I will be getting this t.v in January hoping the price will drop after christmas, I have a question about the usb ports on this tv. Right now I just put a movie I want to view on a USB flash drive and stick it into my samsung plasma, does this the 735 model handle MKV files or is that an unsupported file format?

Hello everyone,

My current TV, up until last week, had been the 65" Mitsubishi High Definition Rear Projection TV, model # WS-65813 Diamond Series. It was Mitsubishi's top of the line TV at the time and arguably one of the best performing HDTV's in 2004, (when I purchased it new), and it is still working like new today. I'm one of those people who didn't need a new TV, but wanted a new, slim TV so I spent the past few months researching which one to buy. After spending countless hours on forums and reading endless reviews on different models and after viewing many of the contenders in person, I chose the Sharp Aquos LC-70LE735U and am so glad that I did.

Once I decided on which TV to buy the next decision was where to buy it from. Both Amazon & my local Best Buy Store were selling it for about the same price, which was more than I wanted to pay for it. Online searching located several other options for purchasing wherein I could save as much as $600.00 or more over Amazon & Best Buy's prices. However this savings comes with a trade off. At Amazon & Best Buy you can return the TV if you don't like it or there is a problem with it, but with the online stores you are stuck with it and your only options is having Sharp come out to fix any problem or replace the set if it is unfixable. There were no return options with the discounted online stores that I located.

After careful consideration I decided on an online store which was in the state next to mine. I knew that I was taking a chance, but asked myself that famous Clint Eastwood question from Dirty Harry...."Do you feel lucky!". I did so I took the chance and placed the order. I am happy to report that my TV arrived in perfect condition five days ago without so much as a mark on the box it came in. I don't know if it is because I am getting older or not, but I must say the TV felt heavier than the 99 pounds it is listed at.

Anyway, on the same day that I ordered the TV I had measured the height from the floor in my living room to where my face is located while sitting on the couch. I then used that measurement to calculate how high of a stand I would need so that my face would be perfectly centered in the screen of this TV during normal viewing. Based on those measurements I purchased a cabinet that stood exactly 17" high. When I put the TV on top it, using the stand that came with the TV, it lined up perfectly for my seated viewing position on the couch, with my eyes being dead center to the height of the screen. From the TV screen to my face is 10 feet and for me it seems like a perfect distance for both regular & 3D viewing of a TV of this size.

Moving on to the calibration of this new TV. During my research I also checked into all of the available calibration DVD's that were available for self calibration of a TV. I am aware that this is not as good as paying professional to do it, but for my purpose, it will suffice since my viweing preferences may not exactly match that of a hired calibrator. I decided to go with the new Disney WOW Calibration Disc in Blu-Ray. It is in stock & very reasonably priced at Amazon.com. Anyway I spent several hours with this disc and am so glad that I bought it. I can't say enough good things about it. It was easy to use and had a lot of powerful tools on it to assist in making your TV the best that it can be when doing the calibration yourself.

After I was all finished with the calibration I sat back & viewed the fruits of my labor while watching the "Experience" part of the Disney WOW Calibration Disc. For those of you who don't know, the Experience" part of the disc is a series of clips from different Disney movies that will really show off the picture details & colors of your new set. All I can say of OMG....I couldn't believe how fantastic this TV looked! I am so glad that I bought it over the other TV brands available. I have posted some still shots that I took of a few of the clips off the TV. As nice as the photos are, they do not do justice to how nice they look on the TV in person.

The next thing I tried out was the 3D capabilities. The TV did not come with any glasses so I bought 4 of them, (Sharp AN-3DG20-B), brand new, from a dealer on eBay for $86.00 each with free shipping. They arrived in perfect condition. They are lightweight and fit well over my prescription glasses. Since I don't own any 3D movies I used the On Demand feature of my Comcast Service and watched some of their free 3D content. All I can say again is OMG. The 3D is outstanding! I was blown away and so were a few friends who came over to check out the new TV.

Is this TV perfect....no. If you look for faults you will eventually find some minor ones on certain content, but this is true of all TV's. In my humble opinion is about as close to perfect as you can get with today's technology at this price point.

