Notice we didn't center it up but rather put to one side where it will be easier to reach behind the seating and plug something in.



Then while Damelon was hauling the good stuff, I was stuffing the riser with fiberglass. As my Mom used to say, as snug as a bug in a rug.



We also got the two layers of 3/4 inch plywood sheathing on top, first layer 100% screwed down, second is in progress, pictures of that will come later when I cut the lip. We did put some 30 lb roofing felt between layers.

We also filled the first bay of the stage with sand as a visual aid to show his helpers who will be working in the basement this week what it would look like if they have time to do the rest.

As for all the complaing about sand I don't see the problem, it worked just fine for me.

I'm going to wait until the riser is 100% finished before I tell everyone to shorten it by half of a foot. Muahaha

It is gray PVC electrical conduit for the HDMI and other signal cables. It will get covered with a gang cable cover plate.

Whatever we end up using to mount the projector will be attached to the drywall and plywood on the ceiling.

I always thought the point of the pvc and conduit was to allow for future expansion and upgrades. What is the benefit to using it right now rather than just running the HDMI and other cables right through the joists and stapling them like you would romex? Does it provide some protection from signal interference?

That is one school of thought. We used BA 2 inch conduit and there is no reason to leave it wide open for future upgrades. The initial set-up HDMI cables are right where they should be during construction, sealed in their plastic bags sitting outside the construction zone.

If you run that puny 1 inch conduit to speaker locations there is some logic to running your lines outside the conduit and keeping the conduit for the future.

I'm slow but I think I get what you are saying now. You have the conduit in place now, but you are holding off on running the HDMI through it until after the room is completed, that way you don't get dust and stuff in the connectors and ruin the cable?

Ok here are some of my soundproofing costs. Keep in mind, things like the clips were based off of my Ceiling Joist widths (Which I believe were like 19.5") and things like glue, etc. based off of my wall sqft. (See initial post for dimensions) AND dont forget my equipment room (7'6" x 7'1") is also decoupled so also was clipped & Glued.


From SoundproofingCompany.com
Green Glue (5 Gallon Pails) x 4 @ $198 each = $792. (This was right on the money for what we needed)
Acoustical Caulk (16 Tubes) = $100 (I only used 8 or 9)
Whisper-Clips x 140 @ $3.98 ea = $557.20 (I had 49 left over.... but we did order extra just in case because they would take any returns @ no restock fee)

From Capitol Building Supply in Manassas, VA
Drywall 4' x 9' @ 5/8" thick - 74 sheets = $666 (I think we were 1 sheet short) So great estimate there
R13 Insulation (All walls) (6 Bags) - $287.11
R19 Insulation (Ceiling) (2 Bags) - $168 (I was short 1 Bag)

From Bryan Pape
DC04 Clips @ $4.79 ea x 81 = $387.99 (I had 24 extra)

So clips and caulk were all over-estimated, but for both clips that varied based on where my joists were and how we spaced them while still following load specs for the mass required.

By the way my latest run to Lowes for all materials required for the Stage and Riser (Plywood, Lumber, Insulation, Gang Boxes, Sand, Plastic AND delivery) was about $1,068.58. I had to also get an additional bag of R38 for the riser (I had purchased 2 @ 16ft wide) and they were too short so that was an additional $45.97. The conduit cost Jeff $1.52 since they scanned it as a bottle of water.

By the way here is my latest terrible hand-drawn sketch of the movie room, complete with most dimensions. Feel free to make a much prettier one for me someone.

Things are NOT drawn to scale. For instance my columns are 10" deep, which is the same width as the square front sections as the stage, but I drew them half of the size as you can see. Soffit is 16" wide, 12" tall on sides and back. It will also run width-wise across the top of the screen wall and all the way to the front wall of the theater (2' 4" deep) but the light box will be mounted on the front side of the soffit above the screen wall.

Stage we used 2x10s for the main bones and it will be covered with 2 x 3/4" plywood.
Riser we used 2x12s. Same plywood. We are only putting 1 3/4" ply piece on the riser steps. All rear speaker columns will rest on the riser.

Door opening is 34" wide for a 32" door.

Walls will all be fabric. They will either ALL use 2" treatments, or the back will use 2" treatments and the sides 1". Waiting for Bryan Pape to validate that.

Thanks for the information. This is a very detailed build thread and I'm sure multiple people will really appreciate all the hard work being put into the build and thread itself. The information and pictures help us first timers/wanna builders out a lot.

What is your take on the green treated lumber for the stage and riser? It doesn't look like you are using it. I don't know the cost difference between green and non green, is it significant?