Maybe I'm just lucky & got an exceptionally good set I don't know. What I can say is that on the packaging that came with my TV, directly under the serial number there is this letter, printed exactly like this: -B-
I'm not sure it that means anything or not, but I can tell you that this TV came with the latest firmware already installed. When I tried to update it, I was told that there were no new updates available.

I am one VERY HAPPY 735 owner !

Regards,
Tom

PS: Just before posting this review, I just finished watching the X-Factor on Comcast Cable and was just blown away by the sharpness, color depth, details & black levels displayed by this TV. It was in a word....AWESOME !

Tom, great review - thanks for sharing

Also, points for BB. They said if Sharp doesn't want to do anything, they will let me return it, after 90 days! They rock. Only catch is they want me to buy a two year warranty, and after this, fine by me. Also, they said they can let me buy an Elite. I saw it again today. Guys it is AMAZING. I put in WOW and I almost had a heart attack. I may have to get it. My wife is going to kill me.

What is the mll for this set? I have seen two reports, one said 0.008 the other was around 0.015.

What are the thoughts on buying it online and having it "dropped" right at your front door versus dealing with a local retailer's home delivery with setup costs or even picking it up yourself locally?

Also what are the suggestions on a wall mount like a:
Digicom #PMA-774BK

Thanks in advance for your input.

BUZZ

I bought mine, 2 months ago, local at BrandsMart in Sunrise, FL. Less than $3K w/ 2 glasses, $40 inside delivery + $100 for a Panny DMP-BDT210 bluray player. I was there the other day and noticed price had crept up $200 and no glasses included anymore. However, its brandsmart so you can negotiate the price about $100-$200.

I tried these settings of T3b_Vat and they didn't work for me on my set. Too washed out, colorless and not as accurate as the ones you posted. I made another slight tweak last night to the ones you posted - color now 6 and backlight 6 and brightness -4. Thanks again for posting those and good luck on your replacement set.

Thanks for the reply. I was there and noted their price and no 3D glasses included. Next thing will be cars sold without tires! Avail in our Parts Dept go see Jack. Also noted the price on Amazon just jumped by $400 yesterday and it now comes from a new source / retailer! So far not avail at Costco, BB was high, CompUSA does not have any Sharps at, HHgregg same as BB.

Keep the possible sources coming. May need to wait until after Jan 1.

Thanks for the great review Tom. I feel exactly the same way on my purchase of the 70735. I've been enjoying it for over a month now and I'm still awed by the pq of this set. Like you, I adjusted the set on my own and I'm pleased at the results.

That is great to hear Paul and I'm happy for you.

I've always been a stickler for picture quality and I have to say that the more I watch my TV the more I love it !

My girlfriend thinks that I am nuts since each night that we watch TV together I keep saying WOW to myself every few minutes as one great scene changes into another.

I just ordered the Avatar 3D Blue-Ray and can't wait to see it on this baby!

I just got an e-mail today with BF deals from buy . com. I don't know if their price is in the same ballpark as the other places but it's sub 3k. Free shipping too. It's not from them but through them though, don't know if that hurts the deal at all. I'm sure you'd still have buy . com to back you if something were to go wrong. I also think they have a return policy but I haven't bought from them in a while. When I did though I never had any problems with them.

Does the tv stand come assembled/attached? Or does it all need to be put together?
It needs to be assembled ... but it's not difficult.
Thanks. I'm guessing it wouldn't be possible for one person to assemble?

No. My wife had to hold while I put the stand on. It's a little less then 100 lbs.

I am selling my 735U because I just picked up an Epson Home Cinema 3010 with 100" grey screen.

Selling it with 4 pairs of Sharp glasses, PM me for details. I am in Atlanta and will consider shipping.

If i may ask, from strictly a picture quality standpoint how does the 3010 pj compare to the sharp? Thanks for any reply.

I was going to go with the 735, until I considered the projector option as well. I think I am pulling the trigger on a Panny PT-AE7000 and 106" screen.

FINALLY - I made it to Best Buy today to look at these bad boys in person. I have to say - MUCH better than I had anticipated. The Sharps were all pretty close to each other - 70735, 80632 and 70 inch Elite. Elite looked better, but I was impressed the most by 80632 - all 70 inchers looked pretty small next to it. The funniest thing was - I was talking to some guy about how awesome 80632 looked, while his girlfriend was trying to pull him away saying "Are you crazy, are you crazy?" Haha, I thought it was hilarious.

Not impressed at all by the Elite - the picture looked good, but nothing special, and since my living room is never dark at all - I would actually be happier with 80632 than with 70 inch Elite, in all honesty.

Also, Sonys looked the best to me as far as PQ, but the largest size they had was 55 inch, while Sharp, Panasonic and Samsung all had 65 and larger panels on display.

Anyway, so this is it for me - 70735, although I still wish 80632 had 3D. Also, I answered my own question - 10 feet away is not too close to 70735. It's not too close to 80632 either - I kind of feel bad now that I'm home and have to watch my tiny little 55HX929, lol
Best Buy includes 2 glasses and 3 years 0% financing - tempting!

vladi123456,
I know how you feel. I was at first looking into the 60" Elite but have since ruled it out due to cost/size ratio. Now I'm torn between a 64PND8000 or the 70LE735. I wish there was somewhere to do a good comparison with quality HD feed, normal to dim lighting, and a properly set up picture. Unfortunately the best way is to buy both, compare at home, and return the "loser". Not exactly practical.

Go for the bigger one! After watching the 70735 for a few minutes I went to look at Panasonic 65 inch TV - don't know which model it was, but it looked super small after viewing the bigger Sharps!
I saw the 735 and the 80" side by side, and while the 80" had a good picture, the one I saw had really bad uneven lighting. Unfortunately as that was the only one I had seen, I couldn't justify the price because it was very noticeable.

I am very happy with the 735 after having it for a little over a week.
I'm wondering if anyone in this thread has had any issues with their 735? Specifically dead pixels? Let me tell you my crazy story!

I researched the crap out of all the choices available like i'm sure many in here have done. I eventually went with the 735. This was a couple of weeks ago. I went to a local retailer to purchase it and they had a sale going on. I beat 'em down a little and got one hell of a price on this tv (just under $2900.) I also got 2 pairs of the nice rechargeable 3D glasses that have the 2D switch on them. This was on a Saturday when i bought it. I had to schedule it for the following Friday because i had yet to decide on a new stand since i was mounting this one to the wall. My previous tv was a 52in Samsung that i had mounted on a stand so i had to get rid of that one.

Friday rolls around and the tv is delivered. By then i had my new stand and everything was ready to go. I had to wait until Saturday for my brother in law to come over and help me mount it. I got everything hooked up and we started checking it out. Man, we were blown away at the picture quality! We checked out movies and gaming and it was all incredible. Hands down the best picture i've ever seen from a tv. When the screen went all black it was like it was turned off it was so black. And that was the picture straight out of the box. I was completely happy and couldn't wait to start tweaking it!

It wasn't until about a week later that i tried a 3D movie since i didn't have any at the time. It was Toy Story 3 and I was blown away yet again. I had already seen the movie before but watching it in 3D was just amazing and it made it look so much better than watching it in 2D. I wasn't much on 3D and was skeptical about it but now i'm a fan and hope it really takes off!

My source for everything is my HTPC i built. When i was done watching the movie i switched inputs on my tv to watch just regular tv and by doing that it goes black for a couple of seconds while switching. Well, i noticed something on the screen when it switched. Yep, it was a dead pixel. I know it wasn't there when i first got it so it must have went out that night. I was disappointed but only because i know the hassle that would be involved in getting it exchanged. It was late so i had to wait until the next day to call the store. When i did call they took care of it and scheduled a replacement to be delivered the next day which was Sunday.

Sunday comes and i never hear from the delivery people. So i call and find out there was a "processing error" for the replacement. They took care of that but i had to wait until Monday for the delivery now. So come Monday i wait around all morning and the guys finally show up. They took one look at the defective tv still hanging on my wall and refused to take it because it was still mounted. Mind you all they had to do was lift it up and off the mount. I had already disengaged the latch to make it easy for them but they have some BS policy that if it's mounted they can't touch it. I was furious at this point. I told them to hold on while i call the store. The store couldn't do anything for me. They told me i had to get it off the wall. I had to wait until the next night for my brother to help me get it off the wall and schedule the replacement to come Wednesday night.

So the guys show up Wednesday night to swap out the tv and i got my brother in law to come back over to help me hang the new one. We get everything hooked up, turned the tv on and guess what i saw again....a dead pixel! That's two of these in a row with a dead pixel now. I nearly put my fist through the wall i was so angry. Unfortunately it was just after the store had closed and the next day was Thanksgiving so i was screwed.

They opened up on midnight on Thanksgiving night so went to the store and spoke to the manager again. He couldn't believe it either that i had another one with a dead pixel. I told him i like this tv and want it to work out but i don't have confidence in it's reliability so he offered me a free 3 year warranty. It was a madhouse of course so he told me to call him about 4pm that day which was fine by me because i was tired anyway. So 4pm rolls around and instead of calling i pay him a visit. I asked him if there was anything he can do on a 5 year warranty because that's what i really wanted. He said it was $100 more and that is what he could charge me for it if i wanted to do that. I agreed to it since i had made up my mind if that's what it would cost i would just do it for the extra 2 years. He was having computer problems but he got the invoice done and my replacement was scheduled for Saturday.

Saturday morning comes and i hadn't received the call for when they would be out to deliver the new tv. I knew exactly what that meant. I called them and they had no record of my invoice and told me to call the store. I called my old buddy up at the store again and he was in disbelief. After all i've already been through their system didn't capture the new invoice so it's like it never happened and therefore no new tv would be delivered. I was refunded the original delivery fee of $70 which i had beaten them down to about $40 anyway. So i gained another $30 back. I figured another month of this and the damn thing will be free right? Anyway, i have it scheduled for next Saturday and hope it works. This time i'm plugging it in before i sign off on the delivery! If something ends up being wrong with the next one i think my head is going to explode!

Anyway, i was just curious if anyone else has had any defects? I loved this tv for the week i had it working and can't wait till i get one that actually works. The size and picture quality are unmatched imo.

Edit: Had my 2nd replacement delivered on Nov. 29th and so far all seems to be good. But i do find myself being paranoid whenever i have a black screen that i might see a dead pixel. lol Avatar in 3D is simply amazing on this tv!
Could you see the dead pixel from your viewing distance? I know people want perfection from their new tv but IMHO, a dead pixel is only a problem if you can see it from where you watch it.
I'd say you were extremely lucky to get a replacement, twice no less, for one dead pixel. Like others have said, I haven't noticed any dead pixels and don't intend to look for them. I'm already attempting (mostly successfully) to ignore the clouding in the left upper corner and that's enough.

Only on a black screen. But a dead pixel is a defect and i shouldn't have a defect on a brand new tv. My 2nd replacement is coming Tuesday so we'll see how it goes. I'm crossing my fingers on this one. I just want to be able to enjoy my 70 inch tv. I can overlook the effects of an LED tv but i won't stand for a defect.

Once many people see a dead pixel they tend to see it during normal viewing. The eye is just drawn to the defect, ruining the viewing experience.

Secondly, a defective pixel on a new set may be an indication of an issue with the panel, leading to additional defects down the road - after the warranty expires. Kind of like a bad spot of paint on a new car being a hint of a bad overall paint job.

Sharp is having dead pixel issues on their Elite sets, which are supposed to have the best of the large quatron panels. If the best have them, the rest are more likely to have one, or more.

If I had one and could get an exchange, I surely would exchange sets until I had a panel where all the pixels and sub pixels worked as they should.

Tom, care to share your calibration settings? I've got my close, but still needs a bit more brightening and I could use some guidance.
